Fire Emblem

Phoenix and Casual mode make sense to me from a gameplay perspective. Multiple difficulty selections are always better IMO, due to the nature of skill.

The petting thing, to many of us, just feels tone deaf and in poor taste. That an opinion and may not justify changing it in localization though, but like I said, I'm not shedding any tears for it.

Only thing worth mentioning: did Intelligent Systems get a say in that? I imagine NOA would have to at least run it by them before they locked off part of the games code.
And showing affection to my comrades by skinship also makes sense to me, tonally.

I honestly didn't even think of it as sexual until like recently when people starting jokingly calling it 'facepetting".

this is factually incorrect
Ok I stand corrected it's 1 specific scene where a character gets drugged or something. I've been out of the loop.

What is it even supposed to represent in-game? Calling someone to your room to poke their cheeks and breath deeply?

Anyway, I'm sick and goin' to sleep. See ya'll n the morning.

and what does casual mode represent?
the fact your enemies can't kill anyone in battle?

I always thought of it as just putting your arms around your comrades and playful punching. Unless it's your ingame married unit, that's a little more personal IS just didn't have the ability to make it that.

While I've heard the s rank shinships(reserved for married units) gets heavy.

both the music and the tone makes it seem as hijinks.

and what does casual mode represent?
the fact your enemies can't kill anyone in battle?
The fact that literally everyone important in
awakening lives

casual mode? more like causal mode
shoutouts to my boy the space-time continuum for enduring that shitty time travel plot point HEYOOOOOOOO

In my headcanon, the MC is the reincarnation of my Dark Souls character, and Pheonix mode represents the entire team being given the Undead Curse.

What's sillier than that is how
characters who were killed come back to life in canon as playable characters

Just wanted to chime in and say that while I find the rubbing mechanic creepy. I do not like the precedence Nintendo is setting with removing it from the NA release. It's the same baffling decisions that lead to NG+ costumes being censored in Fatal Frames and Xenoblade. Someone was going to be offended or turned off by the rubbing mechanic. From what I see it was optional content. It could have stayed in the game and people would have had to deal with it but it is still an intended part of the game.

Funny enough this is the future that Fire Emblem has chosen to embrace with it's Dating sim enthusiast pandering. And it's been more or less proven to work financially for the last game. Now that it's progressed down the logical route of implementations it's a problem because it went in a direction that's unsavory to most outside of the land of the rising sun.

But back on point. I don't mind patching a game to improve the experience or add new content. And gaming is a rare medium where revisions to the narrative or game flow have become accepted for the most part. I do however wish that games when localized would retain as much of their original content as possible as a matter of principle (There are exceptions but that is evaluated on a case by case basis). This isn't adding Dante to SMT Nocturne instead of Raidou because English speaking fans might not know who the latter is, this is just removing something because it's seen as undesirable and it might improve sales. A decision I won't begrudge the powers at be for holding but one that I think should have been brought up while the game was in development and not when it was seeking a release in another country.

I mainly just dont like the removal because I don't like censorship.

because if you're gonna localize a game in the first place, you say it's good enough for Western audiences in the first place.

Wow, I'm late to this.
This is going way too far. I find the petting creepy as well, but I think removing the feature completely was a really bad idea. It had a gameplay use, and while I didn't want it to exist in the first place, removing it entirely just rubs me the wrong way.
I feel like the best course of action they could have taken would be to censor some of the S-rank petting lines, instead.

Line reworks would have been fine. Like, that's what they did with Soilel so why couldn't they have just done that?

I guess I can kinda see that, but I still feel like a lot of ya'll are inserting a hefty amount of Slippery Slope fallacy. This is and incredibly minor thing relative to the game as a whole. Maybe I'm just okay with anything that pushes FE back from where it was going. Awakening was a bit too far in my opinion, and I'm just happy that there are steps being taken to pull it back. I don't know, I just don't want to see one of my favourite series lose itself to pandering a crowd and losing what makes it special.

I'm mostly looking at Nintendo's track record from recent years.

I guess, but I still feel like there are differences here. Xenoblade Chronicles X removed options for character creation, and Fatal Frame was already rated M. The changes in both of those games make way less sense than this one.

yes and no. I'm still under the impression that this rubbing mechanic was secondary to the main plot so if it was always optional people who don't like it can just choose to not use it regardless of it's mechanical benefits. (my option) It would seem to be something that people would find early on and decide if they wanted to put up with it or not.

I just feel like, even if it doesn't affect your personal playthrough, it still affects the image of the game and how people see the series. I know friends personally who were put off by the 'shipping focus' (Their words, not mine) that the game had. I convinced them to try it, and they ended up liking it, but not everyone has someone to convince them to try it.

The game already has very obvious waifu baiting. Busty jiggly women, twin pigtail loli's, and bishounen men in skintight armor. I think the shipping crowd already won and like I said, rubbing was just a logical outcome to appealing to the newest demographic.

Does anyone know when the Special Edition of Fates can be pre-ordered, or if it's already up for pre-order? I don't usually like pre-ordering games, but I just want to make sure I don't forget about the Special Edition. I can't seem to find a place to do it.
Anyways, it isn't the end of the world to me that they removed it, but it is going to bother me a lot if they don't replace it with something. If they replace the petting with a new feature where they use the 3D models, but you just talk to them, for example, that would be great, and better than having the petting in the first place. I don't know, I just don't want them to cut it out completely with nothing to replace the gameplay uses it had.

The special editions been sold out for awhile. You can still find it on EBay but it's around $200. Not worth it.

Yeah, scalpers got a hold of the Special Edition.
I was hoping they'd restock, like they did with the Twilight Princess HD w/ the Wolf Link Amiibo (Grabbed a preorder of that while I could)

Really? Goddamnit.
I was told on reddit it would only be available at the end of January... Damn, pre-orders start early.

also a really good article that brings up a lot of the qualms with the removal.

It bothers me that people are talking about the removal like it is a definite thing. Right now, it looks a little dubious as to whether it was actually removed or not.
We've seen in videos of the NA version that the room that's main purpose (not only purpose; it's also where you can edit your character) is the petting is still there, and every article I seem to read just sources Kotaku, not Nintendo. The original Kotaku article is a bit dubious too; here's the statement Nintendo made themselves:
“Yes, that is the case [that petting isn’t in the English version]. You might have heard somewhat misinterpreted or exaggerated information about the Japanese original game, but even in the Japanese original version, we have not included any features which are considered inappropriate in Japan.”
This, to me, seems like an answer they would give if the interviewer actually asked "will petting still be in the game". They're saying it [petting] never was there to begin with, and that they're just changing some aspects of the minigame. Now that I've actually read around about the supposed change, I'm a bit skeptical if it was actually removed, or not. I just want a more reliable source to confirm it. Honestly, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't there for the NA release.

I can say, Bill Trinen hasn't mentioned anything about this on his twitter.

so, at the very least, we don't have a definitive yes or no on if it's in there, but the fact that there is someone trying to spread that idea, it should allow it open for discussion.

what if they just censored the dialogue to make it confused, disgusted, and mocking towards corrin and the player
even when you S-Rank someone it's just like "I have always fucking hated this about you can we just go to bed"

I'm fine with that, because it's a rework. like Soilel.

that what ACTUAL localization is.

Of course, I definitely agree, I'm just saying it isn't a good idea to refer to it as such a definitive thing. This was always a possibility some people expected, and there's nothing wrong with discussing it now that it is much more likely. That doesn't mean people should claim it was confirmed, and it's something definitely happening. It should just be taken with a grain of salt.

I dont see how posting a scarecrow contradicts mine either.

especially when my argument is not a strawman
IF THE STRAWMAN IS LITERAL PEOPLE I AM REFERRING TO
because THAT would be the opposite of a straw-man.
