Street Fighter V

@Spencer

You have 3 arguments:

1. Slippery slope
2. Unblockables
3. Ostrich head in sand (wait and see, have faith, I don't THINK this mechanic will be bad etc etc etc)

I'm not going to bother with 3 as I don't see it as an argument with any validity. We can chose to ignore anything. That doesn't make ignorance the correct way to deal with anything though, it just means that you are prepared to suffer the consequences of said ignorance, or unprepared, you will still have to suffer the consequences of said ignorance.

1. I don't think slippery slope is a viable argument to denounce A begets B begets C forms of linear logic. Just because someone put a fancy name to something and called it a trope or whatever, doesn't mean that it is all of a sudden an improper form of argument.

Slippery slope can be an improper form argument depending on context, but I don't believe it to be improper in this context. In this context I see it being a logical progression from point A to point B. This isn't a "man creates the wheel therefor man will create a nuclear bomb" argument. Steps aren't being skipped in my original example, but your nuclear war example does skip steps, it skips a whole hell of a lot of steps. You went from chip damage not killing to nuclear war... Not logical, not linear and a huge jump. I get your point and on that level your metaphor works but your metaphor fails in scope, it compares an ant to a tiger and ignores scale and species, as an example. You could see that as semantics, but I dont.

2. Unblockables are not a problem at all fundamentally with the exception of one HUGE thing:

Take a character without unblockables. Lets say that there average damage is 50% of a lifebar on their primary BNB and that they are the baseline for damage in said game.

Now take the unblockable character. That character also does 50% damage on their average BNB. But it also gets an extra 20% damage from an unblockable right after the BNB. To me, this means that the unblockable character actually does 70% damage as a whole for their BNB. I think of true unblockables as the exact same thing as combos so all other things being equal, this is a character who's damage is 20% higher than average. If ALL ELSE IS EQUAL, that means the unblockable character is fundamentally broken. So... What to do?

Well it's obvious. If all else is equal then simply making the unblockable character do less damage is the correct call and if that happens then I don't see the problem with unblockables assuming everything else is balanced such as the unblockable won't set itself up ad infinitum... Which would be dumb.

The one problem that occurs is in cases of "hard to blockables" if you design a hard to blockable character to do less damage because of the hard to blockable add on damage, but then people actually start to block the hard to blockable, then you now have an underpowered character. Which sucks and is dumb.

And if you go in the opposite direction and allow the hard to blockable character to do more damage, then you create a situation where the hard to blockable character is basically overpowered until people learn to block the hard to blockable. Which is balance by execution and is just a horrible way to balance in general.

And that's the problem with unblockables, they are fundamentally bad design unless they are TRUE, can't be blocked unblockables and they occur that way against the entire cast. That way you can balance around them. If they however are unblockable against half the cast and hard to blockable against the other half of the cast, then the characters that it is hard to blockable against become very bad matchups for the hard to blockable character once those players learn to block the setup consistently, because the hard to blockable character won't have the damage it needs in those matchups since it was designed to be a low damage character that needed to use its hard to blockables to amount to the same amount of damage as everyone else.

Chip damage to kill, however is different in that it is generally a one off thing, that EVERY character can do some better than others and is almost ALWAYS some unsafe on block stuff that does the big chip damage. This is like an srk on someone's wakeup or a super on someone's wakeup... It's only ever going to be used when it will kill and therefor balance via damage is almost never a consideration unless that character in itself fundamentally does way more damage in this context than other characters in the game with no trade off for that ability.

To wit:

The difference between unblockables and chip to kill is that unblockables are available at all times featuring the right setup whereas chip to kill is only available when chip will KILL.

So they are 2 different things man. Comparable on some levels but not on the levels that actually matter.

Gill could be dead(for good), and Urien assuming his place as leader of the Illuminati.

But it would be cool to see a balanced version of Gill in a street fighter game.

Also, i am thinking here, in the character leak, how they would work with the SFV mechanics, if the leak is true.

For instance, what would be Urin V-skill, and v-trigger? And how they would incorporate his style of gameplay (and the aegis reflector).

Make Aegis reflector his V-Trigger, similar to Nash where its a single use ability, and make his V-Skill be a normal projectile reflect (since everybody's V-Skill seems to get around fireballs).

Why do people really wan't akuma? Isn't the possibility of Ken enough for shoto clones? I hope this game has less shoto clones.

one would think that individual v triggers make clones an easier pill to swallow..if there are any.

But Gouki has demon flip, that makes him the only fun shoto to play. Put Gouki in and forget Ken =)

and you know when he comes he will have a Fukua body pillow which if you anger him he will use to beat you to death.

Cammy.

That said, I personally like R.Mika as a character but felt part of her costume was a bit much....it was the heart nipples. It just looked off. I like everything else though.
Her design looked rather "woah" to me when I first saw her back in the 90s, but from the evidence I found Female Pro Wrestling/ Joshi Puroresu (depending on the league) is over the top in feats and outfits. That said, a redesign can be over-the-top and fun for her.

Speaking of wrestlers, I'd love a new Slammasters game too! I really miss Black Widow :(

I've seen that a few moments ago.

Ken and Akuma are fan favorites in general, i don't see a street fighter game without at least ken, but who knows.

Like, i understand the hate for clones in general, but there is one thing that i hate, that will become more common without clones, mirror matches. Imagine, with ryu, akuma and ken, the shoto players will scatter to those 3 characters, based on preference, gameplay style or etc, but, if you have only ryu, than shoto players will pick ryu.
And besides, there is some (i think a minority, but they are there, like me), that plays a character, because they like said character, in personality, visual, or whatever.

Still not seeing any nipple hearts... or narts if you will.

Not to get all gender politics on everyone, but I actually don't mind the hypersexualization of some characters male or female. I simply object to the hyper-sexualization of all or even most portrayals of males and more commonly females.

I say put Mika in, exactly as is... narts and all. But for fuck's sake, Capcom... one decently dressed female with tits that don't move like ocean waves would go a long, long way.

Anyway, my shoto fantasy line-up would be Ryu, Ken, and Sagat.

Rose, Sakura, Makoto, Ibuki, Chun li to a certain point.

There is a lot of non fan service girls in street fighter.

If R. Mika ended up being a female alt for Alex, I'd be cool with that. If not, then I hope they could try to make her half as cool as Alex. Otherwise, it would probably be best to just replace her slot with an extra Alex, so it'd be easier to find Alex on the select screen. They should also replace Chun Li's slot with Alex while they work on getting her boobs fixed.

Seriously though, as far as new additions go, I'd still love to see a character like Fair Libra become playable, especially since Cammy forgot her skates this time. Not only does she come off as laid back and sporty, but I think it'd be neat to see someone finally bring that roller-style back to SF, without having to drag along a mech-arm.

It's not the "over the top" part, I actually like watch Lucha highlights. It's just the heart nipples. Terrible, pandering design imo.

I never even noticed the nipple hearts till this thread.

The pigtails though... Noticed them right off the bat :)

Don't get me wrong. I love R.mika. She and Elena are my favorite female SF characters. I just love how free-spirited she is and how it shows in her fighting style. The nipple thing is easily gotten over and I'd love to see her in SFV regardless of her costume choice, but I'd just prefer a redesign.

TBH I didn't even remember about the heart nipples until people started mentioning it in here. Her most striking feature to me was always her pigtails.

Sakura, really? Her entire outfit is based around school girl outfit fetishism and subject to a million panty shots.

I don't mind her design but to claim its not fan service is kind of silly.

Although Sakura is way too old to be wearing that uniform any more, its a type of fashion statement in Japan - I wouldn't call it fan service unless there was anything explicit, she does wear shorts underneath.

Because he's the fun one.

While she does wear a school girl outfit, is like Thrasher said, there is nothing explicit, or suggestive about sakura, not panty shots, not clevage, not at all.

not... really. It has been stated that Sakura wears her old sailor uniform to remind her of her beginning times of becoming a fighter and so that when ever she meets Ryu he will be able to instantly recognize her. She idolizes Ryu, almost to the point where people can easily believe that she has a small crush on the man. Remember she's around 20-21 so this kind of behavior is still quite possible (trust me, I've seen it in College.)

That's an excellent point, she wears that uniform to remind her of those early days. This is great stuff, also Rachel Alucard is 1000 years old so she isn't a loli or anything guys, I do believe Linne has the same thing going on so perverts rest easy.

I do hope my point is clear.

Edit - I actually remembered where I was posting so I will drill the point home instead of using subtle comments. If SFV introduced a character who was wearing nothing but a bikini but they wrote in her origin story that she dressed in that manner due to lack of confidence and that helped her get over it, that would not change the fact that she was still wearing a damn bikini in a "martial arts*" tournament. Obvious pandering would be obvious, you don't explain it away through plot.

The thing is, sakura's design is not sexy, not suggestive at all.

People do have fetishes with school uniforms? yeah.

But sakura isn't showing anything special, she even wears a short below the skirt. She wasn't designed as a sexy woman or anything like that.

I honestly can't see sakura as fan service.

well, there was that one time her elbows looked like a vagina, but that's as far as it went.

subjective.
We live in a world where diaper and poop fetishes exist...
There's a relatively large amount of people with school girl fetishes.

Elena, only Elena didn't have any particular excuse for how she dressed
Yet people love Elena in spite of, and many because of, her bikini

hey, she is a strong independent fighter who don't need no one's approval of what she wears when there's beats in her head.

Yeah, i know, but normally even designs that appeal to that public tend to use more explicit things like bigger breasts, panty shots, and things like that. if you think that way, everything is fan service to someone.

Seeing as how Capcom have a clear difference between the female characters for eye candy (cammy, Viper, Chun Li, Poison) and characters with not much or none fan service (Makoto, Ibuki, Sakura, Rose), i believe that when they designed sakura they weren't thinking on the fanservice side, well, at least not mainly that.

I think the artists behind street fighter were always really clear about fan service and suggestive characters, not only with the girls, but with the mans, they don't fear putting a clevage, and they don't fear putting a muscular man wearing only underwear.

And that becomes stronger in the alternative costumes of the characters, while cammy even gets a black cat leather suit, sakura gets what, a dress, a gi and some kind of sports uniform.

I really do hope that Sakura's main (if she gets in) is her Gym Teacher uniform, heck, it was even in her SSF4 ending
aw yeeeeeeahhhhhhh. Time to do your morning stretches.

okay sorry. but like come on it's a good uniform.

actually if she got redesigned this would be okay

I would rather have it be her gi alt more than anything.
that to me seems like what a more adult Sakura would be.

Before Street fighter V was announced, i used to imaginate, a new street fighter, and Ryu and Ken would be old, and they wouldn't have the normal shoto moveset, they would become something like gouken and akuma are in sf4, and sakura would take the place of the "regular shoto", she would still have her traits (her dragon punch moving foward and her hadouken chargeable in exchange of range), and maybe Mel or Sean as the "ken" counterpart.
