Anime/Manga General Discussion

Speaking of Wulin warriors I'm going to just leave this here.

This dub is hilariously bad. But the show is actually made by the same production house as Thunderbolt Fantasy and you can see a lot of the same movement tics and combat styles in both shows. Their backgrounds definitely improved over the last decade by a large margin. And they also seem to have adopted stop motion along the way.

yo that opening is hype as fuck

I can't wait for the full version where they actually get to count to 99

Oh yeah that jo jo opening yeah yeah yeah

So much more meat to this opening than the first one.

Now we can get into full blown horror mystery territory.

yo, the new characters in Thunderbolt Fantasy.
I can't wait to see them get Urobutchered.

I'm really glad that the first episode of GATE immediately points out how the main character has no redeeming qualities.

More shows should do that so that I know when to drop them before the 11 minute mark

I like that they unabashedly show that he is a massive nerd who got a fantasy world catered to him and he finds it cumbersome.

also who cares about plot? I just watch it to see the Defense Force steam roll magic and shit.

I just don't watch shows that star otaku out of principle these days.

Glad one shot show was at least honest about it, though

I also think the anime is fine because I heard the original story on the internet was super xenophobic and I'm not about that.

Thunderbolt Fantasy is still bringing in the highest quality of puppet action scenes.

we got demons, we got zombies, we got strong female protagonists! it's still really good.
also Lie Mei is my favorite character. her design is my absolute favorite.
and her fight with Shou was awesome.

The quickest way to get me to stop giving a shit about your show is to make the protagonist an unlikable douche. It just completely kills any emotional stake I have in it, especially if it happens part way through and if they take better characters down with them (Fucking damn it Re:ZERO). I don't even hate protagonists who are straight-up bad people; 91 Days is shaping to be amazing and I'm pretty sure the protagonist of that is going to end up a serial killer or dead by episode 5, but so many shows seem to think that a good protagonist is just a shitbag; not a villain, not a conflicted anti-hero, just a piece of feces, and it's getting fucking annoying.

then lemme tell you about Thunderbolt Fantasy.

the main character is a guy who basically gets caught up in a magic adventure because he took an umbrella left for a stone Buddha, and a man nearby told him that he should repay the debt to the stone Buddha by helping the first person he sees. he finds a girl being chased by swordsmen, the man doesn't wish to get involved but remembers the debt to the stone Buddha, he then saves the girl only to find out she is one of two protectors of a magic powerful sword created to smite evil.

fucking sick ass puppet work ensues.

after all the shit he's been through him being a jerk for a few episodes doesnt bother me in the slightest, in fact it's a completely realistic way to react after everything that's happened to him so far. I also feel for him now more than ever, I'm getting pissed off right there with him because as the viewer I know how much he's struggling to fix everything.

I watched the show up til' Episode 15 in a night, so maybe I missed some intracacies here or there, but going from 'Kinda stupid but wants to protect the people he cares about at whatever cost' to 'Listens to nothing that the much smarter people around him say and insults the way of life of a group that he's moderately friendly with and becoming clingy to the point of absurdity' isn't quite what I'd call good development. It also doesn't help that I really don't like the pacing right now, and I feel like the last few resets have had very little purpose in solving the problem of the cultists attacking. The whole show is just getting annoying to watch, and that's the last thing I want to happen. Maybe that's the difference; his change in character is annoying me, not making me feel for him.

I guess that it is just the difference. While you find it annoying I'm more connected to this character than any other I've been in a long time. Listening to those "smarter" people isn't going to save their lives though.

Antagonizing your best chance of backup also doesn't help to save their lives. Rem is great, but she's clearly not enough to take down the cultists. Being a dick to Admiral lady and healer-guy and healer guy's badass butler won't help, and though it's before the current reset point, neither will talking shit to the entire royal guard. Also, what the hell did he think he was doing spending a full cycle doing literally nothing (Because it sure as hell seemed like he was faking it by the end)? That whole "I'm important!" thing killed all my good will, and now he's stuck in a beyond shitty situation because he got so high off his own stench that he made everyone strong hate him. By the last few episodes, I spent so much of my time frustrated by egomaniac that had replaced the main character that it turned me off of the show, at least for now. If you like it, good for you! I just don't think Subaru spending multiple cycles doing everything wrong and gaining no useful information after isolating himself from all the people that could help him particularly engaging.

he's gained more info by failing than you seem to think had he just sat and did nothing like everyone told him to do. As for the admiral candidate, her lack in regard for innocent life without compensation was disgusting, she deserved it (I even rooted for Subaru). Now her butler, as I recall he wasnt mean to him even once. As for him being "high off his own stench" I guess he could have approached the situation with Emilia differently, but not being able to tell people the truth would put a mental strain on anyone. But as you said we just have very different outlooks

What does he know that's useful? That the cultists will attack on the road, that they kill everyone, that there's a cold room and a giant head-decapitation lady. How does any of that help him fight off the cultists, exactly?

Look, if you can justify him ranting about how important he is after royally fucking up at the royal selection and antagonizing everyone around him, then spending the next episode brooding about how 'they just don't get it, man' and refusing to apologize for telling a royal knight that he and all his peers are just there because of their families, even after the nicest guy in the goddamned series practically begs him to, if you can still like him after all that, then good for you I guess. I can't. I can't internally justify that level of asshoe-itude at all.

He knows when, where, and even who the leader of the cult is, which is alot more had he sat around twiddling his thumbs.

As for his rant, once again as I said before that depends on your outlook. You keep forgetting the psychological hits he takes with every death and expect him to be perfectly fine and level headed which quite honestly would make for a very boring and unbelievable protagonist

I don't think you're supposed to like subaru very much at all. He's a super self-centered dude that operates on a really one-track mind. Especially in last week's episode nearly every main character he talked to made a point to tell him how much of a shit he's being. I'm not a writer or versed in writing stuff, but I'm pretty sure you're being made to dislike how he's acting so when the bad stuff happens you either think "see, stop being a shit subaru you deserved this." or you just feel bad I guess. The show takes him to his worst so you can want him to be at his best, or something along those lines. He's a shitty dude that puts himself in shitty situations by making shitty decisions.

I thought he made some progress as a character after going from "haha yeah im in a videogame" (that really really annoyed me) to actually making an effort to understanding the world he's in. But that ends and he goes back to running around without asking questions and bumbles around causing problems cause he's gotta be the big boy who saves the day and fuck you for not helping.

I'm looking forward to seeing if/when he makes the full transition to antagonist cause I got a feeling theres some stuff going on in this show of Bad Decisions Man and His Cool Friends.

this is it everyone
Bleach ends next week

good night, sweet prince
you were always pretty bad

Now maybe Tite Kubo can draw something I can actually read.

So, I figured since I haven't talked much about the anime I'm currently watching, I figured now would be a good time as ever.

JoJoPart 4: still really good. Next week is hype babies and fair fights.

Tiger Mask W: okay, this series I didn't even know was coming out, so I got to look at this from a neutral viewpoint, and it's fantastic. If you want a pure pro wrestling based anime then look no further. This show takes cues from the original anime, Tiger Mask, and cranks it to 11. So lots of machismo, cheese, and all around good animation. Also, the naming conventions in this series is super ridiculous. The rival character's name is fucking Tiger The Dark.

Kaiju Girls: not much to say about this series. Just a cute shorts series about girls with the souls of classic Tauburaya kaiju teaming up to saving the world. It's cute, it's funny, and it's just flat out ridiculous. Like, there's so many little touches about it that click if you know anything about the source material. Like with Pigmon being powered by her love of people.

I haven't watched anything for ages, tbh, and so I'm not even sure what's airing. In the last few days I re-picked up some of the series I had left unfinished, so hopefully I'll be watching more again soon.

I'm there, to be honest, I've been lacking the attention to watch anime for quite a while, I kinda wanna rewatch Kill la Kill

compared to other anime seasons this one definitely isn't the strongest, some things I am watching from it though are Drifters, Flip Flappers, and Kaiju Girls.
mostly patiently waiting for the new Baki OVA

I mean, the best show of the season (Thunderbolt Fantasy) ended, so now I'm just trying to find what I want to watch.

I might try Flip Flappers, but there's also other stuff I want to watch.

Started watching Drifters and a lot of people were recommending Yuri on ice, which was actually kinda nice and probably will continue to watch. Obviously IBO is also on this list but that's a given.

Honestly Thunderbolt fantasy is my Anime of the year and was 10/10.

Drifters and bungo stray dogs is the only thing I care about this season although I feel like eventually I'll start watching Dead or Alive the anime.
