I'm also a little annoyed at this announcement being on the Skullgirls twitter just before CEOtaku. If anything, it'll cannibalize potential entrants because they'll just be like, "Oh, that's just the first stop on the tour" when CEOtaku is easily the second-biggest tournament we have. I get that Combo Breaker is the biggest tournament so far this year, but surely you can see the potential effects of such an announcement.
CEOtaku last year had 52 entrants. That was the 4th biggest tournament for the game of 2015, behind NEC, EVO, and Combo Breaker. There are a lot of people who were making NEC every year that are now shipping out to GUTS as well, so I'm not quite sure if it'll be CEOtaku or GUTS that'll be the second biggest SG event of 2016.
That aside, I don't think this is doing anything to deter anyone from going. There are like 5 events on the calendar, and I think if someone would say to themselves "Wow, I really want to see what this Skullgirls is about, but I see that CEOtaku is first on the list so I'm not going", those are the same people that say "Wow, I really want to play Skullgirls, but the game keeps changing so I'm going to wait until it's all over to play." Haven't we realized that the people who would say that are never going to be a part of the community anyway, so there's no point wasting effort trying to appease them?
Finally, both of those things aside, these events are for us. While, yeah, focusing on events and doing things like calling it a "Skullgirls Tour" adds flair and excitement for potential spectators and newcomers, that's not the reason we started focusing attendance. We started because we were tired of being shuffled into corners, and we wanted a place to play and enjoy ourselves with each other. Everyone in the SGC has heard how great CEOtaku 2015 was, and anyone in the community who isn't making it is only not making it because they are literally incapable of doing so (or because they can't make both CEOtaku and GUTS). Aren't we already getting everything we could have hoped for as far as CEOtaku goes (and all these events, really)? I would be deeply saddened if something as simple as placement on a list made any divide between us during what is supposed to be bringing us all together.
