Fighting games are the only video game genre truly worth investing in because of a heap of side benefits you get outside of just playing them, like discipline, friends, community, and travel.
I have to disagree.
Ultimately if you want to be social about something it's
completely on you. In fighters you could easily be a basement dweller online warrior, go to in person tournaments and make a name for yourself, but than never talk to anyone there and just go back to basement dwelling when you get home. On the other side of the coin, if you have the initiative you can pretty much form a community for anything you want, and be social about that.
I mean hell, how social the
speed run community is at live events really blows my mind at times.
Not to mention this post assumes you don't already have friends and community outside your game of choice taking up your time, in which case it's not really a "benefit" since you have it already.
Also judging the games as being "worth time" based on something that's not actually a part of the game (community).
Furthermore "worth investing time in" and "casual fun" are completely subjective. Some people don't like competition at all. And some people don't care about being social and prefer games as a time of solitude and relaxation. And some people are very invested in things that are not skill based aka "casual".
Other competitive genres ain't got shit(except money lol) on fighting games either, since they promote basement-dwelling as the prime method of competition, and in my experience RTS/FPS/MOBA tournaments are far less social, and much more hostile than fighting game tournaments.
Don't really see how they "promote" basement dwelling. Starcraft and Quake lan parties have been a thing since forever. Also your experience is just that: Your singular experience of a few tournaments in a genre that spans a massive number of games and communities world wide.
Anything competitive demands this. Fighting games didn't invent discipline, nor are they they only form of electronic entertainment that demands it to defeat other disciplined players.
On a side note, I'd really like to hear you say that Starcraft is just casual fun in front of one of those Korean tourney pro's lol.
Also not electronic but Chess is
totally for casuals.
There is a grain of truth in what you're saying, fighting games are probably one of the better if not the best games for a social environment, but to act like other games are incapable of having a social aspect or are not worth spending time on due to being less social is not something I can agree with.
`Phil Fish's only problem was that he ran his mouth too much, and I sincerely wish FEZ II was still being developed.
Phew.
The way I heard it, Phil Fish's problem was that he basically
wasn't the guy who made Fez, or at least didn't do the majority of the work. His partner (who he fired after Fez was finished) basically did all the hard stuff, and without him Phil was in over his head and was basically just looking for an excuse to cancel Fez II.
At least that's how it was explained to me. Seems reasonable since I have a hard time believing that man is even semi competent at game design or programming.
