USA [May 27-29] Combo Breaker 2016 (Chicago, IL)

I thought I should throw this thing out there... since it kinda speaks against things people said in the past. Eliza, I'm looking at you.

I might have made some mistakes. Please forgive me if I did.

Congratulations to @SonicFox5000 taking it once again. Thank you to everyone that let me enjoy this. It was the best as always. Also 159man nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I was counting on you! T_T

Just got back from the event. Was a lot of fun. Will probably go do something like this again next time. It was cool meeting everybody.

Cool! It confirms that no Elizas showed up in Top 16... wasn't she supposed to be bar-none the best in the game or something?
Kappa

Was about to write corrections, but you addressed them in your post-scripts already. But what do SonicFox's and Liam's different colors mean?

this caught me too at first; sage's color is similar enough to the other that it took me a bit to notice, but the top 3 are color coded gold/silver/bronze

Tournament was great, it was fun meeting everyone, i hope i can make it next year, i want to say sorry if i gave the impression of being kind of distant or something, i just get really shy with first meetings.

Thank you everyone, this is the best community i ever met, also the mario party match was a nice close.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made shit hype, it was great.

Now that we're officially in post-tournament mode, I'd like to ask: Was there anything you had problems with here or had any concerns or (constructive) criticism of the tournament, the 10v10, or SNS events? Was there anything in particular you really liked and want to see more of?

(This information will help us with events in the future. If there is anything you want to talk about privately, feel free to pm me or contact me on twitter at any time.)

My only concern was that I would've loved to see Mr.Peck and Zeknife on Team World, but that's just my OCD talking. I didn't follow too much of the 10v10 drama before CB, so they probably had good reasons to not play in it. (Did they even make it to the venue on Friday night?)

Alright, I finally made it home! Just wanted to say that CB was an amazing event and it was a great first tournament! I got to play so many different players of all kinds of varying skill levels, and overall it made me excited to play more and (hopefully) get better lol

It was so nice meeting everyone! The community seems really great and everyone I met was really nice! I feel a little bad for shying away from talking/playing at first. I was still trying to put together names and faces!

Both of them had a chance to play for a slot at the event which was eventually won by Yaya.

If it does get run again and (since I won't want to be in charge of it) I would also suggest having an international balance. Regardless though, Zeknife and Peck really did get to show off their stuff this weekend~

That said, the 10v10 was the highlight of the event for me.

Oh yeah, someone left a DS4 at my setup last night. If this sounds like you, hit me up and I'll try to send it to you.

10 v 10 was great. Was there really any "beef" or was it just people taking ribs at one another online?

No beefs

nobody has made the customary Very Long After Tourney Shoutout Post yet so now's my chance to get in while the getting's hot.

Walking away from Combo Breaker 2016 I have to say this was really the highlight of my experience so far with skullgirls and fighting games in general. I had an amazing time but I definitely didn't make the most of the event that I could have. There was an UPSETTING number of people that I didn't end up talking to, I was heavily crippled by being a weenie and oppressive tiredness. I ended up missing the 10v10 for sleep which I gotta say has me pretty steamed but I guess I'll be catching the archives. There were also a lot of other things I missed out on that I sadly won't be able to look up the archives of.

It was really cool to be able to meet a lot of you, I gotta say I appreciate everyone 100x more now that I've met them. After this I really want to have a local community of my own so I'll do my best to continue encouraging that to my fullest capability.

Leaving Chicago I have a much greater appreciation for the sgc, deep dish pizza, and crosswalks. I don't see myself going to anything anytime soon but if I do, I shouldn't be too hard to find. Everyone in the sgc is great except joshb that dude smells.

I'm very happy that we could have such a successful, fun event. I think it goes without saying that @thehadou put on an amazing event, and I'm very grateful for his effort and attentiveness. Let's take a moment to reflect on what we just made happen:
  • we had players from 4 continents
  • we flew out 3 international competitors, one of which made Top 8
  • our presence at this major scene in the last three years has been 63 -> 104 -> 150
  • we were streamed on everyday of the event, including two community-run after-hours events, and a good Sunday time slot
  • we made a lot of people realize that Skullgirls is far from dead
That's really something. We can do even better in the future (here and elsewhere) if we keep working, keep coordinating, and keep growing.

On a more personal note, I got to spend a lot of time with you all this weekend. I shared some matches, some food, some alcohol, some conversation, and even a bed with 159man. I hugged as many of you as I could. I tried to put on the best show possible, and put others in a position to do the same. I was happy to do all these things, and will continue to do so.

Thank you for the great weekend.

Speaking of 10v10s, next year's is gonna be Pineapple vs No Pineapple, right?
OMG please make me captain of Team Pineapple!
If people want to see real beef ham this is what will do it.

SORRY I had to leave early; good news is the reason I had to leave has now been taken care of / is way better.

Shouts-out:
- @CaioLugon 's hair. It definitely is an alpaca.

- @zeknife - I'm sorry we didn't play more.

- @Grodie YOU ARE THE COOLEST!

- @Outlaw_Spike You have once again proven yourself an amazing person, and made me fatter in the process. We've already started eating them... I will leave my wife the last cookie this year, I learned my lesson. :^) The sugar cookies are pretty dang good too, you were right!

- @SonicFox5000 @dekillsage @Swiftfox-Dash @PME (I bet you didn't expect to be on there) @Mr Peck @keninblack @Kai @render @renderling (whoa you have an account!) @that Valentine cosplayer @dapurplesharpie @Zidiane @mcpeanuts @Fuzzy_Snugs @EFHRK @everyone I forgot - This was THE tournament this year for me, and the SGC is the reason why. More than anything, this community is a COMMUNITY, and it's fantastic as a result. The way everyone interacts nicely even after matches, the fact that our good players help beginners, the fact that anyone is welcome, just everything. I'm so sad about not being there Sunday, you have no idea. Thank you all!

- @thehadou - You've truly outdone yourself! Combo Breaker 2016 was even better than Combo Breaker 2015...that stage, and giant pretzels, and 24 hour venue, and a room big enough to hold everyone, the as not-overlapping-as-much-as-possible pool assignments, hand sanitizer, the incredible amount of stream time and the scheduling of everything, VSav on main stage....the list goes on, and every single thing is a positive. I'm already looking forward to CB2017!

- @event horizon (who is not on here?) @BGCallisto (and "Mrs. BGCallisto"!) and @spooky/Mando of IEBattlegrounds/the entire rest of the streaming staff and (who are hella not on here), for being truly wonderful streamers, and for not organizing the event around the streams to the detriment of the people attending in person. I know how much work goes on behind the scenes, and I hope somebody bought you all several beers. :^)

and

@Skarmand - The world would be significantly less bright without you.

Jesus fucking Christ. People weren't fucking around with one getting better at a game once you go to a tournament. I'm currently bodying people who have twice the amount of play time that I do (I have 136 hours*, they have 300+ hours). Thanks for everyone who helped me with the game. Specifically: Elda Tulda (spelling?), joshb911, kn0dt, Alcoholic Robot, and Nobody.

*Much of that is from a few years ago when the game first launched on Steam. Recently I likely have like 80 hours.

our presence at this major scene in the last three years has been 63 -> 104 -> 150
I really don't want to be "that guy", but couldn't some of the increase membership be due to the fact that Skullgirls won't be at EVO, thus some people treated Combo Breaker as the game's "EVO" thus were more likely to go out of their way to make it?

63->104 was almost certainly because we gave up on evo, I honestly think that 104->150 though was from new blood coming out. We more or less dropped evo after 2014.

I think this is an accurate view. Our higher numbers are a result of our being more focused, and more numerous. And moving forward, we can strengthen both those facets of our Combo Breaker experience.

@Dolfinh Did your hand end up feeling okay the rest of the weekend?
Combo Breaker is the EVO of skullgirls because Rick knows how to give the community what they want and not just 4 shitty fold out tables that Lab Zero has to pay for in the middle of the ballroom to run a side tournament on.
ftfy

Yeah, this was the idea. Focus community turnout on events that actually want us there, and prove that we'll turn up at them.

I don't want to make this too long, so I won't mention everyone individually, but know that everyone I met was a pleasure to meet (and meet again because I can't remember names or put them to faces). I'm sorry to those I didn't get to spend as much time with because there's only so much time in a tournament weekend. Hit me up on Steam or Discord and we can shoot the shit and maybe even play some SG :^).

@LazyBakemono - I swear if I forget your name again, you can punch me in the face or something. God damn.

@Broseidon Rex - Thanks for always setting up fun things for everyone like the s'mores and pool party that you did this year. Tournaments wouldn't be the same without you. I don't know if anyone ever tells you this, and it may not always be apparent, but I for one always appreciate your efforts.
@dapurplesharpie - Thank you for always getting our asses in gear and looking out for us whenever we go for food or like, do anything. lol. It's always a pleasure to see you. I never did get to take any pics of your Squig cosplay. lol

Getting food with people, bonfire s'mores, Pool party, taking over the pool area on Sunday, Mario Party hype, getting offline matches with people I wouldn't otherwise be able to, and simply seeing everyone again on top of the best run tournament ever.

I couldn't ask for anything more out of a tournament experience. Love you guys.
I wish I could have spent more time/played SG with more of you.

Not going to name everyone but thanks to all the people that I played casuals with and chatted with over the weekend you were great. Extra double shoutouts to the people who recognized me after meeting me only one time last year. You guys have that name and face thing down, I am so terrible with that shit. Extra thanks to @Psychopath for keeping me company in the lineup for badges, that would have been torture and to @SCOTT_WHALE for the pizza and the Squigly advice. Even though you're never going to read this shoutouts to KBrad for making me laugh so hard I couldn't get it together enough to just give him a slice of the damn pizza. Also to Worldjem and Liam for representing our Country in top16.

Apologies to the players who I recognized but never said hi to because of social awkwardness or just not really wanting to shout too loud over the constant noise in the venue because I wrecked my throat on Friday - ie @SonicFox5000 , @Mike_Z , @Kai , @fenster , @dekillsage , @mcpeanuts and probably more I'm forgetting. I get so nervous trying to introduce myself to people its not even funny.

I managed to miss most of the out-of-venue festivities this year but I really did have a good time playing you guys and just chatting and spectating. It was an amazing tournament and an amazing venue for a tournament, much better venue than last year which was kinda cramped (but still fun).

Playing people in person is such an amazing experience it makes me sad that I can't travel to tournaments more often. I get into SO MUCH SALT playing people online but in person its just impossible to not have fun, even when I'm getting bodied for free. Love all you guys. See you next year.

@Mike_Z I made an account when I got home from the airport today ;)

I'd also like to thank all you Skullgirls people for being super cool and welcoming to me even though I am new to the Lab Zero family and don't really play SG (yet?) and have weirdly almost the same handle as @render. Hopefully I'll be able to make it next year and will actually know roughly how to play and join in on the casuals! Speaking of which, if you're also new and want to play some sets, or not new and don't mind teaching, please message me!

(Also, @Mike_Z it looks like the cool Valentine cosplayer might also have an account: @carbonbae).

Heads over to beginner forum to meet people to play with...

Does anyone know who that cosplay Valentine girl was? She did a good job.

I'm surprised that my cardboard box made as much of a splash as it did. Enough of a splash that @Mike_Z and I were casually chatting about it during our streamed match and the TOs had to motion for us to move it along. Whoops.

I'm thrilled that my first tournament experience was as fun and welcoming as you guys made it, I'm definitely going to try to get myself out to more events such as this.
