Big Band Story Mode Discussion - MASSIVE SPOILERS

So does anyone else ship Big Band/Ileum now, because I totally do
Lab 8 Family.png

I like to think that Big Band and Ileum regard each other with the same attitude as a husband and wife after twenty years of marriage. It may not be as obvious as a young couple madly in love, but they care about each other deeply as well as the kids they look after. Sometimes a certain look in their eyes says it all, and if you look closely you can see that this is the first time we actually see Ileum's eyes, when she's expressing concern for Ben's safety.
The flame between Big Band and Ileum doesn't burn like a roaring bonfire, it's a hearth who's fire burns humbly and keeps the home warm.

You fuckers better not spread the word that I get sappy like that, I will cut you.
I love you all, but yeah I will cut you. >:/
loool, xD thats cute

I think it's more about Painwheel/Leduc.

That's totally a thing, right?

I definitely enjoyed Big Band's story mode, but man, I shoulda remembered not to play it on Nightmare at 2 in the morning. As usual, the first chunk goes quick, but then I get to Marie, and suddenly I have to take breaks every ten minutes to wipe the sweat off of my controller. I think the sun was coming up by the time I finally beat her!

Anyway, aside from some of the cool stuff you guys already mentioned about Big Band's story, I also liked how the script made a concerted effort to use the word "Skullgirls" in context with Big Band's life and experiences. It was good to see how much weight the term had in relation to a male character, and hopefully for newcomers, this will finally put a cap on the "Why is it still called Skullgirls?" debacle.

Hopefully...

Hm. I noticed that peacock's attitude to Marie seems to be different in Big band's story.

In her story mode, she seems to be sad and a bit hesitant when she learned who the Skullgirl was....

I might be just mistaken of course. But still....

you mean she was less friendly with her?

By the time Ben reached them both the dialogue of Peacock's story has already passed and the fight has ocurred, but this time Marie won.

Also, Patricia mentions that the Heart was closer to corrupt her. Marie's will was against the ropes.

In a narrative stand point I think they should have shown a scene of Marie's Death and Peacock's sorrow from Ben's point of view, it would have shown how a parent deals with a child's sorrow.

Well, spilled milk.

Agreed. I was expecting an emotional farewell between Marie and Patricia. I do not know why they didn't do that.

The only reason I can think off was to not take out the focus of Ben. But, as I said, they could have presented it in a way that would make him shine even more.

But if they did, the story would be perfect and other fighting games would have to admit to be bankrupt on ideas.

Big Band's story mode was awesome. I was so excited the whole way through, the character interactions were really well done. Even Stanley got some lines. I'd known for awhile, but this story mode really solidified Lab 8 as my favourite faction in Skullgirls. I hope one day more of its members get to be playable! ^^

It's very fun to create children. Especially in a laboratory, where you can make test tube children. Which is also kinda depressing.

The Lab 8 children aren't test tube babies, they're orphans who were crippled and handicapped due to the war and other circumstances, but were given a second chance at life in Lab 8. I think it's more heartwarming than depressing.

I wasn't implying that the Lab 8 children themselves were test tube babies. I clearly knew they were orphans, but I just tried to make a horrible joke that is horrible.

It's ok, mad science is always confused with conventional forms of procreation. Lab 0 has no such qualms about bio engineering super soldiers and the like.

(Actually, it was Lab 3 who made the super soldiers! Like Panzerfaust. The more you know!)

Lab 0 is the off-the-books Lab that seems to be into producing human weapons like Lab 8, but with none of the reservations about committing horrible sins in the name of scientific progress. From what it seems, some of the other Labs might have been that way as well, but they're all shut down now anyway. At the very least, Lab 8 is the moral Lab.

Inhuman experiments designed to surpass the limitations of both morality and human strength are called super soldiers where I come from. Who needs roided up patriots when manufacturing obedient abominations capable of taking on threats like the skullgirl?

Real talk I keep forgetting which lab does which except for 0 & 8, thank you.

We don't owe you anything, man. But I suppose I could draw some up. I've got a lot of Big Band and Peacock, not so much Ileum. I pretty much completely revile shipping, but hey--even my cold, shriveled heart finds the family dynamics in the Lab 8 crew pretty adorable.

Chill out, I didn't imply that at all, unless you're completely incapable of detecting a joke.

Quick question, I always thought the river king and medici's were two separate groups with no interactions with each other. But based on Bella, the Medici's have some stake in the River King Casino. Has that always been the case?
As for the story, like the fact there was a reason for all the fights but thought squigly's was much better
Yeah, I thought that as well. Namely because I think the River King is a Triads boss/Mandarin.

Just mashed Super Sonic Jazz my way through Mr Birdland's story and your opinion mirrors mine - good that every fight has dialogue sequences but I think Squigly's was better. Nonetheless, all the art assets that appeared were a pleasant surprise. Hopefully the raised bar is the set standard for the upcoming stories.

And special mention to Leduc's Glasgow Smile. That was certainly unexpected.

I know everything I've said has basically already been said, but the truth cannot be too often repeated.

Surprised Big Band can take off the breathing apparatus, yadda yadda, but I really like the look of his stubble. It has a real manly, charming quality about it that I just can't pin.

Honestly, that story wasn't as sad as I was being led to believe. Skullgirls has had a tendency to thrive on the bittersweet, and I know that some people were expecting Big Band's story to be a tearjerker...but really, it was basically just this:
[Opponent]: "You're living on borrowed time, BB, and today your time runs out!" (Or some other, more blunt version of "You're gonna die now, 'kay?")
Big Band: "Hell no. I'm too awesome to die here."
(They fight, BB wins)
And that's not sad, that's just Big Band being awesome. Which he is, but so is (Most of) the rest of the cast, and they didn't escape the bittersweet taste of a dark chocolate ending, either.

That being said, I adored it anyway. BB's monologues on top of the bridge at the beginning and end, the way every fight rationally made sense, the way he interacted with the Skull Heart...man, it was perfect. When people ask me why Skullgirls is awesome in the future, I'm going to point to Big Band's Story Mode.
Seriously. This is my proof that Skullgirls's Canon Story could and would blow every other fighting game ever's story out of the water. There's depth, there's character interaction, there's a lot of art made just for its purpose, the world feels very in-depth and fleshed out instead of being cardboard standups like they are in a lot of other fighting games...just...this is how you do it right here, folks, this is how you do it. Larger scale, multiple characters, playing as the bad guys to beat the crap out of the protagonists when the story demands it...and that's how you make an excellent canon story. Full stop.

(I did beat him on the day he came out...delayed reaction.)

Well Shit.
sorry

The lack of voice tunes indicating sarcasm, joking, etc on forum posts is a sitcom on itself.

Have been thinking about the Casino, too.

Blackmail? Treacherous partnership? Challenging to a gang war? What could it be?

Gang wars please, gang war plots are fucking awesome.

The more and more we talk about this storymode the more and more I wish we had Rich Brown narrate all of his story mode lines. I'm dead serious here, I'd donate quite a bit for a little extra audio from the cast. I know L0 is done with crowd funding and such, but do we know if they take donations at all?

No, a better idea: Have the story mode complete with animated cutscenes and voice acting instead of just emotion portraits and hand-drawn pictures. I find the normal gameplay to already be nicely animated and it has the most fps in a fighting game, so if they can animate the gameplay so well, why not try to make good cutscenes that would probably be just as great if not better? I've never really heard of any of these voice actors until playing this game, but they sure as hell do a great job at voicing the characters (except for Cerebella and Parasoul, but that's just me), with Rich Brown's voice being the shiniest example in my opinion. "Rest easy, Sienna.", "Hear that ringin'? Recess is over.", "Clean up your act"; some of the smoothest fighting game quotes I've ever heard. The story feels a bit like that of Street Fighter or Darkstalkers/Vampire in my opinion, but I must admit the story is more enjoyable to read than both of them. As far as writing for video game stories go, this one is a top tier in my opinion. Sadly, as good as the story is, it doesn't really have a fun game mode or animated cutscenes to go with it, but that's again just my opinion.

Skullgirls OVA, anyone? An OVA was Made for this game:
