The only thing that makes Beowulf seem foreign is the fact the original story came from north europe, when Canopy Kingdom as an USA/Paris look.

I think we can all agree on one thing though. Some one is gonna die

Someone always dies. Otherwise it wouldn't be an anime inspired game

Well, Marie does always die.

Oh yeah, the Skullgirl isn't important.
You know, just the thing that probably killed a lot of people.
No big deal.

The Skullgirls is more of a plot point then a person.

But I thought she was so important, that she is required for the cannon.

Thanks a lot @Cellsai. Good to hear the rest of this man's dulcet tones. I have to admit it was pretty heartwarming to hear the crowd cheers at the end, Beowulf really is a totally different breed of fighting game character.

On the topic of voice effects: http://romneymebones.tumblr.com/post/114241924222 (WARNING, LOUD AUDIO)

I adore how Beowulf's voice has his own Hulk Hogan vibe grafted into it.
It also personally makes me happy that Beowulf is indeed, A far-fetched and a much, MUCH different breed from all other fighting game characters.

Someone made a reference post for eliza's audio a long time ago, so, here is a pretty lazy one for beo that is missing lots of stuff but homes in on a few of my favorites.

There is a single reference to the infamous super dragon chants.

One slightly altered scott steiner quote (the big bad wolf is your hookup).

"To be the man you've got to beat the man" is a catchphrase of ric flair.

One reference to the ho train and the godfather (the aroo train.)

"It's beowulf time" is a vader thing.

"It's true" is a Kurt Angle reference.

About a million rock quotes. (finally, jabronis,it doesn't matter, know your role, etc)

"This business" is a pretty clear reference to triple h.

"Sweet" on the superkick..sweet chin music/hbk

"The wildest there is, was ,and ever will be" is a reference to bret hart

Numerous instances of beowulf directing his opponent and even the cameras (hardcam, body bump, highspot, slow it down.)

A winner is you is a famous meme from nes pro wrestling

Reference to smark terms such as: botching (messing up a move), back bump (jump on your back), corpsing (breaking character in the ring), shooting (a type of out of character interview or statement), -5 stars is actually a reference to david meltzer who is probably the biggest wrestling journalist in the world.

Blading is the carney practice of using a razor blade to let a little blood in a match.

A hot tag is the type of tag where one guy in a tag match is getting beat on, and after a good length of time he gets his partner in the ring, who then proceeds to cleans house.

"Can you dig it?" is a booker t reference...which he stole from the warriors.

"Hell Yeah" is a random exclamation and also steve austin's catch phrase.

The 128 inch pythons line is a reference to hulk hogan talking about his pythons. Running wild..brother...wolfamania. etc.

Oh yeahhhh...totally a randy savage quote thar.

Chopping while wooing is another flair reference.

Pipebomb..cm punk dur.

bang bang is a reference to cactus jack.

the announcer quote about someone being broken in half is a paraphrased quote from jr.

"Hammer" may or may not be an allusion to the legendary burning hamaaa.
Like I missed alot..but the amount of obscure stuff that no one will ever get really shows a hell of alot of effort.

My personal favorite that wasn't mentioned here is that sometimes when doing the Hogan ear he'll shout "What?" in homage to one of the most annoying mid-promo chants started by the legendary Stone Cold Steve Austin.

yeah that ones good too.

I added all Beowulf's line references mentioned here to the OP.

I'm disappointed how there's no actual Old English lit references aside from "Heorot" but I gotta hold it like what Night Phyre said in an interview.

I actually kind of liked Kuzla's thoughts that Beowulf could be from another kingdom. Maybe not as royalty, but just as an immigrant so we can learn what other places are like.
Of course Beowulf's a "Real Canopian" so that's quickly shut down.

Nah you can be an immigrant in America, be raised for about 90% of your life and still have the right to say that you're a "real American".

Seriously (?) though, it's either Beowulf coming from another country or being raised in the library.

I thought that was pretty interesting..lots of wolf references and especially references to pro wrestling...but few to no viking references.

I mean, I always took it that the beowulf thing was more of an allegory than a blatant retelling of beowulf by wrote...vikings were after all the wrestlers of their era if you really think about it. Muscle-bound brutes running around beating people up whilst seeking food and cash. See allegory..meaning not actually a viking.

But still, I assumed there would be a little in that direction at least not that it bothers me. Also, count me in the minority of people who think that a funny scandinavian accent was never the way to go.

I hope there will be some Viking references in his likes and dislikes (maybe he'll like mead, anyone?), although there's a chance that there won't be any references.

I also wonder what Geats, Naegling, and Heorot are in the Skullgirls universe. In the real world they're Beowulf's tribe, Beowulf's sword against the dragon, and a party house respectively.

But still, I assumed there would be a little in that direction at least not that it bothers me. Also, count me in the minority of people who think that a funny scandinavian accent was never the way to go.
I'm one of the people who would want him to have a foreign accent (to be specific Swedish, and also not a funny variant) but the Soviet Announcer had already made it up for Beowulf lacking said accent.

EDIT: I was wondering why Double would (possibly) try to trick Beowulf into doing some things, indicating why Beowulf expresses a certain dislike for her (namely, "You're done fooling me!", "This business gets ugly enough without you.", "Imposter!", and some blaming intonation when calling her name).

I figured out that maybe it's because Beowulf knows too much about the Skullgirls universe (probably from reading books). He recognizes Eliza as the Crimson Scourge and knows certain parasites and their names (not sure why only Samson is called though, and he recognized Leviathan as a dragon-type parasite but I think anyone would know that Levi is a dragon after fighting him). It's possible that the Mother doesn't want anyone to know who they are and what they're planning to, especially from a regular human being like Beowulf. To prevent the information to be spread, they sent Double to screw Beowulf's mind by tricking him into becoming a criminal and probably sent Valentine to distract Beowulf from whatever he's gonna do because of what he knows about the Skullgirls universe.

Boy, that explanation makes me picture Beowulf as a super nerd. Imagine Beowulf as a kid knowing every single inch of the Canopy Kingdom with such detail, and then in his teens he knows the Canopy Kingdom's politics and the Medici Mafia on surface. In his adulthood he knows what's actually going on with the world he's living, including the Skullgirl and the Trinity, and that's what makes Double (and Valentine?) chase after him.

I wonder if the "sex appeal" line and the possible subtle sexual symbolism will pass the ESRB.

Hey night phyre. can you at least give us a hint about the so called "subtle sexual still picture" In beowulfs story mode? who does it like, involve. I mean...i'm so curious I just gotta know.

They'd get an answer on that before they submitted the build. Besides, certification isn't about ESRB stuff.
