I wouldn't call this DLC yet, they haven't decided the scope of the game and the funding level will make that determination. 7 characters is only one less than Skullgirls' opening roster, and one of those was a semi-clone move stealer. It is extremely comparable so this community being so harsh on them is a very perplexing thing.
Chances are this stretch goal character isn't going to be funded. People are already questioning if the campaign is even going to be funded in the first place, let alone the stretch goal.
Even if the stretch goal is reached, one more character makes a big difference especially in games with already small rosters.
Not to mention Skullgirls has the option to play in teams which really, really increases the variety in who you play against. This game at the moment is strictly 1v1.
Personally, I think the character designs and artwork are far and away better than MLP ever has been. You can tell the personalities of the characters immediately (except for Oleander) by their design, expressions and the attitude found in Lauren's drawings.
Maybe it's too cutesy for some, but I would say it is a big step up.
While I dislike the cuteness and it is a big part of what I dislike about her style, my problems with how she draws lie elsewhere.
Giving a character a design that matches their personality/conveys who they are is different then making a design that actually looks good. The best designs for me are right in between to two.
Lauren Faust's designs just do not look nice to me.
The best is Velvet IMO. She looks interesting while conveying who she is. There's still stuff I don't like (her eyes, which is something I also dislike about her style, look more like the eyes of an insect than a deer).
Pom. Oh wow do I hate this thing's design. Not only do I not think it conveys what her personality is (she's got droopy eyes, but that is it), it just doesn't make any sense. She's supposed to be shy and girly, yet she has this weird ball of fur on top of her head which I assume is meant to resemble hair. It looks like a pompadour which doesn't fit her personality or actually look nice visually. The little puffs of fur on the back of her head even further confuses the design. It makes the fur around her head resemble hair even more which just makes the implications of a pompadour even heavier.
I could go further into things I don't like, but that is the gist of it. The cuteness isn't the problem.
