Gaming General Discusison

"How can you speak two 'r's?" I died laughing XD

Also, I believe 4 was the first to really implement that. 3 didn't have any during combat

Do you guys know when the next big gaming convention is?
It's been pretty slow lately as far as new information on games or new reveals...

Convention for what exactly? Are you talking about press events like CES (just passed), E3, PAX, etc., or are you talking about FGC/Anime stuff where things are still announced but not in the same quantities?

True but hearing bosses say crazy shit mid battle was always a highpoint for the series lol.

True, and it would effect battle, too! It's too bad that game was marred by some issue with the map and general difficulty.

Speaking of the kick starter talk from last page, I'm hoping this makes it through on the last two days stretch

Dev's seem to know what they're doing. Especially agree with that part about Flow. And I like that they dropped the pretenses about "retro" (dev said on a forum he'd make something that looked like Guilty Gear if he could), even though the sprite work is probably better than 90% of indie games already.

I'm surprised it's been such an uphill battle for Steel Assault to hit their goal, but I hope they can reach it. I had been debating whether to back it or Children of Morta with the little bit of money I set aside, but it quickly became obvious which group needed the help more.

Honestly, I'm starting to wonder if the term "retro" should even be applied to stuff like this anymore. While games like Steel Assault and Shovel Knight are obviously inspired by old NES titles, their gameplay and visuals can still hold value for modern gaming today. In these cases, the developers aren't just focused on bringing back "the good old days," they're trying to make good games in general. When time, budget, and manpower are limited, who can blame them for sticking with the stylish and practical aesthetics of the 8/16-bit era? Should we expect every modern artist to abandon oil and canvas to learn ZBrush?

We just need to accept that pixels and platforming are as much a staple of video games as pen and paper is to role-playing games. It's not always about nostalgia. Sometimes it's just about the styles of entertainment that people prefer to enjoy.

Another classic game franchise is pressing its luck on Kickstarter. This time around, it's ToeJam and Earl. Apparently, they're combining elements of all three TJ&E games, but are focusing it around the gameplay of the original as they originally intended with the sequels. It's only been up for two days, but they're already at over a quarter of their $400,000 goal.

Go Go Nippon I don't understand but Agarest gets frontpaged on Steam pretty much every day. People see it, look into it, and buy it. Then regret everything. People don't buy Ikaruga mostly because they don't know it exists. Shame really, I don't have Ika on steam but I have it on 360 and it's a mindblowing game.

That and, it has waifus. As a game, it's a kusoge poor man's FFT/FE, but it also has anime chicks who wear far less than what the girls in FFT/FE do. All the people on my friends list who are massive weeaboo's ran out and bought the game day one and than proceeded to flood my steam activity page with screenshots of their waifus for the next month.

Ika probably took a hit from being previously available on many other consoles for a while. I just hope it did well enough vs the cost of porting that Treasure didn't take a hit. They were hinting at making a new game, maybe even specifically for pc/steam, so I would hate for them to lose any money on something like this.

Good to see Trails in the Sky did great though.

This. Being a port means it's harder to drum up release hype, and the game is in a relatively niche genre to begin with.

Yeah. Sadly Astebreed got similar sales despite how new and ridiculously pretty it looks. Which also scares me a tad. On the other hand, Metal Slug 3 did really well, so there's still an audience. And I guess overall these numbers are pretty good for these games. Hard to say in some ways since we don't know what was invested in them.

It's a crime that doujin games on Steam don't get more attention. Astebreed's production values are through the roof, especially when you compare it to Edelweiss' earlier games (which are still awesome and everyone should buy them).

Astebreed and Croixleur are both getting PS4 ports, which is pretty awesome. Bit mad that PS4 Croixleur is getting new content, but I don't doubt that Nyu Media is going to see if they can get the Steam version patched.

I played Croixleur. It wasn't un-fun, but it was pretty basic.

Interested to see the final version of this. Schoolgirl Hitman.

really does look interesting.

a simulator I can get behind.

Anyone else been playing Google Pac-Man today? I've already wasted way too much time on it. If you try to beat every map you end up on, it gets nuts really quick.

I actually found some neat spots in Rome and Barcelona, and it took me to some other nice areas around Tokyo, Philly, and Atlanta. I honestly thought it'd be easier to find some good maps in Chicago, but apparently the thing gets mad when you find a decent grid. I dunno how it can complain about "not enough road" in the middle of a major city, and then be okay with you playing on a single highway in China where you just press left to win. Whaaatever!

Hopefully someone at Google will keep this going. It's almost fun enough to make me forgive them for the changes to Gmail.

Off topic, but I lost faith in Google when they nixed Google Reader and the removal of discussions search made me decide to never sign up for another of their services again.

Hey, that's what it's here for, right?

But yeah, I can't blame you. I kinda had to stick it out with Gmail, and I use Hangouts sometimes when it's more convenient for friends, but really the only Google product I consider "reliable" anymore is Sketchup. Otherwise, Google's just a big digital circus now. Sometimes it's fun and innovative, but you just never know which act the clowns will screw with next.

The only things I still use are Gmail (just because there's so much stuff linked to it that it'd be a pain to move) and the Google search itself. I'd use DuckDuckGo if only the search results were as relevant, and I'm considering eventually switching to one of the newer privacy-based email services eventually.

This might be interesting for Mega Man fans

Recently translated developer diary for Mega Man X.

Some pretty funny stuff in there, whatdoyoumeanIhavetoredrawallthefirststagesprites etc.
Back when I wanted to go into gamedev as a profession, this kind of thing was my crack. Anything to vicariously live the life of someone working on a game.

yeah, this whole thing with steam is not gonna last.
just ride it out and it'll be gone before we know it.

What's really sad is that Konami used to be one of the greatest game companies ever.

How the mighty have fallen.

But that's what happens when all your old staff is let go/moves on. Same with Capcom.

So, not sure how many of you play Gmod, but one of it's most popular fixtures, Gmod Tower ( A MASSIVE Virtual World where you run around, play games, and in general piss around, it's exceptionally fun!) is pressing it's luck and running a Kickstarter to make a standalone game in the Unreal 4 Engine with far more freedom, and for the same general experience, sounds awesome, but it's got 10 days and it's 80,000 short of it's goal.
Probably won't do much, but I'll link the Kickstarter here!

Someone linked me to a 4chan image that had expired. It redirected me to the video game part of 4chan, and I happened to read a thread.

Never again.

Also, I managed to get a no death clear of Ninja Gaiden (nes)

Managed to no damage Jaquio. Very happy about that. Also kept the cut scenes in and did a bit of annotation commentary for strategy (bit distracting, so turn it off if you just want to see the game).

*edit* Oh wow that text is small on forum player lol
