  • I think a cool training mode feature would be the ability to program in combos and have them show up on screen as you do them. Essentially how trial modes in fighting games work, where they give you a combo then as you do each part they light up, except you'd be able to design the trial yourself. It's always a feature I've wanted but never seen a game do and it would help with learning longer strings.
Hey, Mike... I want to make a fighting game, as an university thesis. What do I need to know? :o
    Cheesedragon
    Cheesedragon
That's a bad pretense to make an FG...

    Wanna elaborate?

What do I need to know about making a fighting game? What do I need to take in consideration in regards to controls, frame data and all that jazz? :o
...I may have to do a thread in the forums, tho...

Might as well make a thread so you can properly explain yourself.
Heya, are PS4 analog deadzones still getting tweaked?
    Fumako
    Fumako
    Just tried it.
I am currently only able to test it on mac, but DS4 functions perfectly here. I remember PC DS4 being identical to PS4 though.
    Mike_Z

What I mean is, are the dead zones still unsatisfactory on PC?
If so, I can fix them on PC and it will port to PS4, and I can test in the Beta.
    Fumako
    Fumako
Really sorry... PC broke recently and I can't really test it...
Don't know anyone else I can borrow a PC from so I don't know what to do now :/
i see on your twitter where you said you wrote instructions on how to implement your controller drivers but I'm having trouble finding them myself if you could point me in the right direction that'd be AMAZING.

You gotta have a working PS4 version before you can license the driver, and they're written in C++ so you would have to modify the deep guts of PS4 Unity to make them work.

    Soooooooo anyway

Yes, I play this game. I was just at Northwest Majors playing this game in the tournament and doing commentary. And playing GGAC+R and VSav, for completeness.

    Why?

Hey, I'm new here, but not new to Skullgirls, and I was wondering if I could ask you something over PM. I was told by someone in the Indivisible indiegogo comments that I might have luck with that here. It's both art-related and Beowulf-related.

    Mike_Z
Wha? Sure. Why didn't you just PM me? Everyone else does. :^P
Hello Mike. I was talking with the sprite artist that I'm working with for my game, and he was telling me that he couldn't find a decent explanation for how fighting game input buffers work (that is, how they're designed for inputting/recognizing specials and such ), for a side project he's been working on for a long time.

Do you think you could direct me towards any basic explanations of the concept?
    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
How you write it also varies, SG specifies "P" = Punch pressed, "^P" = Punch released, "*P" = either one, etc. Charging an input just means "require it for at least N frames in a row with no slop frames allowed". Can also specify (L) for Lazy dirs which include dirs next to it, like B(L) means UB/B/DB, and D(L) means DB/D/DF. Etc.
    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
The obvious plus to doing it this way is that if the motion wasn't entered this exact frame, all you are checking for is "was P pressed?" and then you're done. So the work is minimal.

I messaged him all that, and he said he found it very helpful. Thank you.
Hello Mike, could you tell me where the song "New Beginning" (the first one in your last stream) is from ? I like it a lot.

Would I be able to participate in the pc beta while getting the full release on ps4?
You mentioned a while back that the digital copy tier can only be redeemed on one console. I would just like a clarification. ^-^

Yes, I think everyone gets PC Beta access regardless of platform chosen, as long as you're a backer.

No? SCEA has been absolutely amazingly helpful, loaned us devkits/testkits when we needed extras, allowed the Indivisible prototype to be put out on PS4, pushed things through for us...they're GREAT. Sure, there are things about Sony-the-giant-corporation that are frustrating, but on the whole I like SCEA a lot. I'd stand by 'em.

Hey Mike, just writing to let you know that I got around to playing Super Metroid last month. Glad I did, and thanks for giving me the public thrashing my ignoramus sorely deserved. Have a good one.

In the title screen it was ok until....The character selection everythin was CRAZY!
I dunno how to send u a message for show you my FB Profile and my stream on youtube in this forum.

    Please i need an answer

Well, you gonna play The U Game over break? Look, i know the fandom's cancer, but it REALLY IS one of the most genius game's I've played in a long long time. Forget about the fandumb and appreciate it for what it is! I watch SU even though the fandom's cancer incarnate, just aviod tumblr! Please give it a chance in spite of the audience.

Yes, a bug is a bug. It also doesn't remove the mouse cursor in fullscreen.
Anyway, I completed it without killing anything, and then I completed it again with the I guess fully-pacifist ending.
Is my opinion valid yet? It had some good parts, and it tried strongly to tug one's heartstrings, butI don't think I'd play it again or especially recommend it.

    Leaving it here forever.
Glad to see that Indivisible's success didn't prevent you from continuing to support the SG scene. I woulda' said "hey" at NEC but I'm a tourney newcomer, and my performance was terrible enough to keep me on the timid side. I just wanted to say thanks and that I love L0's development style. I also appreciate your no-holds barred approach to questions and criticism; honesty really means a lot to us.
    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
My performance was probably more terrible, except in Third Strike. :^P

We're not droppin' SG, there is still the console lobby update left! And now that we're done I can finally PLAY it. :^)

You're more than welcome, no-holds-barred is all I do. Heh.
Any chance you can link the "blog post where i wrote about what's gonna be in Indivisible"? mentioned in the last stream? I'd google it but idk what blog website to look for it.

How do you measure a snake?

    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
I like snakes too! That answer is in the vein of the, "Sure I know how many cows are in that herd: 468!" "How'd ya do that so fast?" "Simple, just count the legs and divide by 4."
Hey Mike, bit of a random question that popped into my head but how much input did you have as gameplay designer on the stages? Like when Alex or Willy or other artists are designing the stages do you ever step in to say if something would work or be distracting to players?
    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
Yep, I did. Bath of Sekhmet went through several revisions for backdrop and lighting, as did a few other stages. We also updated New Meridian and some of the darker stages later based on player feedback.
Hmm, since you spilled the beans on why you think Portal 1 is better than Portal 2 (i thought it sucked too, but my complaint was more like "where the fuckin flings".), you mind sharing why you think Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is one of your best games of all time? I heard something like that on a stream once and damn near came. I play that shit to this day.
    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
Because it's hella fun, and they gave him the ability to do ALL the cancels you would ever want. Everything works like it "should", for lack of more characters to explain with. :^P

    The plot is terrible, though.
    Cheesedragon
    Cheesedragon
Joe Fixit is the perfect replacement for any sort of "plot" lol. His mission triggered lines are still hilarious even if you're not paying attention to it. You can pm the rest if you want :3
    Cheesedragon
    Cheesedragon
Oh, and Ron Perlman. Ron Perlman is also the perfect replacement for plot.
Hey Mike, I have a quick question to ask. When do you think Skullgirls will have a full voiced story for the PC/Steam version? I know y'all talked about it but I can find the source to where it's at. I do recall that it's going to be DLC and I just wanted to know if there is a aprox. release date or if y'all are still working on it?

There wasn't any subtext beyond "after we stop celebrating"/"after we stop crying." :^P My only point was, I'm not available to do it until I'm available again. I wasn't trying to say like, "Fund Indivisible or NEVER"...

    thefocuswobbler
Oh, now I understand, thank you! :) I'm supporting all of y'all at Lab Zeros and 505 games! Good luck!
There was a patch today but no notes, what exactly was added/removed/changed in today's build?
Quote from UGC: "Oh peacock's small lasers have shadows...... that they shouldn't have. Remind me on Skullheart so i can fix that"

    No problem Mike
Regarding the Spoon conversation, I used Vera alot whenever I had just one party member hurt and didn't want to use the group heals. Never realized that Spoon may have just been more effective.

Oh dude, Legaia is amazing, it's easily in my top 5 RPGs.
The fact that the Slowness Chain exists demonstrates how great the design is.
Not the same for Legaia 2, though...

It made the character automatically go last in battle. So you could tell them to do a Spoon (:^) and you'd always be at full health the next turn.

Hello Mike. I was just wondering, do you think you could give me (as short as you want) explanation of why all games have minimum 3 frames of input latency? I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and it struck me as so weird that with all the technological advances in gaming, that number can't (?) be improved.

If it's too much trouble for you, forget about it though lol.

Assume things happen as late as possible.
If the game checks input at the beginning of a frame, you press a button on frame 9.5, the game picks it up on frame 10. 1f lag.
Game processes the button, updates the game, and prepares a screen. This takes a frame to DO, so that's 2f.
Game sends new frame to the TV. Assume it just misses the vblank period and the TV will display it the next time it updates. That's 3f.
    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
It was shorter than I wanted, because of the 420 character limit. :^P

Hey Mike, last night you said when designing SG characters that the char design came first, then playstyle. Was this the case for the DLC characters as well? On the IGG character influences, you'd see stuff like Order Sol and Donovan for Umbrella and Eliza. Did you have a preconceived idea for how each character plays as a way to entice people to donate, or was the process the same regardless?

The process was the same, we did some small brainstorms for the IGG characters too.
    Mike_Z
    Mike_Z
To clarify that - we mostly did brainstorming sessions just for influences during the voting, but for the characters that got made, we did full brainstorming sessions like normal, with no preconceived notions of what might be, when we were making them. Influences were more like, I could see this character having Spiral-like zoning or whatever.

Portal 1 is very open, Portal 2 is not.
Portal 1 is "here is this puzzle, FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PIECES ARE then solve it". Where do useful portals go? Etc.
Portal 2 is "here are these puzzle pieces, put them together correctly and solve it". It is ALWAYS much more obvious what you are working with because they do things like limit which surfaces are portalable or goo-able, etc.
(The writing is just as good in both.)
