Webtoon thread

Wasn't into the new art style but it's growing on me. Glad it kicked in in the nick of time for the "In A Moment's Time" scene, because that whole sequence was A+.

I guess this probably confirms that Irvin isn't medici. (at least in the webtoon)
And it also implies vitale has a life gem himself.

Oh yeah, I was already happy to see Big Band again, but when Irvin appeared, I had to scream in delight.

Okay, so the guy in question works for the crown. Sometimes. Adam's appearance, yay. Probably, the theory that Irvin is a Medici's son falls flat. But he still can be disguised as Regina, you know...

Peacock really is the star of the show. Her interior design abilities rival only the ones that The Fishbone Gang has. Wish they could join their forces, but it will never happen.

Also, I noticed that some of the Medici goons in the Casino look like Luke Atmey and Godot from "Ace Attorney". Or maybe I'm just delusional.

There are times were Vitale refers to Lorenzo by his name, but only in the third person (when he's talking about his father to someone else), but referring to his father by his name when directly talking to him is a bit weird.
As it turns out, Lorenzo calls Vitale by his name too... Is it to conceal the facts, so no-one would ask questions about Lorenzo's longevity?

Or maybe that's just the family quirk, you know...

Yeah, I liked how they had an Ottomo panel and then an Eli close-up in the vents to compare their similarities. Maybe eel-type Dagonians inspired Tom when creating the mech? I never thought of the two together before.
Makes me want to see Ottomo's origin story.

The previous chapter implies that there's some sort of connection between the Gang and Tom, considering the way they put him out of commission . We really need to know more about that.

You're not delusional, I think much like how the cleanup crew were apparently Lupin-themed, I think this set of goons were Ace Attorney-themed.

1678536308195.png I cropped out Luke Atmey but that looks like Apollo, Dick and Phoenix already on screen. I didn't notice anyone else, kinda surprised to not see Edgeworth (I do not think he's in the bag).

It's a fun quirk that I like seeing even if the connection isn't as immediately clear as seeing heist gang references in a plot about a gang pulling off a heist. Probs just cheeky for the sake of it, which I don't mind.

Oh, that's quite a great feature. I like that sort of "easter eggs".

But the colour of that costume kind of gives it away...

I noticed the coffee prosecutor Godot and a guy, who looks like Ryunosuke Naruhodo (but this one might be a stretch).

Seeing how they put credits at the bottom, is Episode 14 the end? Leave the gruesome and gorey consequences for the Fishbone Gang unsaid not shown?
If you haven't already seen it, there is a comment from the writer that putting the credits doesn't mean they are ending the series, they just want to give prop to the team members working on the comic.

I guess this probably confirms that Irvin isn't medici. (at least in the webtoon)
Yeah, I think it's not looking likely, although I wouldn't say it (de)confirms it. Even if he's working deep cover for the Medici, there's no reason he couldn't take jobs from the Renoirs. If anything, that's what someone under deep cover might do.

And it also implies vitale has a life gem himself.
Dunno about that either. Vitale looks significantly older than Lorenzo with the Life Gem. If he were using one, you'd think they would look around the same age. I think Vitale has something that is dear to him, and Lorenzo is threatening harm to it if he doesn't get his way.

As it turns out, Lorenzo calls Vitale by his name too... Is it to conceal the facts, so no-one would ask questions about Lorenzo's longevity?

Or maybe that's just the family quirk, you know...
I mean, it's not uncommon for a father to call his son by his name. Much less common the other way around though. Normally it shows disrespect, but in this case it could be Vitale trying to be "professional" and not using familial terms to refer to Lorenzo, who is also essentially his boss.

But he has referred to Lorenzo as Father in SGM, which was likely written by another writer. So it just seems to be a quirk with this particular writer.

The previous chapter implies that there's some sort of connection between the Gang and Tom, considering the way they put him out of commission . We really need to know more about that.
Idk. I think it's probably just a well-known fact that Tom is a drunk and could probably be distracted by alcohol.

On that note though, I think it was a bit weird that Ottomo was disabled essentially by taking out Tom. We were previously told that Ottomo has his own AI which is a completely different personality from Tom, and it's the AI that normally communicates with the Mafia bosses, since it's programmed to act like a butler. Even if Tom is taken out and Ottomo isn't physically controlled, the AI should still be functioning if the actual robot wasn't disabled.

Maybe the whole Ottomo being a separate AI thing has been changed, but it would just be weird if it's actually Tom who is doing Ottomo voices.

This time, it's not a hiatus for "two weeks", there's much more.

I really love this chapter. So many things happening simultaneously...

Dahlia making fun of Lorenzo? Check. Vitale being seemingly the only sane person in the room? Check. Eliza fabulously appearing? Triple check.

Really, this plot turn does make me wonder about Dahlia's next actions. Seems that she wasn't tasked with retrieving the Life Gem.

But we definitely know what Ottomo and Vitale are going to do next. Poor Filia.

The part with the Lab is amazing. Couldn't believe I will see Stanley in the webcomic so soon. And that picture of him with Andy is adorable...

Once again, it's interesting to find out what were the Lab and the Egrets doing during the Skullgirl's attack on Maplecrest.

Also, Molly is a freaking treasure to look at. Nice to see it being back, that's the most important part. Adam, Irvin and Stanley together in the same frame is a combo I couldn't dream of. And I really like the background characters in the Lab and the Medici Tower. Really brings some life in the comic.

It's 2x2 Weeks. Double the fun!

Assuming they want to get to the Fishbone Gang massacre at some point to bring Fortune's character in-line with how she appears in the game, they would need to run into each other sooner or later. Perhaps someone else finds the FIshbone Gang and Dahlia was put in charge of interrogating them.

But yeah, canonically Cerebella and Eliza being tasked with retrieving the Life Gem would happen after the Fishbone Gang were already killed, so the timeline is pretty out of whack compared to the canon one.

Once again, it's interesting to find out what were the Lab and the Egrets doing during the Skullgirl's attack on Maplecrest.
Well, interesting at least in the context of the Webtoon. I don't think Parasoul raiding the Labs happens in the canon timeline.

But yeah, I think it's cool to see the timeline moving at a different pace compared to the canon one and what alternately could happen, even if I feel the characterisations of certain characters are still a bit off compared to what we have been used to in the games.

In hindsight, there should have been an image of trolling Double and really angry Marie at the end of the chapter...

Indeed.
And another question is about Eliza. Vitale outright mentions that he pays her. Don't remember this happening in-game.

I feel like they could have leaned into the Two Weeks meme more but clearly the devs don't think it's as funny as I think it is. :P

Yeah, that is weird and I don't see why they thought they needed to change Eliza's motivation for having to help the Medici. However, it was also pointed out to me that it could be that Vitale is just saying that to hide Eliza's secret from the other Medici members. Either way, even if Vitale is paying her, Eliza isn't a gun-for-hire, and the fact she agreed to help them in the first place would likely mean there is more at stake for her than money, so I think the blackmailing aspect is still at play.

Same.

There was a scene in one of the earlier chapters with Lorenzo reading some reports about Eliza, so it's quite possible.
I hope they didn't change much of that particular part. Eliza shouldn't be tainted by changing her characterisation.

Yeah, it was just in a newspaper I think, about Eliza's blood drive. I think it's just a reference to that particular part of her lore for the eagle-eyed reader.

Yeahh. We've been told that both the SGM Main Story timeline and the Webtoon timelines are not canon, but I don't think it's a common knowledge that is known to most players. I wonder if there is a way SGM and/or the Webtoon could clarify that more.

Wasn't Ottomo ASG Lab tech Tom stole from the labs when he defected? Or was this changed?
Though I guess Tom could've made his own modifications, too.

Also, with that transition from Ottomo to Eli, I really thought they were gonna put Eli in Ottomo's suit.

Maybe the AI is simply for speech and mannerisms instead of major motor function or something, lol.

I forgot to point it out from a couple weeks ago, but the panel where Tom was swaddled up was undoubtedly an Eraserhead reference.

Yeah, pretty sure this is still true. We don't know if Ottomo was originally meant to be internally piloted, but if he did then Tom must have made some modifications so that someone his size could pilot it. He's definitely not a standard sized person, even as far as Dagonians go.

Also, with that transition from Ottomo to Eli, I really thought they were gonna put Eli in Ottomo's suit.
Lol would have been interesting but don't think Eli could fit in there.

Yeah, I think that is the intention. But like I said, if Ottomo's AI is responsible for talking then he could have alerted Lorenzo even if Tom is knocked out. I'll just assume that the Fishbone disabled him off-panel or something, for the sake of my sanity.

Oh, interesting. Can you point out which scene in particular? I've never seen the movie but I should check it out.

You had probably just better watch Eraserhead yourself. But specifically, Tom swaddled makes him look like a character from the move.

Same.
Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense at all.

I'm still theorising that the Gang knew Tom from somewhere, so they had some knowledge about his job and Ottomo's functions.
Maybe they saw him getting drunk and spilling some important information.

You didn't know? Samson was infesting a dog that Filia's family eventually adopted. Her story in SGM shows it.

marie killed spy x family
That was a crossover I didn't expect.
The art team seems to like that sort of thing, and I appreciate that.

I've read a few comments elsewhere with people troubled by Marie killing kids.
I find that kind of strange. Kids dying is par for course for Skullgirls's content.

Lol Marie is literally a kid. It's kid-on-kid violence.

Anyway yeah, it's an interesting retelling of (a part of) Filia's Origin Story. Importantly, it appears to confirm that Filia and her family (correctly) suspect that the Medici have something to do with her disappearance, but they can't do anything about it. This certainly wasn't something indicated in the Origin Story, although I suppose it is hinted at since even amnesiac Filia believes she is somehow responsible for Painwheels situation, and I can't imagine Filia feeling responsible if she didn't suspect her family was involved.

Treating the Skullgirl invasion of Maplecrest like a zombie outbreak, not unlike The Last of Us opening, was a good call. In SGM Filia origin story, it was like Marie was quietly floating door to door politely looking for Medicis. The Webtoon made it more dramatic and intimidating... at the cost of Marie looking like either a moron ("I forgot to read the phonebook for the address!") or a classist lunatic ("You may not be Medici, but rich suburb snobs are all complicit anyway, so die!").

Marie is strong enough to fly in like Magneto and explode cars with blue fire, but gets spooked by a couple police cars?

The Delilah "cameo" was cool, but I think they should have kept some of the SGM story where Filia convinces Marie to leave. I think Marie is at her best when she sticks to her mission. To me, it is out of character for her to mindlessly slaughter the suburbs. I mean, she risks everything to keep a skyscraper she snapped in half from falling on innocent Canopolis citizens.

lol, and I got to say silly Easter egg background characters only work if they don't interact with the plot. Watching the family from a wholesome action-comedy get brutally murdered by skeleton minions is a little too disruptive. Instead "oh no, the Skullgirl!" the reader is like "WTF! The Forgers!"

Yeah, I really like the webcomic so far and it's clear the team has a lot of fun making it. If they like Skullgirls and have a good time making it, than I'd say it's pretty good.

With that being said it's pretty weird it would show Marie attacking kids. You're right, Marie always comes off as this tragic villain who has a noble goal and struggles against becoming the monster she's going to become. It's odd to see Marie go out of her way to attack Maplecrest so viciously. I'd wager the next chapter will feature:

A: It shows that Double is actively encouraging Marie to get more violent and attack more people and Marie starts to regret acting so hastily, going on to try and steel her resolve to her original goal by protecting the people in Canopolis. Marie is still a kid, don't forget, and Double is trying to get her to fully embrace being a maid-for-killing avatar of death and destruction.

B: Somehow the kids escaped, because Marie refused to hurt the little kids. I can see Parasoul pulling up and a bunch of kids hiding saying the skeletons didn't hurt them because the maid lady said not to.

In Painwheel's story, Valentine was scoping Maplecrest to identify Medici-related families. Ignoring the seemingly weird timeline inconsistency (the attack should have happened before the events of 2E), maybe Marie already knew which houses and families to target.

Despite us seeing her "attacking" a family with kid and Maplecrest being full of them, none of the minions she was controlling in the later part of the chapter were kids, so it's not impossible that she let them go. But was it any less cruel to murder their parents in front of them and leave them orphans? I guess that's debatable.

unbeknownst to everyone in Maplecrest, Marie had already marked her targets weeks ago when she went door-to-door under the guise of selling Skullgirl Scout Cookies. (Featuring varieties such as Do-Si-Dies, Skin-Mints, Skullmoas, and Tag-Fighteralongs).

Previously confirmed in Black Dahlia's story but with all the weirdness with the Webtoon canon it's hard to say what's up. In a previous chapter it seemed like Lorenzo expected his son to know what he was talking about.

This thing can change its shape. Just look at Eliza's gameplay.

Nice to see a new chapter. I even kind of feel bad for Vitale and his daddy issues. Lorenzo really had it coming.

Yor Forger was combined with The Skeleton, and I'm surprised I'm not happy about that crossover.
Anyway, why having Loid and Anya in the comic? We have them at home, in this very game...

I was hoping we'll get more Filia, but instead we get a nice prelude to Dahlia's story mode. Cool, but also really sad.

I have some questions about the way some characters are written. There was quite a lot of talking about Marie already, but Cerebella raises some questions, too. She's more than willing to hurt people for Vitale, but she doesn't want to go to the city's slums for him?.. Feels strange to me.

Also, can we get that line about oversized music box in the game? It's too good to miss.
Playable Adam would be just a nice bonus, really.

Oh yeah, to expand on my earlier post, it's not that it's confirmed the Vitale didn't know about the Life Gem, it's more like it is confirmed that Lorenzo never told him about the Life Gem. As hinted in the games, I think Vitale has worked out a long time ago what the secret to his father's immortality is. His lines in the Webtoon seems almost mocking of his father, or at best kind of sarcastic. Like, "wow dad, I would have never figured it out by myself, what a great web of shadows you have woven".

This thing can change its shape. Just look at Eliza's gameplay.
Also Panzerfaust and Big Band squeezing into Parasoul's car lol. It's Just Skullgirls Things.

I think she is "willing" to do it although she is disgusted by it. But yeah, take into account that at this point, they had no idea it was Ms. Fortune and the Fishbone Gang who stole the stuff from Lorenzo. She likely understandably thought they were probably a more high-end, well-funded operation rather than a bunch of scrappy thieves from the slums, so she was more questioning the logic of why they were looking for clues in the alleys. Obviously she's not very bright and what Eliza is doing is correct.

I feel like the webtoon is getting a bit more divergent from real canon (perhaps unintentionally). I feel like we should probably cease thinking that ALL of it will be accurate to the game's canon.

Since it's a divergent timeline, I think we can consider events as not being strictly canon, like how the Filia home attack went down. The events in the Origin Story should be taken as the canon one.

For things that would have happened before the timelines diverge (like Lorenzo never telling Vitale about the Life Gem - something which is collaborated by Dahlia's story), I think that kinda stuff could be taken as canon.

Having said that, there are a few dubious things happening in the Webtoon, particularly the way certain characters act, that does not feel strictly canon, even in the multiversal sense. I think this is more of the writer taking some liberty and the editors giving him some freedom in order to let him tell the story he wants to tell. I do believe there is lore oversight on the story though so it shouldn't stray too far from the canon, but I think anything from the games would take precedence over the Webtoon if they happen to conflict.

My thing is why the hell did Peacock not instantly recognize Marie like in her Story Mode? Maybe it will be addressed next update, but just seems weird to not happen this episode, both from a lore standpoint and a literary one.

I do think it's getting close to the point where information going forward is set to be non-canon--even tho Dahlia hasn't found and killed the Fishbone Gang yet. We always knew it was a divergent timeline, but I do agree that a lot of character actions don't seem in-line with how they usually are (then again, we have Dahlia's story mode where plenty of characters in that seem to act odd, so who knows).

Yeah it was a bit weird since it did seem like Peacock did get a pretty good look at her. I guess she didn't expect her childhood friend to turn up as the Skullgirl, but it's not like Marie's appearance is that much different from when she was at the orphanage.

I think it can be taken similarly to the 2E stories where there are probably clues to what the canon event should be. For example, the Life Gem heist might not have happened exactly like in the Webtoon in the true timeline, but I think it gives a pretty good indication that something similar must have taken place. While Parasoul raiding the Medici Tower likely doesn't happen in the true timeline, Dahlia's story does seem to strongly suggest that Marie must have attacked the Medici Tower previously to the start of 2E, and the Fishbone Gang also probably took advantage of the aftermath of that to pull off the heist.

Well, the new chapter was... Intense.

The "Sexy Fish Man" (not my words) is killed by Dahlia. Meanwhile, there's Eliza and Cerebella fighting nearby. At the same time, Peacock finds out that the Skullgirl is Marie, but Marie doesn't seem to recognise her old friend. And there are still Filia's family trapped, and Parasoul is going to help them.

That escalated quickly.

Alternative continuity is once again at working. I don't remember Parasoul and pre-Samson Filia meeting, nor Peacock finding out about Marie before the story mode's events.

Still, it kind of works here.

Also, nice to see Big Band in action. As always. Peacock's gang is also getting some fine moments, and it's amazing. There's some insight into Molly's abilities, too. Oh, and it good to see a reference to Egret Dive (or scrapped Adam Dive?).

Another reason to root for playable Egrets.

Also, Lorenzo seems to have a big portrait of a cat, for some reason. He's really a man of good taste.

The Webtoon has a lot of amazing Adam content. There's a whole freaking moveset for him here, including fire extinguisher, finger guns and unbelievable amount of suffering.
I hope there's enough reasons to add him in the games.
