Unpopular gaming opinions

How can a link be harder than a 1-frame link?

Also, are they really arbitrary or just unintentional outcomes of various design choices?

well in SF4 a lot of the links are 1 frame but in SFEX ALL of the links are 1 frame.
And it's definitely done on purpose. And a lot of SF4 players look down on anybody who thinks links are unnecessarily difficult, saying dumb quotable shit like "just practice it" and then immediately saying "tournament players drop their links all the time, too"

First off, I agree about links and CapnWTF is correct, many SF4 players will get flat out offended if you even suggest that the game might be better if the cancel system was altered such that links were removed and full or near full damage combos made more accessible to the masses. If they really don't think about what sort of links they're requiring of players when they tune each characters attacks recoveries and start ups, then they're guilty of terrible game design, and if they do, and they did things as they have on purpose, well its just my opinion, but I think thats bad game design as well. And I want to emphasize that its just an opinion, cause I know a huge chunk of capcom fans couldn't live in a world where links didn't seperate the scrubs from the elite, but its still an opinion I feel strongly about.

Anyway to add another onpopular opinion of my own:
- I prefer my fighting games to be slower.

It seems like since Street Fighter 2 Turbo was released, everyone I knew wanted their fighting games to be faster. Whatever speed it was at, they wanted it faster. I've never, not once, felt that way about a fighting game. I'm sure there is a rate at which a fighting game would be too slow, but while some people moaned and groaned about the speed of SF4, that was probably the thing I loved most about it (it certainly wasn't the links or FADCing...). Games like Guilty Gear, Arcana Heart, Blazblue, they all feel too fast paced for me, not to the point of being unplayable, but to the point of being considerably less comfortable to play.

Also, it may be entirely in my head, but when I played an early EARLY alpha build of skull girls at a convention (I believe there was just Filia and Cerebella playable) I remember feeling like the pacing felt just right, yet when I got a released copy skullgirls, it felt faster too. Not by a ton, but just enough to give me that same uncomfortable feeling I get from most 2d fighting games these days.

I don't know if its cause most peoples brains move faster then my own (the same reason my APM is so much slower in RTS games then the average gamers), but its definitely an opinion of mine that I wish fighting games on a whole were a little slower, and I know from lots of experience that its an unpopular one.

you like to take your time, and that's totally fine.
But I can't play Darkstalkers on ANY setting that isn't Turbo. It just feels wrong. so I can kinda relate? I think the problem is that when you offer something at a faster speed, people will normally get annoyed when said faster speed is no longer available. And if you've gotten used to a game at a faster pace, you can react to things in said game MUCH faster, and I could see how slowing that down would make things boring (Imagine UMVC3 at like...SF4 speed).

I don't like hitsparks. I know their purpose in a game, but I also like to look at the really cool art and animation work that was put into said game. To have obnoxiously large, loud bursts of color covering up everything is a little annoying. It isn't really EVERY game I feel like this about, but I feel like an option to not see them would be cool.

And while this opinion isn't so unpopular, little missing details PISS ME OFF in animations, REALLY badly. an example is Wesker's Samurai Edge disappearing into his chest when he puts it away, despite the fact that it would be REALLY EASY to just animate his hand going into his jacket through the opening.

Funny, because I actually find Blazblue to be too slow for my taste.

I respect your opinion, @DanTheMeek. I know a bunch of people IRL who like their fighting game to be slower. As for me though, I can't stand to play a slow fighting game. It just bores me. Moving a character like he was moving in mud is not fun. SF2 pre-Hyper Fighting, SF4, Brawl, SC4 are too slow for me. Note that it also applies for other genres though. Like I can't play Tenchu games anymore since I have Shinobido, same shit with RE4 vs. pre-RE4 games.

Now I recognize a game can be too fast, like MvC2 Turbo 2 (thank god it's not tourney standard) or VSav Turbo 3 (still trying to adjust to it.)

They certainly seem VERY intentional in SF4 and most likely put in as an arbitrary "difficult thing for the pros to do" with all of the input shortcuts and stupidly long reversal buffers and things they added to the game. There is absolutely nothing wrong with links and they obviously naturally occur, but I'm pretty sure most SF4 players would agree Capcom went a bit overboard with making sure they were so pivotal to actually playing the game.

I agree with it and I think its probably actually a quite popular opinion haha.

I am very happy that there may be no more marvel. After Marvel vs Capcom 3, I just don't even want to think how lower it could possibly go.

you think marvel 3 is as low as it could go? have you ever SEEN shaq-fu?

Megaman Battle Network 4 is the best Megaman Battle Network

Megaman Battle Network 4 is the best Megaman Battle Network
You are the only person in all my years to say that unironically.
Edit: Not saying that BN4 wasn't one of the best games mechanically; syncho modes, dark chips, a more refined navicust. It's just that BN4 had a terrible story and really underwhelming bosses.

Speaking of Battle Network...
Megaman Battle Network 5 for the DS was the right direction for the series to move. Introducing wireless netbattles made multiplayer less a hassle. And the liberation missions were really under-appreciated for how much variety they added to the story. If only Capcom hadn't decided to go the star force route and eventually launched Megaman to the moon. I would have liked to see a battle network game that used both the DS and Wii.

you guys are gonna hate me:

I think companies are in the right to not want the endings of their games shown on playthroughs ESPECIALLY lets plays

I just want Capcom to find some designers who are talented and start making good games again.

It WILL come back. Capcom lost the Marvel license after MvC2 was released on PS2 and they couldn't publish new copies of the game for a long time. I even heard how PS2 and Dreamcast copies became very expensive in auctions and online shops. Then they got the license renewed and released MvC2 on PSN and XBL.

Shaq Fu's not even that bad though. It's just stupid.

and Honestly I like Battle Network 6 the most (I'm not saying it's the best, but it's my favorite)
but while we're on the topic: I like Battle Network WAY more than Pokémon. WAY WAY MORE. 's more fun.

I love Skullgirls, but I think it's a terrible name. With a name like that many non-fans will assume that it refers to the playable cast (Not the final boss Marie and the women who got turned into Skullgirls before her) and then complain about the inclusion of Big Band and Beowulf and also make some lame "schoolgirl puns" (Add umlauts to the name like this "Sküllgirls" and it sounds like schoolgirls). I think they should have used something like "Legend of the Skullheart" or some other title.

I've tried almost every Final Fantasy game and the only one I actually enjoyed was Final Fantasy Tactics - and even then, Disgaea did/does everything better.

Earthbound (one of my favorite games) is overrated and Mother 3 outclasses it in every way.

I think the Bioshock games have gotten worse with each iteration, although I would still call all three good games.

Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game to date.

IT's not unpopular to say FFVI is the best final fantasy, but I think FFXII being the 2nd best is unpopular.

Katawa Shoujo wasn't that great, besides Lily, I felt all the story arcs ended abruptly and really didn't care for most of the other character's routes either.

Sunrider looks like it'll be the best OELVN ever.

Final Fantasy abandoned the ATB system too early, there's a lot of entertainment to be squeezed out of that system that they haven't used yet.

I think Laharl and Etna are annoying twats.

Arcana Heart is a great game series despite it's choice in aesthetic.

Slapping heavy metal on anything WILL make it more awesome, especially if it's DIO.

or maybe just skullheart? i think that would go well too

Mega Man X7 is more playable than X6?

X6 was a piece of shit

Every single action game should have unpredictable enemies/patterns thanks to rng. If a boss is impossible to beat on the first try but impossible to lose to after learning the patterns, that deeply offends me. Muscle memory is for chumps.

Not saying that you can't have challenges based on pure execution, 'cause that's fine. But if a game never forces you to react or improvise, something is wrong imo.

On that note, I'm starting to like Touhou better than Cave (delicious rng patterns ftw).

Thing is, most of Activision's Marvel games have also been delisted. I think Disney's putting the Marvel IP in a chokehold so that they can Orwell their way into being the only maker of Marvel games. But that could be paranoia talking.

As for actual gaming opinions...

-Capcom and its games would probably be better off if it died.
-Motor Mayhem (an old car combat game) was one of the best games of the PS2 generation.
-Really wondering why there aren't more tower defense games on consoles. Some of them are probably better fun than some console games (if I had to choose between Bloons TD5 and DmC, it'd be Bloons every time).
-Fighting games need to be accessible over being tournament worthy.
-I wouldn't mind seeing an all-Street Fighter airdasher spinoff.
-Phone games aren't going to be overtaking console games any time soon, if at all. (Is this actually unpopular?)
-I really wouldn't mind if the h-game industry spontaneously combusted.
-Edutainment games should stay on PCs. (Unpopular?)

-I really wouldn't mind if the h-game industry spontaneously combusted.
i misread this horribly until I realized what you meant with "combust"

Wait, what did you think it meant?

i mistook it as meaning a boom
as in, more h-games

-I really wouldn't mind if the h-game industry spontaneously combusted.

Not an unpopular opinion. That's a very popular opinion. On the other hand, I don't see a problem with h-games. Sex exist, I just except h-games for what they are, expected. Then again, most people would say I'm sexist cause I have no problems with sexualization in general, as long as its not done as a cover up for low quality and instead adds to the art at hand.

Sexuality is not sexist. You can have as many skimpy costumes as you want, but as long as you're not outright stating or implying that one sex is inferior to the other, it's not sexist.

"But wait Grooktook! Hyper-sexualization is a symptom of sexism!"

So? Coughing was a symptom of The Black Death. Does that mean everyone in the world is about to die because they coughed sometime within the past week?

As for the topic of fanservice in general, I don't really care. As with anything, I don't mind so long as it fits the context and atmosphere of the work. Pointless fanservice in a serious dramatic work? No thanks. Fanservice in an over the top tounge in cheek power metal fantasy? Seems legit.

if you're gonna hyper-sexualize something at least make it go both ways
or have some kind deeper meaning

but just having it there for the purpose of giving some sweaty asshole his fap material is gross

or have some kind deeper meaning

Actually, this is what annoys me more than anything else. Stuff that's obviously trying to just add an element of sex appeal but than turns around and tries to have a "deeper meaning". It just cheapens and makes whatever they're trying to say seem hypocritical IMO.

Anyway, I'm overall neutral about fanservice. I don't have a problem with it, and I don't have a problem with people enjoying it, but obviously it's not needed and doesn't fit in some contexts.

Fanservice doesn't have to have deeper meaning. As long as it fits, which it usually can. Honestly, it's hard to find a place where it can't fit if its good fanservice and is done right. Right can also be done multiple ways.

-I think gamers don't put their money where their mouth is generally.

i mean, at least have some kind of explanation as to why the fanservice is there, not just inexplicable bouncies
does the character like dressing like that? Do they do it on purpose? Are they a tease?
stuff like that

regular old fap material is just gross

Oh ok, yeah that's reasonable. Otherwise it's pretty much just porn.

Admittedly, if a character dresses sexy it's pretty much implied that they like doing it. Only other explanation is that they're being forced to...which is just gross and definitely one of the things I really do find disgusting. Anything non-consensual = disgusting and anyone fapping should feel bad.

Honestly, it's hard to find a place where it can't fit if its good fanservice and is done right.

Well, for example, there is no place fanservice would fit in Lord of The Rings. It's a quite, dignified, methodical work and any kind of fanservice would likely conflict with that atmosphere.

Not saying sexuality can't be dignified, but it's neither the time nor the place in this case.

Is Skullgirls' art considered fanservice?

I personally don't like it but I got over it because of how solid the game is.

Probably to social justice warriors only. But I must admit, the art probably sours some first impressions of the game.
