Unpopular gaming opinions

I dislike Zelda in general, with the exception of the first two games. Those felt like legitimate adventure games to me.

I'll make it quick and painless.

- If it's about zombies, then you've already lost me. They're overused and mostly just end up being and excuse for lazy writing. You don't need zombies or the apocalypses to make hard choices, you just need good characters and stories.
Eh.
I can't say I'm not tired of zombies (pretty much everyone is) but I'm not about to write off games specifically for using them. I still believe that zombies can be a good tool for stories, I just wish we would only use them as a good tool for stories instead of a crappy enemy macguffin.

Games I like that everyone else dis-the-likes:
Wind Waker
Fighters in general (It's only when MK is brought that I see a reaction, then it turns back to Fatality swooning)
Metal Gear Rising (Yet to have met someone in person that has liked it.)
Elite Beat Agents (This is a sin I tell you!)
You have a strange definition of "dis-the-likes."

I'm not the biggest fan in the world of the franchise, but those two still hold up today imo.

Majora's Mask is probably my favorite game of all time in terms of story and atmosphere.

Zelda Oracle of Ages and Seasons probably have the best dungeon design in any 2d game IMO.

Those happen to be a few in the series I haven't played. After trying OoT and stopping half way through and quitting Twilight Princess an hour in from boredom I haven't been trying too many Zelda games. Link to the Past felt very meh, as well as Four Swords and Minish Cap.

never owned a ps3 or 360, never plan too, and next gen is outta the question

Definitely try them.

It's worth noting though that Twilight Princess, despite being a very good game, has an infamous early game. Even when it gets good (after the intro), you don't hit the real good stuff till like 3 dungeons in.

Link to The Past is kind of a transitory phase for the series, kind of between the free style exploration of the two nes games and the more linear guided progression of the later games.

4 swords is amazing co op though.

Bought a PS3 to play a PS2 game. However it turns out to be worth it for a variety of exclusive games.

Bought a 360 just to import shmups lol.

Now there's a real "unpopular gaming opinion".

I honestly think Zelda 2 was amazing. Probably one of my favorite games. It being "different" is not a legitimate criticism.

I hate Zelda. Too boring for me, and the only zombie games I'll lay a finger on is LFD2 and House of The Dead.

Also, MK is kinda over rated...

-Bioshock Infinite is one of the most inconstant games I have played. It's the gaming equivalent to Oscar bait. There are a lot of signs of laziness by the developers throughout the game. When an independently made dating sim can have more emotional depth and complexity then a AAA multimillion game, then some focus was lost at one point.
Thank you! I was also incredibly disappointed with Infinite. The story and characters seemed lazy and never connected with me - I didn't even like the Lutece twins. The art design and skyhook mechanics were okay, but the story was so lame that it ruined everything for me.

Majora's Mask is probably my favorite game of all time in terms of story and atmosphere.

I don't know if I can say that Majora's Mask is my favorite game ever, but certainly the best Zelda. Ages and Seasons are probably my favorite 2D Zeldas too, you have good taste ;)

i honestly think the 360 pad is not bad. i honestly think people overreact about its d-pad and what not, but i still prefer my DS3 and my imaginary fight stick over it.

I actually like random encounters in games. I'm probably the only one who thinks so (aside from the devs making them), but I feel people hate on them way to much

I think the problem with random encounters is that later on in the game they feel less like an exciting mechanic and more like an obstacle to waste your time. "Gotta go fight that boss! Just a few more ste-- oh look, a horde of slimes....fuckin'..."

The bad part of random encounters is usually a result of sloppy level design. You need to control where and how often random battles occur very precisely if you don't want to fuck up the pacing. If you just make every tile of your dungeon have a 10% chance of monsters and leave it at that you've already made a shitty dungeon. It's a good suspense tool if you work with it, you just have to minimize the amount of aggravation it causes.

That, and the inherent advantage of random encounters is that it works well with the "simulation" aspect of classic rpg's. Not knowing where and when you'll encounter enemies, not being able to avoid them through manual input on the players side, etc.

Also speaking of dungeons

I like the new DP nerfs.

I still don't like medium punches and kicks in fighters, regardless off what options I get from it.

Would something like this in reverse reduce the annoyances of random encounters for some people? When you actually get a random battle, it decreases your chances later on

I feel like most 6 button fighters are in cahoots with arcade stick companies, same with fighters that have awkward combinations for pads

I fucking hate weird or long inputs on moves. Looking at you SNK.
The perfect fighter for me would use quarter circles and dp's with their respective reversed versions for at least 90% of attacks.
Half circles are also acceptable although I still don't like them that much. Full circles are eh, I usually avoid characters that use them a lot but they don't automatically make me hate them.
Double quarter circles are getting into bad territory. Double half circles are the beginning of the end. Pretzels make me vomit.
And then there's fucking snk which seems to thinks performing super motions should be similar to inputting a cheat code.

It would help to some degree.
The key, though, is to figure out where in the dungeon the random battles would be stupid and aggravating through basic behavioral psychology. So, for example, if you're currently doing a block pushing puzzle the area the puzzle is in shouldn't have any encounters because getting into an encounter while trying to solve the puzzle just because you were moving the blocks around is obnoxious, not challenging.
The part where random encounters really shine, imo, is when you're low on health and attempting to leave or get to a healing/save spot and you're terrified of having to fight anything. Just the existence of random battles makes the moment really tense and fills it with suspense without you having to script out anything at all.
I have to point out that all RNG's are pseudo-random, though, so the name of that dota mechanic is fucking stupid.

honestly inputs never bothered me because I never learned what was "hard" and what was "easy"
the first fighting game I actually learned inputs for was blazblue and it's got stuff like hcb, f for carnage scissors and pretzel for Hazama's IK and I did those just fine
meanwhile consistently doing DPs still eludes me

Going from Smash bros to Guilty gear was a huge wall for me but since I've adapted I find that I prefer my fighter inputs to be no more complicated than half-circles. (Screw 360/720/1080 inputs to the blackest pits of hell).

With that character input feels a bit more varied because they will utilize different input combinations instead of universal :QCB: + :QCB: + buttons for special and super inputs and not feel samey across the board. It also means that you can put more damaging moves under inputs like :HCB: + :F: + button to emphasize that they are more damaging moves (Potemkin Busta!!!)

Half circle and half circle backward, forward don't annoy me too much unless I have to use them in combos. Especially if you have to do it like 10 times in the same combo
Pretzels are vomit.
And my first real fighting game experiences were all platform fighters so when I picked up guilty gear x2 at age 11/12 or so I was trying to figure out why they don't just add a special button. Admittedly sometimes I still kind of wish all fighting games just had a special button.

(I'm using WASD for fighting games. Why change when I use this in every other game)
I have no issue with doing ASDASD for double half-circle motions, but DSADSA is a problem for me.

But I agree with @Horseman, if I would make a fighting games, most motions would use quarter circles, DPs or down-up/back-forward charge motions

Because 360/720s and TKs will be several times harder with that setup than if you switch up to space and hit it with either thumb.

- The majority of Zelda games are boring.

- The majority of Final Fantasy games are boring.

- The MOTHER series is SEVERELY slept on.

- Not into MGS at all and have literally no interest in it, I can see how its cool but I don't know.

- I don't like how Melee is hard on fucking accident, the game is a masterpiece but what the fuck.

- I hope Smash 4 replaces Melee as the main Smash game, like I said, Melee is fucking amazing but imo its time for a change.

- Skullgirls is one of the easiest if not the easiest fighting game to get competitively strong in.

- Street Fighter 3: Third Strike is the greatest video game of all time. Bar none.

- Super Mario Sunshine is the best 3-D mario. Sun>Galaxy>64 (Fuck Galaxy 2)

- Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is the best 3DS game easy.

- Most 3-D fighters are kinda whack imo except Tekken.

- Brawl would be a great game with a lot of thought and respect if Meta Knight (and maybe IC's) weren't in it.

- UMVC3 is good. A lot of fun, and its DIFFICULT too which a lot of people don't agree with for some fucking reason.

- Most if not all good NES games if not aged all that well. Mega Man 2 is fucking timeless though.

- The SNES has aged like wine.

- The N64 is weird, it has a very small pool of good games but those good games are fucking destructive.

- Fuck a PS2

- Most Dreamcast games suck

- Pokemon RBY are all pretty trash now.

- Yu-Gi-Oh GBA games are tight as fuck.

- CUSTOM ROBO ARENA FOR BEST DS GAME.

- Every Mario Kart thats not N64, DS, and 3DS fucking suck. SNES is aight.

Thats it for now

Or you could just BD it and leave the encountering up to the player. That seemed to work.

MOTHER isn't being slept on
it's over
Itoi has no interest in doing any more and Nintendo is respecting his wishes

- Skullgirls is one of the easiest if not the easiest fighting game to get competitively strong in.

I've heard this claim before, and whether it's applied to Skullgirls or some other fighter, it's not something I can agree with. Skullgirls does have very easy execution compared to many other fighters, but how easy execution is will never make a game "easier". With a competitive game, everyone is ultimately in the same boat execution wise, so how "easy" or "hard" it is to be competitive has to do with who you're playing and how much time your willing to put into improving your fundamentals IMO.

- Most if not all good NES games if not aged all that well. Mega Man 2 is fucking timeless though.

- The SNES has aged like wine.

I kinda wanna disagree with this, but I think you might actually be right. My SNES emulator (I actually have a huge collection of nes and snes carts but emulators are convenient and I don't feel like hooking the systems back up) see's far more use than my Nes emulator.

There are still classics on the Nes though like Contra and Super C, Life Force, Mario 3 (best Mario of all time still IMO), Batman, Zelda 1 and 2, Castlevania 3, Ninja Gaiden, The Guardian Legend (needs more love), etc.

The Nes also has a host of obscure import only games that are actually quite good that are now available to a wider audience thanks to emulation. Splatterhouse Wanpaku Grafitti, Recca, and Holy Diver (bullshit trial and error difficulty but a fun game none the less) come to mind.

- Fuck a PS2

I've probably gotten more play time out of ps2 + ps3 than anything else until I got into PC stuff.

I know that, I mean its being slept on in the sense that not enough people have played the games.

I get a sense that a lot of people have played Earthbound. The other two are a bit more understandable, though I think the hardcore have certainly gone through the trouble to at least english patch roms of Mother 3.

Lets see what else there is for me

*Goat Simulator is probably the best game that has been released this year
*Best update to an existing game this year goes to Euro Truck Simulator 2. Like, really, the new AI update is amazing!

1. Mario 64 was garbage, as someone who was not raised with it I found it horrible.
2. Majoras Mask is over rated and Skyward sword is the best Zelda. (I have never seen anyone say MM was bad and it was almost always their favorite)
3. Turn based battling is stale and boring. (Pokemon being the only exception I can think of)
4. Consoles are better than PC.
5. I never want to play a Final Fantasy game ever.
6. The first Zelda was awful.
7. Smite is my favorite MOBA.
8. Visual novels are not games.
9. Graphics are not a deciding point in buying a game.
10. I despise MvC3 (Not getting in to why because I am lazy)
11. I will never accept competitive smash as anything.
12. Brawl Minus is better than Brawl and Melee combined.

The Assassin's Creed series is immensely over rated and the first several games of the series are terrible up until Black Flag. Black Flag is actually not that bad and pretty good, but from 1 to the title just before Black Flag they were just not that good or interesting to me.

Kingdom Hearts sucks. I never want to look at that game, ever. And anyone who says they like it are automatically weaboos in my book.

Definitely wouldn't call it garbage, but you're not the only one who thinks it hasn't aged all that well.

That's not how you spell Shin Megami Tensei

111. I will never accept competitive smash as anything.

If you don't after watching Melee at Evo last year, your loss.

I really like the combat, really great oldschool hack and slash with some of the funnest boss fights around. Story went to shit after the first game though (went from a charming fairy tale that didn't take itself too seriously to your average jrpg Neon Genesis Wank fest), though the bosses got better with every game..

You know what else hasn't aged well? Sonic Adventure 2. I played it again on Steam and I felt like it lost a lot of it's charm... doesn't feel the same as it did on the Gamecube.
