I was reading the thread about alternate endings and Balder & Osmiumsmith made a note of how it would be cool to see Christmas and Brain Drain's relationship not be a cheesy one. So that lead me to this.
I'm updating my old head canon of BD.
Initially I stated that I felt it would be interesting if BD had lots of potential before the process, but was ultimately a bit of a slacker and loser. He mostly used his tricks to get by and for personal gain, but never really made anything of himself till after the accident. Post-accident BD became who he wanted to be; powerful, sophisticated, dangerous. His artificial voice, physique and mannerisms were a far cry from his past self.
I like the idea that he met Christmas long before his transformation and was awed by her skill and her being a bit of a badass. He would constantly try to court her with his little tricks that he had learned, but nothing could impress a woman of her stature. This became his obsession and the drive behind his ambition. As he bettered himself, he began to appreciate literature and so much more, though he still had limitations that bothered him intensely. Opportunity struck when he applied for the psychic soldier program. Becoming a power psychic with untapped potential and a well-read warrior would get the lovely Christine's attention. It had to.
Fast forward past the accident. He re-encounters Christine and through the growth of his genuine journey they become close. While they enjoy each other's company, the mutual attraction and respect is borne from their attention to detail, tenacity, ruthlessness, passion to push past the limits of their respective agencies and selves. Through Christine's surgical skill and his own "physical evolution", BD gains an appreciation for experimentation.
Her death affected BD, it did not make him violently bitter and cold to the world, his current unsavory qualities were present. He was indeed deeply hurt and missed Christine, but rather, it made his existing drives stronger. To remember her tenacity and push through with strength, he would honour her, and ensure that such a creature that ended her life, would never rob the world of a fantastic talent and brilliant mind. "Victory at any cost, damn the consequences" -- she taught him that and it burned in his heart from their first meeting till their last.
Pushing to be the dark hero the world needed, to be an unparalleled force of advancement.
Brain Drain sees his actions as necessary in a world that periodically falls to mystical horrors and war, thus, in his mind, an iron fist is needed for order and for others to prosper...to reach their....his level. Love and the loss of it, did not make him evil. "Evil" is but a laughable concept to him. There are goals. With them proponents and opponents. The opponents must be swayed to his dream, or be crushed. He and Christine shared joy and knew of its power, but they were realistic and focused on their goals. Some may call them ruthless, but they shared a dream, and it was beautiful.
