Anime/Manga General Discussion

I wanna watch the Gintama anime but I've never read the manga before.
Is my experience going to be negatively affected by this?

No. Just skip the first 2 or 3 episodes. They're a treat for the readers of the manga.

Inferno Cop Season 2 has been confirmed by Trigger

can they atone for the sins of the past? Found out next time.

I really doubt it, they didn't even have enough material to last the first thirteen episodes.

i mean, it is Trigger so disappointment is usually the name of the game

Yeah, Ruin, what are you talking about? Disappointment implies higher expectation going in.

The only time Trigger has been good though, is when little girls are the main characters.

And before anyone brings up Ryuko, there's nothing LITTLE about her.

she's like 5 foot nothing and full of seething rage and ineffectuality
ryuko is basically Pat in anime girl form

I'm not a little girl anime person but I'm not going to argue that, Luluco is the only thing of theirs off the top of my head I found to be at all enjoyable with any consistency.

I didn't even like Luluco

I mostly liked the FAI FO JUSTICE joke, Guts's appearance in the KlK episode, and the Sex & Violence with Machspeed episode

honestly just give me a Sex & Violence with Machspeed series, I won't need any medication for a while at least

I'm not calling Luluco a masterpiece, just calling it more consistent in quality and in general than Inferno Cop, whatever you think of that quality. I think it was okay, I enjoyed it to a degree, which surprised me.

Thinking about it it's something pretty far outside my normal tastes so maybe I just enjoyed it on that level. Who knows, I don't remember much of it.

I'm mainly referring to Luluco and Little Witch Academia.

I liked Luluco because it felt more like Trigger was having fun with it while trying to show they can do a good job. the love story was nice and it has a conclusion that I would argue is better than some of the bittersweet love stories they did back at Gainax.

and LWA has always been where I think Trigger's animation style shines. nice subdued colors mixing together with bright and colorful action scenes and effects. And I think the magical effects make much better use of their animation style than technological-esque effects like the life fibers from KLK.

I've been reading Berserk, for well over several months now, barely halfway thru

IT'S FUCKING GOOD

It's honestly really shocking though, the Golden Age movies were so well done I was surprised to hear how poorly received the anime was

it's weird because Berserk is so firmly cemented in the seinen zeitgeist but no one seems to give a shit enough to give it some budget
like the 1997 anime had little budget but it at least had the sense to focus most on the emotional events of the Golden Age arc

it's like how Jojo's is fuckin' jojo's but the animes of Parts 1 and 2 were fraught with budget and art issues

Yeah I would think that an honored elder like Berserk would get better treatment than this

LWA is also a bit more fun and dark once you realize its a big allegory for the animation and anime industry, from the character designs to the themes presented in the show.

I'm bored, where do you even start LWA? I remember looking it up once and it took more than 5 seconds to figure out so I didn't bother. I'm pretty sure I straight up hate Trigger, but for some reason I keep trying, maybe it's just to reinforce that hatred. Or find something to actually like about them, who knows.

i mean i've heard pretty nice things about Kiznaiver, aesthetically

Actually fuck it, if I'm asking for recommendations, this is my anime experience thus far. Please help me find new stuff, anyone, generally willing to try whatever.
+++ Paranoia Agent
+++ Spirited Away
++ Ayakashi (only last 3 episodes), Mononoke (in progress)
++ Ghost in the Shell
++ Ghost in the Shell 2
++ Mushishi (Only seen first season, anyone know how season 2 went?)
++ Wind Rises
++ Cowboy Bebop
++ Serial Experiments Lain (has issues)
++ Paprika
++ Perfect Blue
+ Kino's Journey
+ Ghost in the Shell S.A.C.
+ Ghost in the Shell 2nd Gig
+? Darker than Black (In progress, seems to rip off Roadside Picnic/Stalker pretty hard, which isn't a bad thing)
/ Howl's Moving Castle
/ Space Patrol Luluco
/- Inferno Cop
--- Kill La Kill

That's all I remember, I know watched most of Eva and all of FLCL but I have little memory of it (I have a bad memory in general, means nothing). List order means nothing other than the rankings themselves, which are honestly kind of rough in general.

And Manga
+++Berserk
++JoJo (Steel Ball Run is +++)
? Wolf and Cub (Literally just started)

i mean i've heard pretty nice things about Kiznaiver, aesthetically
I haven't even heard of it, but then again I don't follow anime closely, I just know people like LWA but don't like the actual series that much? I think.

uuuh okay I'm gonna suggest you that look into the works of Takeshi Koike and Masaaki Yuasa for one because they're both fuckin' awesome. Mamoru Hosoda is also a strong pick.
the works of Sayo Yamamoto are also both very recommendable, especially The Woman Named Fujiko Mine
One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100 are both good, I like Mob more personally due to the more funky animation.
if you're into historical character dramas i'd really recommend Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, it's good stuff but it's all talking so if you aren't into that, i'd skip it.

there's a lot of mecha out there but most mecha series are a pretty heavy investment, but I have a huuuge catalogue to recommend if you're willing, the big musts are some entries in the Gundam franchise, Big O, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann though. You already watched EVA too. Even if I personally don't like the show, I think it's a must watch for anyone into mecha

but I have a huuuge catalogue to recommend if you're willing,
Sure. Not guaranteeing I will actually get to anything any time soon, but starting a list now and willing to at the very least look into anything, and I obviously haven't seen much mecha.

some entries in the Gundam franchise
Being?

well okay it all really depends on how much you're willing to go through some oldies
speaking super really i think the original Mobile Suit Gundam is still actually a solid show that defined a genre. one of the biggest thing in gundam is that a lot of the characters aren't exactly likeable but they're understandable. They get a lot of human moments that show how and why they think and act why they do
but it's still from 1979 and it looks and sounds like it's from 1979. if you can stomach that then you'll get yourself a really good war story with giant robots also being present
moving forward from that, you have a lot of side stuff that may/may not need additional context to it
War in the Pocket is a fantastic small scale story about how innocents are affected by war and how both sides will have good people on them. It's also got a solid dub for when it came out, pre-MGS David Hayter's a main character even
08th MS Team is the trenches story about the regular joe soldiers who don't get the cool super robot (they get the shitty super robot)
Stardust Memory is the 80s-est bullshit to come out of 1991 and it has some fantastic animation and solid characters that get admittedly kinda lame at the end (due to a change of directors)

Zeta Gundam is the second full series its' like Gundam but more so and I don't mean that in a bad way, the characters are good and they were pretty big shakeups for 1985 and it really helped to cement gundam as a juggernaut in the zeitgeist + some classic memes (genuine actually memes and also funny haha memes) like you'll learn what a Char is.

skipping forward to the 90s you'll find a lot of weird stuff and I'm skipping over some other things that I'd recommend if you find yourself like goin' crazy for the series (F91 is a beautiful mess of a movie that I love every minute of but I can't really recommend it to a normal person)
G Gundam is stupid shounen garbage with a bunch of stereotypes and stock footage but it's just so goddamn fun that I can't not recommend it like oh my god it's the best bullshit ever. a horse gets a gundam

Gundam Wing is a very political story and I'd recommend it if you're down for that but i think it's aged a bit hard and it doesn't quite focus on the common folk as much as older gundams have so it doesn't do a lot for me but there's a lot of iconic moments early on so at least watch like the first couple episodes

Gundam X is an absolute diamond in the rough and I'm genuinely mad it's not more popular than it really is. It's essentially a sorta post apocalypse series where the earth faced a large scale catastrophe that leads to most of humanity being wiped and it focuses on people who are living in times only 15 years after the event. It's not mad max levels of metal but there's a unique atmosphere and camaraderie to it that's just unmistakable. The characters are very strong and it boasts the cutest most best main couple in the entire series like goddamn they're precious.

Turn A Gundam has one of the most unique settings in any mecha series (it's world war I and mechs are there) and it manages to be a very enjoyable methodically paced (a little sluggish at times) story that manages to turn the entire gundam franchise into a metaphor for dealing and overcoming depression + the main villain is basically the personification of every fan that ignores the nuance and messages of the series in favor of "Wow cool robot" and it's the best

everything after Turn A is a lot of "meeeeh" like Gundam SEED and its sequel are flatout terrible, 00 is fun if you feel like riffing on some dumb bullshit, AGE shits the bed in its third act so hard it killed the show for basically everyone, Build Fighters is Selling Toys: We Aren't Even Trying To Hide It Edition, Gundam Reconguista is a beautiful mess that everyone hates but meeee, and IBO is basically Shadow the Hedgehog for Gundam

moving on to not Gundam things

Ideon. Ideon Ideon Ideon. It's not a great show but watch it and then watch the movie and then watch the SECOND movie which is one of the best pieces of anime movie ever. it's the fucking shit that's all I can say. Please Watch Ideon.

Macross is a super janky inconsistent series about idols in space and also mecha/jets are there but what you really need to fuckin' watch is Macross Plus it's goddamn immaculate like holy shit. Directed by the same man as Cowboy Bebop (with another cool dude on animation direction) and the same composer as Bebop too. it's like Top Gun in Space only it's like 100x cooler

Macross 7 is about a hot-blooded rock band in space who fight aliens by playing rock music it's good and stupid and here's a gif of the main character eating a leaf
tumblr_nmhuj6MW2o1us7jl3o1_400.gif

i'd also recommend a look into the works of Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa, especially Getter Robo Armageddon

and a couple other titles to throw out there that I don't feel like detailing too much because I'm falling asleep: Patlabor, Gunbuster, King Gainer, Eureka Seven, Gao-Gai-Gar, bunch of other fuckin' stuff man i don't even know

Much appreciated.

Oh is that a dynamite 7 gif I see? My nigga.

Patlabor is godlike

I also unironically like G-Reco.

I usually say I like it the same way I like F91 to make things easier.

man I still gotta watch the Fujiko Mine one.
I also love G-Reco but yeah definitely not for newcomers of the franchise.
The first Macross is just as good as the original Gundam if not better imo, but yeah Macross Plus is bloody amazing.

Kiznaiver is a horrible show with horrible characters imo
Looks aesthetically nice but that's it.
Me and my brother were huge trigger fans but Kiznaiver was just unbearable.

Some manga recommendations if anyone cares:
> Ballroom e Youkoso - A ballroom manga with some amazing art. I don't care much for Ballroom but I found the characters likeable/relatable and it's fun just seeing the MC grow.

> My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness - An autobiographical manga about depression. Like, damn, it's really good just read it. The official english localisation has just been released, too.

> Soil - A mystery manga. Sort of a slow start, but it just keeps building and building and it's such a captivating read. It sets up a strange world and strange happenings, there is a lot of unexplained things but it never feels unsatisfying or frustrating because it lays down rules and stays consistent. This is even though the rules are never fully explained or understood by both the characters and the readers, which I think is a deliberate thing considering some themes that pop up through out.
I think another reader explained it better than I did:
"Like, normally you'd get basic world setup and everything evolves from there. For large plots, this brings about retcons and shoehorns. The plot of Soil goes in reverse - nothing is inconsistent, nothing is totally stupid, yet at the same time it's impossible to figure out anything from established principles. Every weirdness is busily tied into the preceding weirdness, but it all comes out of nowhere. (Which, I guess, is the whole point.) It's like the story is operating off a very skeletal premise and endgame, but otherwise it's all generating itself as it goes. Like Lost, but with an end in mind."
