Beowulf Thread: Retiring from Retirement

Beowulf has a lot of moves that give him forward momentum, so he doesn't really need a separate roll. What if the chair could only be picked up during a Medium or Heavy by pressing Light?

Wouldn't that make impossible to use crouching normals in combos then though? Like, since Beowulf has an OTG grab when crouching that could screw up some stuff
Ok, so here are my observations from GG's training mode.

Once you have the hair needle on the ground if you charge forward towards the opponent (Millia is a rushdown character, she doesn't have short hops forward like Beowulf) and initiate a crouching normal before you get over the needle you will not pick it up. However, if you try to do any crouching normal from neutral while over the needle you will automatically pick it up. Unlike Beowulf though, there is no animation for picking up the needle so you're move isn't interrupted and you can combo like normal. Furthermore, none of Millia's moves change because she doesn't have the needle, save for the special that throws the needle, so being able to pick it up mid-combo isn't going to change your options.

So yes, it would make it impossible to have Beowulf use any crouching normals while using Millia's mechanic. It could work if there was no animation for the pickup and the chair just appeared on his back but that still doesn't address the problem of wanting to control when you have the chair or not.

we would could give Beo a command roll
Stop, Ninja. Stop.

He already has a pickup animation, he does it when you pick it up. :^P And it would probably end in a button.
However, if you are in the middle of an attack/jump/dash it won't play the animation. I know how the pin works.

Also Millia can't pick up the pin during attacks, if you actually hit D+button on the same frame when standing over it she won't pick it up.

BUT OKAY WE CAN GO FOR MANUAL PICKUP, which will be an interesting link thing too I guess.

We F-Ryougi now?

Maybe the difference between holding and tapping sHP, similar to sMP? Hold is you pick it up and attack, tap is just attack?

Team D+KK

Especially if it counts as a special with short recovery so you can do normal into chair pickup whiff cancels.

Ooooh, so like

(Without chair and not next to it)

st.lp > st.mp > st.hk > chair pickup whiff > st.mp > st.hk > chair pickup whiff > st.mk > cr.hp(2) > j.lk > Frog Splash

Yeah it would be like stance cancels

like stHK > chair whiff > dash jMK > ground string

switching between chair and non chair in combos aside from J HK would be amazing

Sorry to interrupt all you productive people.
But: I'm avoiding seeing Beo's stage or his latest batch of moves so I can be surprised in Beta. But in the video of his stage, did anyone notice if the stage had music yet?

no it just had some temp music placed in.

I think I'm with the party that would prefer manual pick up over automatic, but really both should be considered.
I like the ideas going around here, especially the ones involving longer ground strings.

I think that I would prefer manual pickup since there are stark differences between Beowulf's moveset with or without the chair. But seeing as Mike is probably going to implement it I'll wait until Beo hits the beta and see how he actually feels. I can't really think of a reason to favor automatic pickup though, so I think this change might be for the best.

Well no matter what Mike decides, we can try it all! That's the beauty of the beta. Possibly test a different way to pick up the chair every few days, or every week. Week one auto pick up, week two manual pick up done some way, week three manual another way, etc.

Hey @Mike_Z would it be possible to give Beowulf a death / near death related comeback install? Without making new frames, of course.

A thought just occurred to me. If the original implementation of Beowulf's chair had him automatically picking it up, does that mean that we won't be seeing moves that have Beowulf using the chair to change the height of his normals? All of them have been implemented and we already know what properties which moves will have with or without the chair. Plus the one move that was shown in the concept images that had him standing on his chair is a grab-mode finisher, so is that a scrapped feature?

It's a possibility, I mean Eliza's Blood mechanic was scrapped. The Indiegogo DLC gameplay descriptions are pretty outdated by this point. This is coming from a guy that still uses the existence of El Fuerte and R. Mika in Beowulf's Gameplay Inspirations as evidence of the possibility for an offensive command dash of some sort.

By the way, as long as we're bothering Mike Z by tagging him I'd like to put this question out there.
Will Beowulf have any sort of command based dash, roll, or other movement to help him move across the stage?

reminder that Mike Z specifically hates these types of questions, so you shouldn't really ask him

That's why I warned Ktulu. I just figured that if he's gonna incur Mike's wrath then I might as well take advantage of the fact that he's already angry.

Possible? Sure, anything is possible.
Going to? No.

standing on his chair
is that a scrapped feature?
Not necessarily, but it also might not be helpful or break lots of things. It'll still get tried, chair's not done yet.

Yours was the only annoying question, funnily enough.

Glad to hear that it isn't completely gone yet. I'll just keep sitting back and let you guys do your thing.

What if they buy you food? a bribery of Horchata for instance.

Just be yourself and everyone will notice you
Whether they love or despise you is unclear but you'll be noticed at least

@Mike_Z Actual question pertaining to beo
Is the low chair toss a low? Like will the chairs be used similarly to fukua's shadows?

(yes i'm an awful person for asking).

Mike Z will never love you.
I could tell him that I've dedicated my life to helping people, but I doubt that he wants me talking to him anymore.
Mike Z doesn't need some slob trying to earn his respect, what he needs is a break from the crap he deals with daily.
I'm telling this to myself so I don't feel heartbroken about his disregard for me.

I know he mentioned specifically that medium is an overhead.

My assumption is that light is a low and heavy is neutral or overhead as well.

He didn't mention anyting about the low tho, which is why i'm curious because i might play wulfcock since peacock doesn't have any full screen lows and that might be really fun to troll with

LP chair kick is currently a low, yes. Armor break and immediately ground techable. It doesn't (and won't) go anywhere near fullscreen, though.

@Denizen
He hasn't got all his specials yet.
