Sakurai confirms Ice Climbers are out because 3DS was too weak, and they even had a working IC prototype on Wii U. UGH

Dammit if they can only get certain characters to work just fine on one system but not the other, then they probably should have just made the game for the one system.

Ice Climbers wouldn't be Ice Climbers if Nana/Popo wasn't, to at least some extent, partially controlled by the AI. The whole point to their character is that he/she is a puppet character that mimics your moves. The difference between ICs and someone like Rosalina is that the secondary character is an AI controlled entity that responds to player input.

Even if having one IC on stage isn't too big a deal, I'm sure that having four ICs on stage at the same time becomes rather process intensive even for a game like this (especially for something that needs to work consistently over local wireless play and wifi). They probably put a decent amount of time into trying to get them to work and brainstorming ways they could potentially implement them. It's likely that they didn't want to change the core mechanics of the ICs but also couldn't get them to work the way they are, forcing them to make a decision as to whether or not they should drop ICs or give them more development time.

Either that, or Sakurai is a big fat liar. Who knows. Either way, I wouldn't doubt his explanation. It makes perfect sense at this point.
 
I can't imagine 4 IC's playing on 3DS at the same time would be all that swell.

ICs speculated to be future DLC.....

It's legit. The game is already pushing the 3DS to the full extent that the hardware is capable of, and the sacrifices the team have made are noticeable (See: No miiverse except on New 3DS). This is the most glaring and unfortunate omission however.

How ironic that the first HD smash is held back by hardware which can't do what was already achieved over a decade ago.

Great, got it sorted except I do not know how to crop the image so that I just get the roster and not the other stuff captured in the screen cap.
