Yeah, I had a great time. I really enjoyed it. Solid-as-always turn-based combat, badass soundtrack, great, simple story, and it's really nice to look at too. One of the better-looking PS2 RPGs. But some archaic and dumb design choices might stop it from being my favorite SMT game.
First off, fuck the Kalpas. I dreaded these things every time I had to do them. Only one save area at the entrance, stupid, repetitive free-fall minigame, Dante chase, Beelzebub. The entire thing was a nightmare. But I pressed on because I wanted Dante and to kick Luci's butt. The Labyrinth is definitely the low point of the game. But it's also entirely optional. In theory anyway, because no matter where you go online you're pegged as a pussy for not getting the TD ending. The only saving grace is that it has my favorite random battle theme. But all-in-all, a big fat wet fart.
Some other nitpicky stuff: Encounter rate is too high for me. Yeah there's skills that help that, but still. Some silly areas that are nigh impossible without an guide, like those underground station areas. Inherited skills are random, so you know the deal. Back out, select your demons and hope you get the skills you want for 20 fucking minutes. And of course, demon negotiating.
But other than that, smooth sailing. Press-turn system is great. I found myself exploiting weaknesses the least in this game though, not sure why. Not much to say about the battle system other than it's good as it's always been. Maybe that I still hate insta-kill skills, but muh.
I don't see people bring this up much, but Nocturne has some of the best environmental design of its generation. Locations like the Amala Temple and the Obelisk made me pan my camera around and mutter 'holy smokes.' Seriously. And the cel-shading is great. Nocturne gets delightfully cinematic at points, so all this really helps. It's a gorgeous game in many visual aspects.
The story was surprisingly simple and easy to follow, and I liked being apart of the world and impacting it. I also really liked knowing that everyone was going to die by my hand eventually thanks to ol' Luci. Seriously, fuck Chiaki and Isamu. I was salty as shit when they both betrayed me. Hijiri too. But, fuck, when Chiaki slaughtered the Manikins and killed one of my favorite characters, Futomimi, whatever bond we had at that point died. Everyone is an asshole with their own asshole god with flawed views and morals and I was delighted and determined to know that they all gon' die. Maybe that's what makes the Kalpas any sense of the word bearable, but goddamn.
The soundtrack is phenomenal but that goes without saying considering it's Shoji Meguro. I really enjoyed my time with Nocturne, I'm not sure how I'd rate it compared to the other Megaten games I've played, but I think other future playthroughs will cement a placement. I thiiink, right now, I enjoyed SMTIV more though. I'm not entirely sure. EITHER WAY. I'm leaning towards the Raidou games next, as well as Soul Hackers.
