Street Fighter V

How much of the advice did they take on KI?
If I had to provide a useless number, I'd say between 60 and 70%.

And also, would you say KI is the best current gen fighting game on the market or do you believe otherwise?
I assume you're excluding SG. Is current-gen PS4/xBone?
Does UNiEL count?

Excluding Skullgirls and doujin(-ish?) stuff like Yatagarasu, Uniel would indeed be my pick.

UNIEL is hella and UNIE [st] is even more hella
wish we'd get it at some point

Just remembered that KOF13 is also balling, though you might not count that as a current gen game (although it's on pc too so eh).

I'm hoping that the PC launch of UNIEL will see it gain a bit more community. Before I sold my PS3, finding matches in UNIEL was a sad, sad affair.

If you execute specific special moves during the normal throw delayed tech window you are unable to immediately escape throws. Each characters V-skills, V-triggers, V-reversals, critical arts, and moves have been set individually.
What do they mean by "unable to immediately escape throws"? "Immediately" is a confusing part here for me. Does it render all tech frames as useless or what?
Reposting this for the new page. Sorry:)

BTW, I found info about the "jump grab", if anyone is interested in this stuff (below both a text explanation and a demonstration):

So with a lot of supers becoming EX moves, does that mean we get Hyper Bomb for EX Power Bomb?

Backdrop Bomb better be back

b

You know, normally when characters are brought back I don't really care what is done to them, moveset-wise...but SF5 Alex really pisses me off.

What else besides the focus attack-like thing?

wait his moveset already out?

all i've seen is his v-skill/ trigger which i'm kinda like eh? towards.

the exclusion of hyper bomb as his super really makes me question things... but then again the wonderful excuse of Alex being "younger" [ he kinda looks the same age really] can have the designer say that he doesn't know how to do hyper bomb as a super just yet.

Alex's looks kinda... wonky. His face looks very gorilla like and he has short hair but long bangs that go under his head band? what? Where is the long golden hair? where is my ponytail?!

All I can hope now is that Capcom gives Alex his signature New York accent, that if they mess with that then... they did a disservice to Alex the hero of SF3.

edit: oh... he doesn't have elbow... WHY DOESN'T HE HAVE ELBOW?!... i'm done...

goodbye... i'm going back to 3S. you did it Capcom... you butchered Alex. no elbow. i am in shock. OH but yeah... Make the head butt a special move guys yeah okay. It's not like you could just make it a command normal where it made Alex's gameplay really cool with a strong move that has clear risks when using it. oh no screw elbow slash but keep the headbutt.

well keep as in modify it so it's a small leaping command grab.

No Slash Elbow, no Air Stampede, no DDT, no headbutt (combining-them-sorta is not the same). Super is in all likelihood a hit into a cinematic just like every SF5 super that's not a projectile. V-Trigger is yet another armored hold attack (because really WHAT ELSE can you possibly do for a new move, other than something with armor? Certainly not give him one of the moves he didn't get otherwise.) Rather than make him an interesting kinda-all-around character like 3s/CFJ/TvC, he's...a grappler.

To me he is a great example of change-because-we-were-told-to rather than change-because-we-should.

He seems like he's kinda similar to birdie, tbh.

Why they chose to make his leaping grab as retooled Stungun Headbutt instead of DDT I have no idea. DDT is so much cooler.

My guess it was just easier to animate/implement

his CA being a supercharged Razor's Edge is p rad though

shit... damn it... I did a knee jerk reaction.

damn it. Sorry for ranting here. But seriously this is a very gimped version of Alex. And it annoys me that Capcom is going to hide behind the "He's young." excuse.

shoot man. Was having a pretty good day up until now. damn it.

Like ... Elbow was his move to get in on his opponent. Stomp too, only it was a little more for mixups and stuff. DDT... it was neat when had someone on tilt but you were too far for a dash up powerbomb. But really come on. Flash Chop was there for gimmicks and Elbow was for combos and pressure. You just can't get rid of that. It kills Alex's entire game play.

His 'new super' seems like its going to be Boomerang Raid with a different looking throw at the end.

*shrug*

I played basically no 3rd Strike and I can't say that I thought Alex was visually or thematically appealing to me outside of being a Hulk Hogan reference, so I can't say I'm overly disappointed since my expectations for this character were basically nothing.

I'm still holding out until I try him, but man, this doesn't look good. Also, Stun Gun Headbutt as a special is an odd choice.

Putting Alex's bangs under the bandana is one of the weirdest design choices I can think of. It's like a Superman with a circle around the "S" on his chest instead of a diamond, like they're trying to make a "what's wrong with this picture?"

i know right? also no ponytail. What is with that? they guy lives in a mobile trailer. Come on give me long haired Alex who's training super hard who doesn't have time to have wacky hair cuts where he has short hair except his bangs.

I quit MKX for the exact same OS. With KI coming out shortly, Melty coming this summer, and CPE already out... their clock is ticking as far as I'm concerned.

I wonder if it is universal or if it only works off of Ken's s.LP.

lol like half of Alex's specials are gone.

Hate how much SFV is dumbing down the characters for the sake of it thinking this will ironically bring the casuals by droves and not the other fuck ups they went with. I bet all the dlc characters [besides Guile because he barely had a movelist to begin with + even Capcom knows they need their token charge quota] are gonna get gimped compared to their old counterparts. Sad really.

Well I don't know about that. They did remove a lot of Karin's moves in the translation to SF5 and she turned out to be a pretty cool character.

I mean she was pretty clearly bloated with moves in Alpha 3 so that's fine, I think.

Alex though, I dunno. I never played SF3 Alex so I can't really give him a fair judgement but tbh I still think people are jumping the gun saying he's ruined. I mean we haven't even seen ANY gameplay of him yet. Just basing their opinions on a move list.

Let's just say that Elbow was "the move" that made Alex's gameplay possible. It was a great move to use to close the distance between your opponent, you could use it in combos, it was good for pressuring your opponent and bullying them into the corner. Flash Chop is a slower move used for shenanigans and combo-ing into one of his grab moves if the heavy version hits, Stomp [despite people saying it's a scrub killer] is good for mixups and another way to avoid projectiles if timed correctly.

I don't know what you were expecting. The whole game is very simplified to "this is what we want you to do with these characters", more so than say Alpha 2, 3. Like having v-trigger cancel things where sc's aren't but sc's where v-trigger cancel isn't

I don't think it will bring casuals by droves, removing specials, but it's most likely easier on them to cut the complexity down anyways. Especially if they're trying to produce 6 characters in the whole year.

Is it possible that was just a partial movelist and he still has some moves not listed?

Subjective statement. :^P

This is true, but removing her command grab changed the core of the character. IMO that's not acceptable, and that's what they did with Alex losing Slash Elbow.

I think there are multiple ways of capturing the essence of a character and a clone of previous iterations is only one of those ways.

If this already bland as shit character's entire schtick was an equally as bland dashing elbow... well maybe its removal is for the best (clearly I'm in the minority in this view seeing as how popular this character is).

Anyway, I think a lot of people are eager to hate on SFV (for all the wrong reasons), and that especially comes out during character reveals (just wait until the Ibuki shitstorm). But as a person not saddled with any Alex nostalgia baggage, he looks at least as interesting as most of the current cast.

lol so you have to hate on SFV itself to be disappointed on how a character that haven't had a proper SF debut in years turned out? It doesn't take a hater to acknowledge that Capcom fucked up in some aspects of the game. That is pretty much common knowledge at this point. It takes someone that isn't at least on the Capcom apologist brigade that you would often see in Ehub comments to at least recognize that.

Considering I was an Alex player [both SF3 and TvC] and not someone making a non informed opinion I feel I have the right to point out some obvious flaws [with the information we have now] with the impression I'm getting.

Also the 'it's too early to hate no gameplay footage shown yet' goes both ways. It's also too early to hypothetically hype up this new gimped incarnation with this 'less moves is a good thing!' logic.

Also funny I never specifically said I hated/won't play/etc this incarnation either. I just dared criticized the flaws that this incarnation undermines the original appeal of the character being a hybrid rather then a now likely more leaning traditional grappler character.

Huh? If people were already eager to hate on SF5 no matter what, then why would they complain about a character they were actually looking forward to in said game they just wanted to hate on? Why would they even care?

Because we complain about everything here.

There are a ton of valid complaints: shit show of a launch, shitty netcode, lack of content, new OS every week... but to complain about a character before even getting to see how the character functions/feels... ?

@Number 13

You are making a non-informed opinion. You can speak like an expert all you want on previous iterations of Alex. On SFV Alex? We're all on the same footing here. The fact that you refer to these as "flaws" practically proves the point because ultimately the complaints always simply come down to "this is not the character I played" which to be frank is kind of a "no shit" type of thing. Ken isn't the same Ken in SFV but I'm not hissy-fitting because if I wanted to play SFIV Ken, I'd play SFIV. I'm not bitching about how different Rachel is in CF (pumpkin removal is big). I wouldn't be upset if ABA is changed in Xrd (I'd actually be happy I get to play a character I like!), and if SG2 is ever a thing, I won't be pissy pants at how Carol is changed either so long as she is included.

You use Ken.... of all characters for your argument? Ken didn't lose shit because he was a shoto to begin with lol. In fact he objectively got improved [in the sense of individuality] with SFV that made him his own character more. Did Ken lose fireball or Dp in this transition? Have a special locked behind a gimmick mode? I'm not saying change in general is a bad thing, but I'm [like others] are arguing the change for the sake of change or change for a misguided reason is unhealthy for developing an existing character. Great job moving the goal posts by getting away from Alex. Lol bringing up BB. Ton of Rachel players were bitching and they have the right to bitch if they so choose.

Again when is making a [god forbid] an understandable critique a bad thing? You want to give Capcom the benefit of the doubt for anything [beyond me why you would do that] fine by me, but don't bitch when other people dare not praise Capcom for their genius decisions.

Yeah I use Ken because he lost an entire play style. You might argue that you prefer the new Ken more (or that he is "improved"), but that doesn't objectively make it fact. There are plenty of players that prefer earlier versions of Ken more... And arguably yes Ken's step kick (not a special but arguably more core to SFIV Ken's kit than fireball or tatsu) is hidden behind a gimmick (and made punishable to boot).

I bring up BB to illustrate that all characters change, so it isn't irrelevant. It is at least more relevant than your bringing up your expertise since you played Alex in TvC, right?

But you're right Rachel players bitched (and Ken players, and Ryu players, etc.) It is your internet-given right to whine and moan and throw as much of a temper tantrum that you want. But let's not pretend that there is a point behind it though. You have as little of an idea as I do why they changed him and what their goal with him is... but hey, at least your character's in the game, right?

And for the record, I absolutely did not move the goal posts. BB was one of 5 examples and was just an illustration of a point... you get that right? Seriously, did you just look up a fallacy on wikipedia and force it to apply? I've made no real assertions at all, so I have no goal post. There is nothing to prove and so trying to make you prove more of something would be silly. In fact, to belabor the point, during the part you are emphasizing, I was the one offering "evidence" (if you really want to call it that) which means that I would be the one that a goal post fallacy would be applied to.

Interestingly, if you want to point out fallacies, you were the one that was making an argument from authority with your "I've played Alex before so you should listen to me"... but I think that calling out logical fallacies (especially by name) just undermines an argument via douchebaggary.

Editing to add:

And for fuck's sake, can someone please explain to me the appeal of earlier versions of Alex anyway? I really just don't get it. He looks like "generic giant blonde guy archetype #3".

I'm nostalgic for TvC Alex since I never got into SF until much later, so DDT being gone isn't huge to me, but Air Stampede and Slash Elbow being gone is fucking criminal. Like, was it that hard to give him two charge moves? I'm just hoping that moveset might still be in development.

And that he still has any form of his Backdrop. I swear if they took that out...

Also,

@Spencer

I assume since he's a very popular established character in one of the largest fighting game franchises of all time, removing about 40% of his moveset in the way if specials would make a lot of people upset, no?

Also I'm gonna agree with 13 on the fact that you compared to Ken to it being absolutely absurd as Ken lost close to nothing but gained a lot more.

I'm going to just say this politely regarding Ken. If you think Ken is anything like SFIV Ken, despite a similar moveset... you are playing a completely different game than just about everyone else.

If the only issue is Alex doesn't have x special then you're right, the Ken comparison isn't valid. But if the issue is instead that this Alex is too different or too unlike previous version of himself, then the comparison stands completely. And I think it is the latter. People are made that he's missing a special or two because they feel it undermines previous version of the character.

In any case all of this misses the point. The characters are different iteration to iteration. If you like 3rd Strike Alex... go play 3rd Strike. If you like SFIV Ken... go play SFIV. It would be foolish to expect them to make the transition unchanged... especially in a game that has already radically changed characters (Karin, Dhalsim, Birdie, Gief, etc.). But I understand that people are going to be upset. We like best what we already know. In any case, I'll bow out and let the "I hate SFV Alex" train continue its course.
