Beowulf Thread: Retiring from Retirement

I don't get it, Mike said the Riker skin would make sense with something he'll show later, but Beo already does the Riker 'sit' during his timeout. Maybe he meant later in the video, but he didn't comment on it when he got there.

Also since Beo's got the gut punch, suspenders and can potentially have a moustache he needs a Haggar palette.

Still so many questions, what's the disadvantage of not having the chair? What will he use the crowds hype for?
Beowulf is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma...

The most obvious disadvantage of not having the chair would be having no access to a special that uses the chair, but that would be too easy and too simple. That's not Lab Zero's style.

I find it kind of irritating when people underestimate LabZero.
Well, as far as me, I thought all the DLC characters were going to be pretty boring. None of them seemed interesting to me. But when I started seeing them in motion, they look more and more interesting. After thinking about it, I think it's because seeing, for example, this:
SG_squigly_portrait.jpg
conveys none of the expression, personality, or charm of her in motion, as seen in their animations. She looks boring, plain, with no personality and nothing interesting outside of her clothes, skin color, and snake in her head. But then you look at her animations, like those here:
tumblr_n0si4syyhG1sffbi8o3_250.gif

tumblr_n0si4syyhG1sffbi8o4_250.gif

tumblr_n0si4syyhG1sffbi8o5_250.gif

tumblr_n5n43iev321r53v56o2_500.gif

So, as far as it comes with me at least, it's never that I doubt Lab0, it's that I can't envision a character being interesting by looking at the shot of them just standing before seeing them in motion. The more animation I see of a particular character, the more I learn to love that character. Even the first pictures I ever saw of Skullgirls, the one that made me want to check what it was all about, was this:
Happy_Halloween_by_oh8.jpg
Edit: Don't feel like I need to say it, but yes, I love the picture because of all the personality and expression I can see in the characters. It made me think the person who made it could make very interesting characters. Just compare even Squigly in that pic to her just standing there in the first pic I posted.

If I had to guess, the chair would be where all his combos (at least long ones and/or bnbs) are at but at the expense of less range, I mean both his shown non chair normals are the exact opposite, MASSIVE RANGE but godawful for combos, with the best case scenario being gimping your output by eating an OTG. Also, one side had armour the other does not.

on that note as well, I believe chair will be all his fundamental stuff but when he drops the chair you better pucker that butt hole for whatever armoured/nutty/balls to the wall/tricky/mix uppy OR ALL OF THE ABOVE tomfoolery that may or may not have the range to reach across the world and slap your nan.

also, you can "see" the chair in his hands and thus what to expect in a sense, but you dont know what hes got w/o it until he uses it, something to ponder.

Yeah, that could be a thing. But remember Beo's still got that chair throw, and maybe the grapple garb and the chair throwing will have different powers at different lvl's of hype. So if you build up enough of it you could do a combo where you could be chair toss/ retrieve combos (at a certain lvl of Hype Beo might be able to do different types of chair throws; like a bear trap version where he throws it out right in from of himself and if the opponent land on it it will snap up on them and cause a stagger state.) for swag and most likely damage cause lets face it Grendal's Arm is going to the major force that will throw in BB lvls of damage.

I wonder how much work is going into the two versions of Beowulf. I imagine only his heavy punches and kicks and his specials and blockbusters. Which sounds like they'll be as different as possible, really. Not a complaint, but I had been expecting Sekhmet to have a full moveset of her own, which I must admit was pretty unrealistic of me. Either way, Beowulf's chairless mode sounds just as fleshed out as his regular mode.

You had the first eight characters already as proof that LabZero knew what they were doing. Your prejudice was not really justified

I hope that we will me allowed to choose non chair moves as assist.

Whoa Whoa Whoa, back down. Beo can handle this. We all don't need to throw all of our chairs onto him.

Batwulf, eh? One more reason to main him, I guess.

This is a videogame, a fighting videogame, not a visual novel. Gameplay comes first.

I actually think this is the reason why so many people find it easy to get into.

The gameplay is fun as fuck.
I actually didn't even know about the lore/stories of Skullgirl until I joined this forum. (Pst. Thanks @b0nk)

After people play this game and start getting decent, everyone starts exploring other things, like the lore.

If the stories are you biggest issue with a fighting game, consider no longer playing and moving on to something more suited for you; The Sims comes to mind.

I'M NOT SORRY, CELL.

Okay, so pouty Riker sit IS his time-out animation.

*Packs up his shit and leaves*

So you mean to tell me these characters should've been one dimensional?
Seems like they were designed for a fighter but written to be something bigger.

In all honesty I'm being sarcastic and to each his own but just know the character development makes for a more successful game instead of here's ryu he wants to be the best (not saying Sf isn't good just saying someone like me has a hard time finding a character I really like cause I'm not attached)

where the heck did you get that from

I find it kind of irritating when people underestimate LabZero. Saying Beowulf is a boring no-brain-only-muscles character is as mature as saying Valentine is a sex object with no personality. His story may still contain interesting Lore material, maybe getting the canon story be seen from a third person could give a new, fresh perspective.
This is a videogame, a fighting videogame, not a visual novel. Gameplay comes first. If you are so uninterested and ignorant on gameplay you can only blame yourself. Not the character or the fans who chose him.

I'm not uninterested or ignorant on gameplay. As I've already stated, however, much of what makes the gameplay interesting is the adaptation of character idiosyncracies into their fighting style. No it's not a visual novel, but how many fighting games have a story this strong and actually implement aspects of it into the game play. What makes Valentine interesting isn't that she's a nurse or a ninja, it's that's she's a ruthless, double crossing, sadistic assassin that uses medical tools as improvised ninja weapons. Every character has something that they bring to the table that makes them unique and it's all part of who they are and it's important to the gameplay itself.

The problem I see with Beowulf is that he just doesn't fit the narrative. He feels like a plain vanilla wrestler with shades of a Schwarzenegger-esque action hero. There's wrestlers in practically every other fighting game out there. Not to mention that this game already has a grapple-style character in Cerebella who already has a very unique approach to the grappler archetype. BTW, have you ever read the actual story Beowulf? It's pretty much the story of a muscle bound hero slaying monsters and not much more. So what I'm looking at in regards to Beowulf in the context of the game as it stands is a walking mountain of testosterone piledriving the whole cast because he wants to be the strongest man alive which will follow with him stomping The Skullheart and making it's remains into a title belt. That sort of thing will fit into a heavily character driven narrative about as well as Romeo hitting Juliet with a folding chair.

I would still love for Lab Zero to prove me wrong on this and make Beowulf something that can and does work in this setting.

I have to confess that when Beo got in my sentiments were pretty similar to @BlackRoseAngel.

It is getting better. He already uses the severed arm of a rational creature that he killed as a weapon, fulfilling the creepy part of the game.

I have no idea of what story Alex has in his head but we can infer a few things about Beowulf's relevancy to the story.
  • Beowulf is a former champion wrestler coming out of retirement. One of his most notable matches is between the Gigan's Grendel and Grendel's mother. This is where he earned one of his trophies, Grendel's arm.
    • We don't know if Beowulf harbors any special resentments or prejudice against Gigan's but since he is possibly an example of a non-enhanced super human (something SG lacks) and a fighter looking for greater challenges he might enjoy fighting Gigan's since they present a high level of power and danger in a fight.
    • There is one Gigan in the intended roster, Scythana. It has been speculated that her story will include Beowulf stalking her looking to recapture the escaped Gigan criminal. This can tie into Scythana and Isaac's storyline if only briefly.
  • According to his IGG page, he came out of retirement to seek a greater challenge but did not disclose that his reappearance wouldn't be in the ring.
    • Possible vigilante angle for his comeback. Beowulf wouldn't be the only vigilante in the SG universe. D. Violet is a known vigilante so there is the slim possibility of a cameo.
  • By nature of him being a wandering warrior looking for a new challenge Beowulf's story presents a decent 'excuse plot' to have him fighting other members of the cast since some of the look imposing.
  • As a former celebrity Beowulf is probably acquainted with television personality Annie of the Stars, and popular Diva Eliza.
  • Cerebella is a known fan of Beowulf and it's been said that some of her moves are homage's to his own.
    • Expect a possible team-up between the two wrestling fanatics.
Seemingly the lone wolf of the cast :PUN:. Beowulf has a bit more freedom for what his story could cover. Personally, I'd like to see him eschew the standard fight with Marie and maybe go toe-to-toe with Eliza instead. And there is some room in his story to show off some things that aren't related to the Lab's, Mafia, or Marie.

Fair enough. I trust Alex will come up with something good. I am just airing out my disappointments.

*still hopes that Beowulf is a bookworm even though it's most likely that they won't present him that way*

Hum... what are the chances of him trespassing Bella with his arm? Just kidding.

It's an open forum.

Yeah, but people hate me when I get a strong opinion about something...it's okay...
I don't hate you, in fact I think you're one of the more favorable people in this forum, despite your dislike of Beowulf.

Funny thing about that. I actually liked wrestling back in the days of guys like The Rock, Steve Austin, Bret Hart, Mick Foley and The Undertaker.

You forgot Kane. And Gold Dust...lol he freaked me the fuck out a little.

No, I didn't forget them. I just gave you my 5 favorite guys. Goldust was kitschy and well played, but he was never more than a solid mid-carder at best. (Frankly that whole, "I'm a family man!" angle killed any chance he had of being more than that.)

Sigh. No wrestling here in Brazil. It was a thing before I was born.

In the topic of Beowulf, I think this is a story that will hit us with a surprise. With Peacock the first impression we had was that she was a psychotic monster. Hey, she is a Hero!

thanks it was getting bad. We need to contain the Wulf back to his den until the moon is full and the gates of Lab0 open for him to run out in the fields of Beta.

I just think people should have a more positive view on LabZero. Be it Beowulf, or Annie, or Scythana, or the waifu you voted for. LabZero gets so much shit from everyone outside, we should show some trust. We're their fans. Going from "this character is gonna suck until I'm proven wrong" to "I hope they do good with this character" would already be a huge step.

Like this?

(That would be an awesome super by the way)

well... it could be a very cool looking Lvl 5 super that uses all of Beo's Hype meter. and would do a crud ton of unscaled damage. but me thinks that might not happen. only time will tell.

For some reason I can't access the latest page of The Wulf Den.
It takes a long time to load and when it's finished it's just a blank screen.
Anyone else having this problem?

I figured the discussion had deviated too far from Eliza.

The ironic part is that I'm not really all that hyped for Beowulf. I just like a good old fashion lore speculation.
