Painwheel Cerebella

So I got my new stick, which has made doing FG motions much easier. So this is what I will do for my first day.

-Practice snapbacks
-Practice blocking mix-ups

Not much else to say

After training:
My obsession with this game since this summer has shown. In tutorial I pretty much know everything they are talking about. I figured out in blocking mix ups its better just to block low and only block high when you see an enemy jump or do an overhead. I am currently really stuck on practicing Mix up offense and air combos (or combos in general). My main issue I must tackle is delaying inputs for special, non-normal moves. For example, I need to get used to inputting in a way where I do the motion THEN press the button. My experience in platformers and very precision demanding games got me used to pressing the end of a motion and a button at the same exact time. I see this does not work in FGs, at least not this game.

For example, I have problems following up Parasoul's c.LK and c.MK with a s.HK overhead due to the extra back motion that is required quickly but still have to delay the button press. Same with my difficulty with the Filia air combo in tutorial, I have problem jumping around the inputs so fast, not to mention some dropped frames (I think, maybe my eyes?) due to the letters and craziness. My main problem though is simply not being able to hairball in the air and truly follow up with a Gregor. I also found myself tense doing combos, and I can only imagine gradually overtime I won't tense up. I generally only get heated at video games when I play competitively with close friends, but I was getting frustrated not being able to ease myself during combos and whatnot. I am willing to work hard to be a good player, and this is not the first time I have done painstaking tasks in video games that require extreme patience and time. Tomorrow I will try to work on delaying my inputs so they read and will likely be in training mode for many hours since I only have one class.

So today I worked on mainly air combos through the tutorial mode. The main problem is simply practicing and make sure my fingers stay lined up with the buttons on my stick. I figured out the s.HK overhead for Parasoul in one of the lessons could be performed by simply holding back. My difficulty right now is performing OTG in the lesson where they are introduced. I am trying to learn Cerebella before Painwheel due to some tips from my friends. Apparently my team isn't so great, so I will learn Bella first before Painwheel because people say Bella is better or at least easier to use. Tomorrow I am going to practice tutorial more and practice movement with Cerebella and Painwheel. I am mainly going to work on confirming basic combos in tutorial.

So today I wasn't able to practice as much but it was definitely around 1.5-2 hours of training. Due to being bored by the air dash combo, I decided to spend most of today practicing movement of Painwheel and Cerebella as well as some basic combos I learned that both do around 4-5k when I can pull them off. I found the air dash combos frustrating not only cause they were short but also seemed to require weird finger placements. Like I would have to air dash with LP and MP but hit LK afterwards after some other inputs that naturally put my fingers on near the Heavy buttons. I will hoefully get to practice tomorrow and more patience with air dash combos.

Yesterday, I completed tutorial mode, which is a good first step. I also practicing some fighting with a friend. Obviously he pummeled me but the idea is to just get used to fighting and get better. I practiced the two basic chains I know for PW and Bella and I played Arcade mode on sleepwalk. The computer acts a bit random and doesn't play like a real person, but I see it as practicing on a moving target than anything and it serves as a way to get used to movement and doing some basic chains before I get to actually getting better with my combos. I will be playing a lot today but I don't know what I will do.

So today I spent most of the time with Painwheel practicing my garbage chains. Not too much to say here other than exploring more of my chains and now with Chrono_Tata's help I now have a combo that I can practice now. I also getting used to movement such as canceling out of buer into fly as well as doing a few in air buers on Big Band. Tomorrow (technically today) after I do my homework I will start working out that combo that Chrono_Tata gave me. Knowing me, it will likely take a while before I can reach doing it successfully 50%. A while means a LONG time. Even my little chains I mess up pretty regularly still. It's all in the name of wanting to be the best though, eventually I should say.

So today I actually didn't practice as much as I should have for a holiday here in the USA. I started working on the Chrono_Tata combo and am starting with c.LK c.MK s.HP xx Fly > j.LK c.MK . I have a major problem with going from j.LK to c.MK. Hard to tell if I just have shitty timing though since I still have major problems canceling out st.HP. Either way the only I have been able to do this short part of the combo almost was adding c.LK before the last c.MK. I practiced an hour today or maybe a bit more, I honestly don't remember. I will be practicing tomorrow but I got homework so I have complete that. As you can see, I have long way to go before becoming some type of expert. One step at a time though. I played with the music on, which felt a little strange because it took away some of the training vibe away to a more "you are playing for real" vibe.

Now for life drama related to SG. If you guys didn't know my new eightarc fusion synthesis stick was bought with some of my college money for food and stuff behind my parents back. Anyway, I did it cause I REALLY wanted to finally play SG and I was pretty much born for stick. Anyway they found and got mad or whatever. I tried to cover my ass by saying I wasn't going to ask anything for Xmas. I was going to ask to start gather parts to get a gaming PC, but that is on official hold not that it's that important cause I can play SG now, the main reason I wanted a new PC. Anyway, by some miracle they are letting keep the stick I bought behind their back cause I knew they wouldn't let me get one otherwise. However, my parents are very anti-video games cause I am introvert and they see my niche interests (video games, collecting vinyl records, rock music, classical music) as keeping me from making friends at college. They don't want me playing video games when I am 30, as if that is a bad thing. It now has me on the edge with them cause they think I am obsessed with games now since I have shown I am extremely annoyed not having my goddamn 3DS with me to play Pokemon X & Y, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and soon to be released Senran Kagura Burst. So yeah, I was real close to not being able to play SG anymore cause of losing my new arcade stick, so I dodged a bullet there. The other thing, they know the only thing I spend almost all my money on in college is food. That an occasional cheap ticket to see some underground band. Ok, drama over.

Honestly, if you're having too much trouble learning Chrono_Tata's combo, I'd say forget it for now and either learn another combo or only learn the first part of the combo. Glancing at the combo in question in the Painwheel forum, it's probably too early for you to be learning such a combo. Your first combo really only needs to serve the purpose of getting you accustomed to converting the hits you land on opponents into a combo. The more comfortable you are with the combo, the better. Later on when you are more comfortable doing this and with Painwheel in general, you can come back and try to gradually learn this combo in parts.

On the matter of your troubles with jLK > cMK, the timing probably is a little tight for someone just starting out. Going straight into cMK makes the damage of the combo scale less but also, makes the timing more strict because Medium moves take longer to come out than light moves usually. Adding in a c.LK after the j.LK like you did scales down the damage of the combo but makes the timing easier on you. I'd recommend starting off with adding the c.LK and then when you start getting an idea of the timing by doing c.LK, try learning how to go straight to c.MK.

As for the personal note, I can see why your parents are concerned but in reality, fighting games are a pretty good place to socialize. Local communities tend to form much more easily than other genre of games because of how desirable it is for competitive gamers. When you're ready, you might consider going to a local meetup one day. Until then, feel free to socialize here on Skullheart and in the IRC chat. No need to be shy in our community.

RurouniLoneWolf, I am taking everything said both strategy wise and personal wise in account. I actually am in the DMV area but I am in the DC city limits so there no arcades and I use the metro subway to get around. As for the combo, I am adding the extra c.LK for now.

Today was a really fun day. All I did was practice the first part of the combo that I was trying before while I had to keep talking on the phone with my family. I can at this point complete that first part of the combo sometimes but more importantly I am usually very close to doing it when I can remember to cancel out of st.HP. I feel that will be my main challenge in a couple of days. I also played my Bella a little using both the tutorial and the start of a combo kenz showed me in our training sessions. There is always a thread on here with the chart when I feel I want to expand it. I didn't do much today, hell, I don't think I played as much because of the phone calls. Despite that I feel REALLY good cause at this point I can at least do a start of a combo sometimes and I feel like I actually am improving. It's only a matter of time till I get a true grasp of at least basic play. I don't know, but my scrubby ass feels very proud at the progress I am making so far.

This has nothing to do with my training, but I thought it was funny.

Yeah, connecting j.LK to c.MK is a little bit tricky when you are starting off. Like Rurouni said, you could go ahead and skip out the part and try to replace it with things you are more comfortable with doing. My combo was also based on another combo that I took and replaced the parts that I didn't like doing with things that I found more comfortable. :P

Having said that, I think knowing how to fly cancel into j.LK/j.LP into c.HK is a really important component of Painwheel's combo so it's a good idea to learn it. The idea is that you have to do the jumping light move as close to the floor as possible so that you can link it into c.MK. The trick that works for me is, when you input QCB to do fly, just keep rotating the stick that way until you end up at forward-down. Once your stick is there, just go ahead and input LK and then MK. PW should be in the correct position to link j.LK into c.MK. If you are finding that PW is still a bit too high off the ground, try adjusting the speed of your rotation. Once you have the right feeling down, you should be able to do it consistently. Good luck!

Edit: Oh yeah, adding the c.LK before it does make it a lot easier, but the reason I didn't put it in is because I start another ground chain with LK, so obviously that would trigger IPS.

Today was a very annoying/good day for training. I go to train a lot today because tomorrow I only have one class. So today I continued to practice Painwheel start for the Chrono_Tata combo. I figured out that if I immediate down forward on the joystick during j.LK I am able to combo into c.MK pretty easily. However, this makes it harder to do the Light Buer afterwords while staying in combo. I think I literally did once the entire time. If I isolate the parts of the starter they are easy for the most part but combining them is hard. That was the annoying part about today cause I figured out what to do to do it correctly but I still can't do it. I mean I still have problems canceling st.HP.

The good part of today was that I was able to fight someone I have been talking to. I wasn't able to do any combos in battle but it still was nice trying to get rid of the nerves of fighting and getting used to actually using what I learned in tutorial and training mode. I am not going to give his/her name since I didn't ask his/her permission but it went very well. It was nice playing someone on a similiar level than me. The last thing is I might consider picking up Double as the third character. They reasons I have been reluctant to pick her up is

1. Waiting to see if any of the other DLC characters will take the third spot
2. I LOVE Double. I love her shapeshifting and her voice is amazing. She is just a general badass. She is a bad guy and defintitely a bitch, which actually makes me sort of against using her oddly enough. This is obviously not strategy and just me liking the story.
3. Everyone uses fucking Double. When I say that I know lot everyone uses her but she is arguably the most popular character on 3 man teams due to her Hornet Bomber and being a bit easier to pick up the basics.

However, trying out Double a little today, nothing serious just some button mashing, has really made me consider to pick her up. Yes, Double always looks cool but she actually seems really FUN to play as. Her interesting rhythm is just looks but feel too. I still have to think about it, but Double is now on the table. *sigh* If only Aeon won the indiegogo campaign this wouldn't even be a debate. Sadly though, it will take a long time for Lab Zero to get all of the cool possible playable characters and they may need to do more donation campaigns. Despite frustration over the Painwheel combo, I feel today was good in terms of learning shit. I posted a picture of Double as Mrs. Victoria on Steam screenshots today if you want to check that out.

I was also able to win a match using Bella's Showstopper "HERE WE GO!!", not going to lie it felt hype.

I also reached 24 hours of in game time today.

Swaggityswag, today was actually fun. However, today was probably fun more because I played people in lobbies more than working on that PW combo. I did put in a good amount of work on that PW combo don't get me wrong though. So yeah I spent most of my time in newbie lobbies today. I met a guy who had a much better squigly than either my PW or bella. What was interesting was I was still able to win a good number of matches against him. I hope we can fight again sometime, I felt I learned a lot about trying to stay smart in battle. I still got to learn this first part of this combo for PW but its taking forever. Man, I wonder how long will I need to practice this...

So Friday I wasn't able to play due to going to Black Cat in DC to listen to this folk band named Kindlewood. Today I made up for that by playing a lot. I am getting a hang of doing the first part of the PW combo, but over time in a session I actually get WORSE which is weird. The other problem is I found a 6949 combo for Bella and I realized I could practice that for two days and get that down. It annoys the SHIT out of me that not only I can play Bella better than PW and I haven't even practiced that much with her, but I now have a decent combo I could get down at this point when I still can't do the beginning of the PW combo. It's so annoying, like its like they made Bella easier to use or something. Most of my time today was in lobbies though since a little bird told me I need to start practicing with real people to truly get better, not just stay in training. I already know I can't use my combos in a real match, so I am stuck with neutral game in a game that is combo-heavy. I met SoupySwan today in lobbies, which was actually sort of cool. I also met a guy who has been playing SG since it first was released on Playstation 3 which is cool. I think his name was JMD! . I played a lot and I don't know if I'm getting better, but I will keep trying to get better. I don't get mad when I lose since its basically every match, so that helps me a lot in sticking with getting better. I do get nervous and sometimes wonder how I will be able to actually do my combos, especially PW, in battle. I mean, PW moves so fast. I might go back into to training mode before i go to bed today.

Okay, today was shaping up to do be a shitty day of training. I only practiced like 10 minutes yesterday so I didn't lose the feel and I struggled with my PW starter thing. I even asked someone out desperation for help, though it was really just to get stuff off my chest. After about 40 minutes of seemingly no progress on my PW combo I decided to go to lobbies. There, I fought other people around my level but it didn't feel any different from normal.

Then it happened.

I made my own 2 slot lobby with the the title "I want to improve!". What transpired after that was absolutely magic. Two players who were light years better than me took the time to play with me and try to show me new things. There was SO many things I improved on just a tiny bit such as tagging and doing that bella combo. I was so insightful and they didn't even talk to me, we just said GG to each other afterwards. I felt like even though I am a scrub I improved a lot, like a few things just seem to click better now. I am going to do that for now on. Someone even said I had a solid PW! Yes, the Painwheel that still can't do a combo in battle (well I can almost do a little of it, sorta). I know my ass is still a scrub and scum but I felt really good about how I did today. Hopefully this means that I can continue to get better. EVO here I come! #sendscrubbytoEVO Ok, maybe that's a little far right now...

EDIT: So I did go back into lobbies and ultimately I had to play this game like, 4-6 hours today. I have a LOT to learn, including doing combos consistently (in the case of PW, doing the little starter at all) but I think I am starting to understand the importance of actual fighting experience.

So yesterday was just me practicing my PW combo (or start of a combo), getting annoyed at first I am still practicing this thing and having inconsistent execution then getting in the zone. I fought this guy in 4 matches. That's honestly about it nothing much to say. I'll probably practice the PW combo again today. *sigh*

Yo but seriously does anyone read this thing? I'm keeping it mainly for myself obviously but damn, sometimes I be feeling a little lonely...

I read it, I just don't post since I'm a pretty low-tier Painwheel player and most of my advice probably isn't worth much.
The one piece of advice I can give you is to not be so down on yourself for struggling with Painwheel's combos, since her execution is arguably the hardest in the game. I spent way too much time learning Krackatoa's old 10-11k corner until eventually it just clicked. Keep practicing and your muscle memory will get to the point where you don't even consciously flight cancel.

Wow thanks for the encouragement man. It actually does motivate me.

So yeah I just practiced for an hour and the PW starter is starting to click. I am starting to do it more often now in training and I don't tense up as much when I do it. Still need to get better, but its all starting to come together. Also spent some time training with a friend. The main thing I will try to implement in my Bella game is concho and grab bag throw. I also need to practice my blocking in battle more. Hopefully I'll eventually have the PW starter combo down pack enough to use in matches and move on to the next phase of my combo. That will probably will still be awhile tho.

So I did another 30 minutes of PW grinding trying to get that 7 hit starter and then proceeded get my ass badly handed to me by the better players in the community. I mainly used the matches as a way to practice blocking cause there was no way I could touch these guys. My bella combo was also garbage today for some reason. I honestly might be cause I'm tired.

EDIT: Finished playing against a sparing partner. I did better, but he wasn't feeling well so I don't know if that says all that much. I was able to do a piece of the starter pretty consistently in battle and was able to do my bella combo for the most part.

.

Since you're starting to spend time in real matches, now might be a good time to get in the habit of trying to identify why you're losing matches. Right now, you're shrugging off your losses as simply not being as good as the other player but you can get more out of your matches by identifying reasons you lost and things you need to work on. Just something you might gradually want to start working on. It might be hard for you to do since you're just starting out. Alternatively, you can take videos of your matches and ask someone to critique them later.

A good thing I tried once is go into training mode and ask someone to combo you while you try to solely defend. That way you can focus solely on defense, predicting resets and more.
I think I played you for a match last night. I was Will Drop for Diamonds

I will take note of that starting today. I know in general I suck at reading cross ups and I have problems with mix up offense from Fortune and Squigly. I generally know to block high on Filia players before going low, cause even the good ones seem to always use overheads first before going high low game. I am particularly bad against Fortune, Val, and Squigly on a character level.

I generally know to block high on Filia players before going low, cause even the good ones seem to always use overheads first before going high low game.
Just wait until you play someone who puts IAD airthrow whiff into their mixups.

My lack of knowledge of combos, affectively getting on Squigly, and just generally blocking Squigly's mix up offense killed me today. The guy said I need to work on my combos, because with combos I am less likely to get in trouble. Which is what I've been doing obviously but more importantly, I was horrible at combos today. In training mode and out I couldn't do my PW starter. My Bella combo I would always mess up and do concho on the second launcher. Yesterday, was a garbage day and I only have myself to blame.

How do you do concho anyway? It's like the most awkward thing in existence, other than the godlike execution of PW combos.

Ok, seriously WTF. I can do the PW starter way more on the left corner than the right corner, though overall I have less of a grip/strong control of my stick on the left corner. I got beat 22 times in a row today against someone who despite being better than me I feel is not totally unreachable for me at this point. It's the same old thing I need to work on, besides trying to predict overhead or low when in the air I still need to get better at combos. That and being able to get in on people and really hit confirm. I also for some reason couldn't punish this guy for the life of me. I don't know what I did wrong there. He had Parasoul/Filia so there was lots of updo and pillar, with pillar being the much bigger problem. How will I be able to address these problems remains to be seen. Combos obviously require daily practice, but how much is anyone's guess. 30 minutes, 2 hours? How could I learn to be able to hit confirm people to. Hmmm...

It's not uncommon to be able to have better execution on 1P or 2P side when you first start. When you get more comfortable with your combo, feel free to start practicing it on both sides.

Practicing a combo for X amount of time per day or practice the combo until you can get it Y times in a row are also common training habits. My thoughts on both is that it's really up to you. Invest as much time as you feel you should/can. Random combo tip, I'd like to emphasize that when you practice your combos, if you're finding that a particular part is giving you trouble, it's better to practice just that part until you become comfortable with it instead of the whole combo. Try your best to figure out why it isn't working.

As for hit confirming, depends on what you mean. If you're talking about whether to go for a blockstring or a combo depending on whether your opponent blocks or gets hit, you can set the training dummy to block at random to practice this.

Thanks again RurouniLoneWolf, you always have good advise. I guess I'll just use the 30 minute rule for now, practice PW combo for 30 minutes at least though knowing me I will usually go longer. I tend to go back to SG more than once a day. So I had a lot of fun getting distracted by my homework and playing in a Queen of the Hill lobby. Today was an example of me getting better. I am starting to use concho, if subconsciously. I also was able to beat people who were clearly better than me and the fact that they were actually CAREFUL around instead of the usual "go in on this scrub and blow him up" means something. Waking up at 19:00, I don't know if I will play SG again later to practice PW today. Of course I still need to learn the PW starter, but my overall play is improving. I still have problems against certain characters like Filia but I feel I am starting to get better at approaching and predicting if they will go high or low on offense.

One thing I want to point is this.

I was watching this I really feel that I could learn from what was going on. The mistakes each side made, the risks they made, and the tatics they were using.

So today was practice PW like usual even though most of it was talking to this dude. Then I had a long practice session some buddies including a Bella I simply couldn't beat. The player didn't play SG all that much but had FG experience. I guess the main thing was pushblocking so he wouldn't command grab. Also there was not getting caught in a combo and trying to actual capitalize on a c.lk into a combo. Other than that I felt like I am continuing to learn. I am glad I feel like I am improving.

Hi! Saw your name and thought I recognized it.
GG's. We played a long time.

So I noticed today I am able to perform the starter more if I keep in a down position while going from c.mk to light buer. Sounds obvious but I was going to neutral on the stick thinking it would read my movement better. I still tense up A LOT, practicing this combo, which messes me up. I find when I am not tense I am MUCH more likely to complete the starter. I still occasionally seem to muscle forget air cancel and won't be able to do it for 12 attempts before I get it back.

Also learned that lotion messes up your fucking Sanwa joystick. Which fucking sucks cause now the surface is all stupid. As you know the ball is clear but its no longer smooth and is cracked. I don't know how to replace the part, so any help would be appreciated. It's Sanwa, so I don't know what to say.

Today was sort of a normal fight and training to get better sort of day. Seriously though someone help me on why lotion made my ball crack.

To replace the ball top. Just order a new one online. Google "sanwa ball top" and you will see a bunch of stores that sell them. Just make sure that you buy the correct size for you. They do sell larger and smaller balls. You could go with ball top if you want.

To actually swap the top watch this. Go forward to 3:05 :
Don't unmount the whole joystick. Just do what he did to remove the top.

SWAG. (thank you poverty stream crew for making me use this word as a joke now)

I am really getting a hang of my PW starter now. Not enough for battle yet, but I am doing it consistantly at this point on each side. The thing I said about not putting the stick back at neutral is really working now. I feel so proud right now!

LATER:
I finished my game today and I messed around with quick match, which I don't want to do too much because I heard Hops say once he got better because there wasn't anyone to play quick match on 360. So instead, I am going the route others told me and I am spending a little time in training every day, 15-60 minutes, and I am facing people I know. I still feel I need to get better. I also had my normal lobby matches with people I know on Steam. I need to get better. I will be back in Orlando tomorrow.

PLEASE LET MY PARENTS NOT TAKE AWAY MY ARCADE STICK AND KEEP IT FOR TWO WEEKS WHEN I GET BACK TO HOWARD U.

I also got my ass beat by MegamanDS.

So um, I forgot my charger in DC, and my laptop has become very dependent on having a charger. I have extra ones around in my house in Orlando, where I am now, by luck. However, they are all around 60W when you should have 90W+. I have my screen brightness pretty low and don't know how effective my training will be over the next 4 days. So I am going to see if this things runs out of power as fast as I think it will.

Wait DC you say, as in district of columbia?

Yep, I go to Howard U. Right now I am in Orlando, Florida at my house.

So it seems as if while not as fast as my other charger, it will work and keep the power at 100% if I just let it get ready. So it took me a bit to get used to sitting on a couch instead of a very specific wooden chair in my dorm at Howard. I am starting to be able to use my starter and battle and I will mix it up so I can make it go a little longer and in case it drops like it usually does. One of my online practice partners is improving a lot, so thats really cool to see and good motivation. Today I remembered a bunch of counters to Filia and also may need to start figuring out ways to extend my combos after I get really good at them.

One thing that has got me hyped is this documentary series that is really good and shows the culture and community of one of the most interesting competitive scenes. This has motivated me to really keep trying to get better. I want to be as good at this game as humanly possible and while I know it takes patience and hard work, I am willing to put in the hours and hard work (if my parents don't stop me, which they very might try).

So my parents, in all their infinite wisdom, said I can't take back my eightarc stick to college. That leaves two weeks of no SG and no practice. I can't say how mad I am right now cause its the same bullshit my parents always pull, trying to restrict what are my interests like they are wrong or some shit. It annoys me SO MUCH. Since I will likely lose all the skill acquired not playing that long, what should I do?

Consider learning to play on keyboard.

Also, I see your team is PW/Bella, so you should use excelebella assist since it covers the air and that's where you shoud be with PW. It also gives you a full combo and rubs on your opponent's face that he was hit for some good four seconds.

NOOO I enjoy playing with you

If it's just two weeks, I wouldn't sweat it. Just watch some combo vids for a while. Sometimes breaks help people improve. If you're losing your stick longterm... keyboards are nice.

So Thursday and today I didn't do any training, I just went straight to Lobbies. I honestly think it's time to extend my combo because I am able to do them pretty well with people on my level now. I didn't play yesterday cause I was tired. Not much to say other than random matches actually seem to dull my attentiveness lol. I still am really bad against Squigly and Val. I feel i am really upping my game, which makes me mad cause now I won't have my stick for two weeks. Since I won't have my stick and I decided it would just be easier to wait the two weeks, I'll just make funny videos. So everyday for two weeks I am going to be making videos for the 240p SG crew referencing various jokes on Poverty Stream. I sorta shy and will only act flamboyant if I don't take you seriously, so these videos are not what I am exactly like day to day lol.
