That's hostly my theory too, it acts like a parasite and skeletal themed ones aren't completely out of the question. (Sekhmet) I just think it's a really really powerful one.
Yeah I agree, the Skull Heart even replaces a part of the Host's body like other Parasites do. Samson replaces Filia's hair, Leviathan replaces part of Squigly's brain, Sekhmet replaces Eliza's skeleton, and the Skull Heart replaces Marie's heart.

Speaking of Parasites, I think it would be useful if the differences between Normal and Synthetic Parasites were specified in the Canon Info Thread. Remote Parasites are pretty clear though.
I'm not even sure if Synthetic Parasites are even technically alive. I mean, from what I've seen of them so far they seem more like prosthetics than sentient organisms. This is made even more apparent by the fact that most of them look mechanical. Avery is the sole exception to this but I think that the little bird is just a projection of Peacock's mind, like Andy Anvil or Tommy Ten-Tons. I'm willing to bet that the actual Avery System is like the Argus System, just a mechanical attachment in her head or something.

I bet Peacock just takes crap from everyone's rooms in the Lab.
Aww yis.
