Webtoon thread

I did a double take with that quote about Black. I just know them from their really popular fancomics and also being engaged to Personasama(I think), not being involved with the game that early, that didn't sound right indeed.

I caught up with the comic yesterday since I keep forgetting to check Webtoons (more of a Tapas person), and I still like it quite a lot, yeah! I already know Black's comic capabilities so excited to see what they bring to the table on an already great work.

Okay, the Webtoon is delayed. Insert the "two weeks" joke... again.

But we got some information about that mysterious man. His name is Ferdinand (probably).

Brings back some interesting parallels...

I'm glad new Skullgirls fans are finally getting to experience the Two Weeks curse first-hand.

Yeah, it seems like he's the other half to the Franz Ferdinand reference. While the assassination of Duke Franz Ferdinand was the event that led to WWI in real life, in the SG universe, Franz was the primary aggressor in the Grand War. Just going by the reference, Ferdinand has to be someone close to him and most likely highly involved in Canopian politics since the Grand War days. His brother, perhaps.

His clothing kind of hints to something similar, too.

Also, he probably plays music.

I hope, we'll find it out sooner, than in two weeks.

The bastard brother of king franz?
Could be a legitimate half-brother (i.e. if one of his parents remarried). Or maybe they had the same parents - genetics can be weird.

All this assuming they are actually brothers of course. It's just a wild guess lol.

Yeah. Based on what he wears, I doubt he's just some general or high-ranking officer in the military. Definitely feels like he's part of the royal family if he's going around in such a flamboyant get-up, including what appears to be his personal squad. (Wonder if they are another Black Egrets squad or a differently named one entirely)

There was supposed to be the other Egret squads, originally. Maybe this concept is finally making its way into the canon.

We really need to get more information about the Canopian military system. I hope the webcomic will flesh it out more.

Yeah, hopefully.

Personally I feel like I can imagine how the Canopian military was originally supposed to be organised, based on their, ahem, primary inspiration. But since the current devs are trying to move away from that aesthetic, and I doubt Alex had solidified a lot of details about it, I can imagine the way the military is now in lore could be a lot different to how it was concepted. For example, Alex said that there are the trenchcoated Egrets that are high-ranking officers, seen in earlier concept art, but so far we have never seen them so I wonder if they still exist at this point.

New part is out, and the new art team is here now.
No "two weeks" jokes anymore.

I need to get used to the new art style now, though I kind of like it. But I will miss Molly's facial expressions, for sure. And Adam used to be more fanservice-y, though I sort of like his new image here. Though, I hope the art would improve slightly, because something still bothers me in some panels.

I didn't exactly understand the writing in this particular part. Raises too many questions from a certain point of view. Ferdinand is the main offender, actually. And - yeah, our theories about Ferdinand were incorrect. But at least he brings some much-needed musical associations.

Still, it's very hard not to like Peacock. Also, The Fishbone Gang has some nice screentime, riffing on the chapter's events. Hope to see more of them, while they are still alive.

Also, turns out that Mike Exner III is a fan of Stanley. This is great. For me, at least. Looking forward to the Science Shark's appearance :PUN:

Yeah him being an Egret that got fired for simping for Parasoul too hard was not what I was expecting but there you go.

I'm still wondering what exactly he meant by being an officer of the court though. Does he mean the court of law, as in he is a member of the judiciary? Or he means the court as in the royal court? The former is how the phase would be normally used, but I feel like the latter makes slightly more sense, since it would probably mean that Franz sent him in order to stop Parasoul from trying to arrest Lorenzo, although it would raise the question why Franz sent someone who got removed from his position for being a bit too obsessed with his daughter.

EDIT: He did say that Franz sent him lol I'm a dum-dum.

Okay, so we'll wait for another coming of Two Weeks. We have plenty of opportunities to see it again in action.

Yeah, it's raises quite a lot of questions already.
For now, it looks like he works directly under King Franz.

although it would raise the question why Franz sent someone who got removed from his position for being a bit too obsessed with his daughter.
This part rubs me the wrong way, really. It doesn't make a lot of sense from any point of view.

Though, maybe it is time to dive deep into conspiracy theories.
Maybe, the evidence of Ferdinand's unprofessional behaviour was planted? It actually belongs to Adam. He masterminded the fall of Ferdinand, while trying to get rid of his own incriminating stuff. His reaction at Ferdinand says it all, really :PUN:
And Franz knows the truth somehow... Maybe because he's in the same band as Ferdinand?

That does seem to be the most likely explanation right now yeah. But regardless of anyone's position, no one would be able to refuse a direct order from the king.

I mean he didn't deny it lol. He basically just said "it wasn't as bad as it looks". And the way he talked to Para he definitely has some feelings for her still. Maybe Franz thinks having someone who is infatuated with Para working for him would be useful, like how Vitale finds Bella useful.

I do like Adam's expression when Molly listed out Ferdinand's crime lol. It's screaming: "Hope no one tries to check my quarters"

The fact that he knows about Franz's current situation at all confirms this theory.
Also, his squad's uniform seem to imply he's in a sort of elite position.

When you put it like this, Franz's decision looks kind of realistic...

Though, I think we shouldn't compare Ferdinand to Cerebella. She wields a powerful Living Weapon. Also, she's not as creepy :PUN:

New chapter is out. And it goes mostly as we thought.

We finally get some information about Ferdinand's position at the court. Also, his surname too.
I guess, Parasoul's decision to give up has something to do with Peacock. That fight reminded the princess to go home and watch Annie's show.

I guess, the art got slightly better since the previous chapter. Still, not enough of Molly's facial expressions. Adam outdoes her at one point.

Speaking of Adam. He gets quite a lot of suffering here. I guess, his backstory seems to be quite similar to the one of Panzerfaust's. Probably, the government makes the Egrets to forcefully read royally approved parenting books, too. That's just cruel.

Finally, there's another cliffhanger. Somebody probably will try to prove that new isn't better, if you know what I mean.

Lol. While I'm sure the Egrets have required readings, it just strikes me as Adam being a total nerd and actually reading them in his spare time and memorising whole sections.

But yeah, enjoyed this chapter quite a bit and I do like the more action-focused ones. I think the previous team did fight choreographies just a tad better, but the more consistent art from the new team is highly appreciated.

Widely known enough that he's still the head of state and Parasoul, his eldest child, is still the Crown Princess.

What might not be widely known is his current condition. It has been stated that the King had "disappeared", and we don't know what was the last time he had made a public appearance. In the Webtoon, we could see that Canopy currency still bears his old image. (Although, it's not really a common practice for the image of the monarch on currencies to be updated anyway until the next one takes over, so it might not mean anything.)

The Webtoon is its own timeline, yeah. The story parallel the events of the SGM Main Story, but there are differences that show that they are separate universes.

One of my thoughts about this episode is Parasoul's line: "[the Labs] have produced some of the most significant threats to the realm we have ever encountered". Black Dahlia and Ottomo are pretty dangerous, but they are just Mafia hitmen and I don't think they pose an existential threat to the kingdom, so I wonder what other things the Labs have produced that could have got loose and caused such a problem that Para would be worried about. Perhaps it was part of the actual reasons why the Labs were shuttered in the first place.

It's supposed to be a sort of an "alternative prequel", just like SGM. The main plot is more or less the same, but the details may differ widely.

And, boy, did it differ...

So how widely known is it that Franz is alive? I thought even Umbrella had no idea.
That's a good question.
Judging by Parasoul's status, he wasn't officially presumed to be dead, at the very least.
What was told to Umbrella is a completely different issue.

Before the Webtoon, the large part of the fandom assumed that only Parasoul knew the truth about Franz's status and whereabouts. Then, the Webtoon established that quite a lot of the higher-ups (and people like The Named Egrets Team) were in it, too. Now it gets way more complicated with the recent chapter.

It reminds me of Robo-Fortune's Story Mode. The ending, especially. Maybe, Brain Drain have already attempted something similar in the past.

I mean, I don't think we knew anything about who actually knew where Franz was or what he was doing.

I dunno about Brain Drain by himself but there probably has been things that originated from the Labs that must have caused a lot of trouble for the kingdom. For example, the accident related to Lab 7's psychic soldier experiment was powerful enough to wipe out that lab, even before the ASG Labs were officially shut down. Perhaps the fallout from that accident was widespread and caused a lot of trouble for the citizens of Canopy beyond the actual Labs.

Which takes us back to Alex's old statement that there is actually a psychic soldier, apart from Brain Drain, who has not been named yet but is important to the current plot. Makes you think.

Of course, we didn't. But now we find something exciting every week, yay.

I'm still puzzled about the revelation from the recent chapter, for example.

Well, the psychic soldiers were mostly unstable. I guess, it would be enough just by itself.

Also, the fact that Lab 0 could do whatever its leaders wanted can be considered a threat too.

Yeah, I have always known that the King is still alive, but ever since Umbrella's story and each time he had appeared in the Webtoon, I have needed to adjust my assumptions about what Franz had actually been doing. It's confusing but also exciting.

Exactly. And they are all supposed to be dead, except Brain Drain and the mysterious other survivor. Hmm.

Kind of odd that Valentine would be confused as to how Double knows how the Skullgirl works. Weren't/wouldn't the ASG labs be very familiar with the Shapeshifter's connection to the Skullgirls?

Valentine sure does have a lot of sympathy for the little monster who just killed a couple of her only friends and coworkers and is presently trying to cut a swath of murder through the largest city of her country.
In all honesty, I'm impressed. This is probably the most sympathetic a character has been toward Marie in the history of the franchise.

I think the ASG know about the Shapeshifter although none of them had ever been this close and personal interacting with her before, which is probably to Val's credit that she has managed to get this close and gathering information about her.

Yeah, the interaction feels a bit strange to me, although I can sort of understand that she might be acting in a manipulative way in order to gain Marie's trust. Although, deep down, she's not actually a bad person so she might have some genuine sympathy for Marie's situation - perhaps Marie's past is not so different from her own past.

Though, I'm puzzled by Umbrella's pink eyes. And by Umbrella at all, really. But it's nice to see her and Parasoul having a sister time.
Yay, Adam is back.

I suppose, Dahlia's fight with Peacock wouldn't last longer, because she definitely needs to hurry up to the Tower and commit another serious crime.
But it's nice to see Peacock ruining the casino. The girl is surely having fun.

Valentine appearing is the best thing ever. With a new design, no less!

I prefer to think that she has some sympathy. Anyway, she's still ready to perform her duties as a nurse, and it's kind of heartwarming. We rarely see that side of Valentine.

Oh yeah, that is weird. In the previous chapter her eyes were the right colour too.

I prefer to think that she has some sympathy. Anyway, she's still ready to perform her duties as a nurse, and it's kind of heartwarming. We rarely see that side of Valentine.
In SGM she does act like that a lot, to the extent that SGM players don't even realise she's supposed to be a villain or an anti-hero. Not sure that I like how she's given a more sympathetic treatment straight away though, especially since the Webtoon is probably gonna be how a lot of players are going to be experiencing the lore for the first time. Her character in 2E was interesting because she was portrayed as a villain first before her real motivation is revealed.

She is a nurse after all. Someone's hurt, her job is to treat them.

She is a nurse after all. Someone's hurt, her job is to treat them.
It's more like the manner in which she cares for Marie that is surprising than the fact that she was caring for her. She also cares for Painwheel and the SGM MC for example, but her mannerisms are usually a lot more cold and distant.

Which could be due to her trying to cozy up to Marie, but it was still surprising to see.

I agree. I don't think Val actually cares about Skullgirl Marie. Probably playing the loyal subordinate to stay in their good graces. She feels guilt for kidnapping Carol, but I doubt she can easily forgive Marie for helping Double wipe out the Last Hope unit.

For weird interactions, did anyone else note how Vitale addressed his father?

Vitale said:
"Right away, Lorenzo."
As for Umbrella's pink eyes, maybe they'll turn the correct shade of magenta (and eventually glowing red) the closer she gets to Skull Heart? I think it is just a minor coloring error.

Umbrella Pain.png

Valentine's behavior could also be attributed to her current intention of gathering information about the Skullgirl. Won't do her much good if Marie drops dead so soon, especially after everything Valentine's already been through. Though I assumed the Skullgirl's regenerative properties would be like, obvious. Maybe she's playing dumb too?

Umbrella bringing up "what happened to Father" as a testament to her combat prowess (?) is... interesting.
Also, the transition from Umbrella waking up in the middle of the night to Parasoul fighting her is pretty funny.

For weird interactions, did anyone else note how Vitale addressed his father?

Does the public know Vitale is Lorenzo's son??? I'd dare say that Lorenzo currently looks younger than his children.

On a similar note, does Peacock have any prior knowledge of Black Dahlia here?

For weird interactions, did anyone else note how Vitale addressed his father?
Yeah that is a bit awkward. There are times were Vitale refers to Lorenzo by his name, but only in the third person (when he's talking about his father to someone else), but referring to his father by his name when directly talking to him is a bit weird.

I think it is just a minor coloring error.
I'm definitely leaning towards art error since there has never been any past instances where her eye colour becomes that pale. It's either normal red or red with a skull. It was also red in the previous chapter in that one panel she appeared in, and her proximity to the Heart wouldn't have been any different from then till the latest chapter.

I was thinking if it could be a colour palette/temperature thing for those panels, but Para's hair and Hungern's eyes are their regular red colour so that's not it.

I mean, maybe the Labs really didn't have that information, so it would have been another new intelligence gained for them thanks to Val's infiltration. The ASG Labs hasn't been around for that long (probably around 2 decades at most as of game time), and I doubt any of them have got this close to a Skullgirl before.

Umbrella bringing up "what happened to Father" as a testament to her combat prowess (?) is... interesting.
Hmm, I think she means that if she's mature enough to be entrusted with the knowledge of what happened to her dad, Para shouldn't think of her as a kid and allow her to be involved with grown-up stuff.

Also, the transition from Umbrella waking up in the middle of the night to Parasoul fighting her is pretty funny.
Just another regular day in the royal Renoir household lol.

Does the public know Vitale is Lorenzo's son??? I'd dare say that Lorenzo currently looks younger than his children.
Pretty sure they do, and they must have already figured out that Lorenzo has some sort of secret that makes him unageing. Given the fantasy setting of SG and the fact there are numerous immortals wandering around, it's probably not super surprising. But as Eliza mentioned in her story, the public don't know what exactly that secret is. (The secret being the Life Gem)

On a similar note, does Peacock have any prior knowledge of Black Dahlia here?
Hmm, hard to say. Someone at the Labs could have told her about Dahlia, although they might not have felt there was any reason to at that point.

Cool finally seeing the heist in motion! And Ottomo has a neat design, I wouldn't mind seeing more of him. Now we wait for the aftermath....

Yeah, I liked how they had an Ottomo panel and then an Eli close-up in the vents to compare their similarities. Maybe eel-type Dagonians inspired Tom when creating the mech? I never thought of the two together before.

Seeing how they put credits at the bottom, is Episode 14 the end? Leave the gruesome and gorey consequences for the Fishbone Gang unsaid not shown?

And lol at the cleanup crew being Daisuke Jigen, Arsène Lupin III, Fujiko Mine, and Goemon Ishikawa XIII lookalikes

And yeah, it makes sense that's where he'd draw inspiration with him being Dagonian as is. Maybe he was jealous of them?
