Them's Fightin' Herds

They don't want to add the console stretch goal officially until they have a firm number for the cost and how many consoles they will ship on I would assume.

Maybe it is stereotypical and I am inviting a lecture, but it makes sense that a strong and muscular looking character Lauren designs is made male and a cute one be female. Goats aren't very physically imposing animals but can skewer you and do a lot of damage with their horns.

And while breaking stereotypes is awesome and we should have nonstereotypical female roles and the like, that is something that not even Skullgirls with its amazing cast ever felt like doing with its art style. Lauren doesn't seem to want to draw burly ladies either so she shouldn't have to conform to other people's standards.

I'm hoping the starting roster will get to at least 8 characters. Preferrably 10. That said a roster of 6 is fine and I'll support them as best as I can, though at the moment that only consist of tweeting, forums, and word of mouth....

I think they plan make more characters are DLC in the future, but first we need get the game :D

Sadly, this campaing and Indivisible one will share de same time frame... will be bad for both...

Make Big Band, aka an Elephant
Elephants aren't ungulates. They have regular toes, they're just hidden on a huge pad of soft tissue.

Blue whales are ungulates though! Science.

y'Know... A goat in the game would be weird.

A certain breed of these things are easy to knock out

NOTE: The video shouldn't be funny but i won't blame you for laughing

I doubt this is going to make it past initial funding. 6 characters isn't a whole lot but it's enough to have some character variety. I'm guessing that if they end up with only 6 characters, they might use them to secure a publisher, or even come back and do another campaign. Skullgirls was so successful in part because the base game was already completed.

Honestly it's not that bad. They're two different genres, made by two different teams, tergeting different audiences. The only thing they share is the Z-Engine, but even then they're technically using different versions of it. Sure there may be some overlap when it comes to the targeted audiences, but I dont believe its enough to actually hurt either campaign.

EDIT:

Marvel 2 only had 6 characters

Eh Linux/Mac port stretch goal still seems doable as long as the next 25 days daily average doesn't go south fast consistently. Today and yesterday is going poor though since it's already going sub 10k when before it would at least get over 20k. If that continues then they might have their hands full just getting the initial goal even with last push.

You can't really equate the two. Modern fighters are held to a higher standard. I'm not saying it's fair but it is what it is. People were woulnd't play SG because it only had 8 characters.

I think the lack of any men actually bothered people more than 6 characters.

I really wish people would worry less about roster size though. Big rosters end up with shit like MKX with a ton of varations that aren't viable or SFIV with palbable tiers that actually matter.

Start small, balance from there, and grow imo.

It wasnt meant to be taken that seriously, hence the ":PUJNA:"

That said, like any exaggeration there's a hint of truth. If the game is fun and broad enough to consistently entertain with those six characters, then they're good imo. It's not the size that matters, it's the motion of your sheep dogs. But bigger is usually better, though.

If any character should be male, it's the noble giraffe.

Honestly I don't think this will be funded either. The roster is disappointing to me as well, and I dislike big rosters.
The best amount of characters for me is usually in between 10-15. Not too big where learning all of the matchups makes you cry or there are really only a few viable characters, but big enough for decent variation. On the topic of male characters, I think it would have been nice. Having everyone be female is uninteresting. I'd really have liked a male gentlemanly giraffe like mentioned, or something.

A lot of people are going to disagree with me but I don't like the art that much. I don't and have never liked Lauren Faust's style and I find it even more unfitting in a fighting game. I always pick my mains through design because even though gameplay is important to me I can't play as a character I dislike the design of and honestly I don't like any of them, but I settled on Velvet because she's a zoner.

I get the feeling that when/if this gets funded virtually everyone wants to play Velvet :P

I 100% agree that it's kind of a shame all the characters - and this first DLC character - are all female. Even a single male would have been a little more interesting.

I wouldn't call this DLC yet, they haven't decided the scope of the game and the funding level will make that determination. 7 characters is only one less than Skullgirls' opening roster, and one of those was a semi-clone move stealer. It is extremely comparable so this community being so harsh on them is a very perplexing thing.

Personally, I think the character designs and artwork are far and away better than MLP ever has been. You can tell the personalities of the characters immediately (except for Oleander) by their design, expressions and the attitude found in Lauren's drawings.

Maybe it's too cutesy for some, but I would say it is a big step up.

Chances are this stretch goal character isn't going to be funded. People are already questioning if the campaign is even going to be funded in the first place, let alone the stretch goal.
Even if the stretch goal is reached, one more character makes a big difference especially in games with already small rosters.
Not to mention Skullgirls has the option to play in teams which really, really increases the variety in who you play against. This game at the moment is strictly 1v1.

While I dislike the cuteness and it is a big part of what I dislike about her style, my problems with how she draws lie elsewhere.
Giving a character a design that matches their personality/conveys who they are is different then making a design that actually looks good. The best designs for me are right in between to two.
Lauren Faust's designs just do not look nice to me.
The best is Velvet IMO. She looks interesting while conveying who she is. There's still stuff I don't like (her eyes, which is something I also dislike about her style, look more like the eyes of an insect than a deer).
Pom. Oh wow do I hate this thing's design. Not only do I not think it conveys what her personality is (she's got droopy eyes, but that is it), it just doesn't make any sense. She's supposed to be shy and girly, yet she has this weird ball of fur on top of her head which I assume is meant to resemble hair. It looks like a pompadour which doesn't fit her personality or actually look nice visually. The little puffs of fur on the back of her head even further confuses the design. It makes the fur around her head resemble hair even more which just makes the implications of a pompadour even heavier.
I could go further into things I don't like, but that is the gist of it. The cuteness isn't the problem.

Maybe it was because all the characters just felt ridiculously good. Maybe it was because it was the game I dabbled in between playing SG and SFIV at the time. I don't know. But I was totally fine with Tribute Edition only having 6 characters. It got you into the game quick because you only had to learn 6 matchups per character. And it felt to me that the 6 characters in that game were enough to cover the major strategic archetypes usually found in a fighter (although Applejack was more a fundamentals/footsies character than a strict grappler but still). In my mind I still use Tribute Edition as an example where, if you can achieve "strategic balance" (Zoner is just as viable as rushdown is just as viable as puppet, etc) with just enough characters to do it, there's no need for more characters for the sake of more characters.

There was a lot of depth that was left undiscovered in Tribute Edition because infinites and unblockables kind of killed it. I don't think TFH is gonna have that problem now that they have the Z-engine.

I'm totally fine with TFH having 6 characters if that's all they need.

The game having a small roster while being 1v1, is actually a good thing IMO.

If you have teams with a small roster like that, one player is already using almost half the entire roster of the game, and i don't like that. With 1v1, while you have less virtual matchups, you have more variety between players. People don't complain all the time that every marvel 2 team has at least magneto, sentinel or storm in them? Well, this together with the fact that i preffer 1v1 games in general (and SG is still my favorite fighter, but i would like it more being pure 1v1)

The designs, i could care less about MLP, never saw it, never got interested, but this game looks fun and the characters look funny and cute. I could see myself playing this game, and not only that, but sending to my little sisters, it would be a great entry door for Fighting games (or gaming in general, since they live in a rural area), for them. =P

I wouldn't assume the game won't get funded just yet. I think the data for the Skullgirls crowdfunding is gone by now, but I'd check daily donation for Shantae's Indiegogo here, which is pretty much the same for all successful campaigns.

Big opening peak, a rather calm stable progress thorough the month with smaller occasional peaks whenever people get their paychecks and/or something cool is announced, and a second big peak at the end mirroring the day 1 one, where people who were holding back with donating/upping their backer tier make their final decisions. I'd say that things will be trending towards a optimistic end as long as TFH's crowdfunding gets about 50% of its goal halfway through the campaign.

Also, I never understood why roster size is an issue. Skullgirls got and gets this often too, even when each character is very unique and meticulously balanced against every other one. I for one prefer a smaller varied'n'balanced roster than a bigger one where every 3 chars mechanically feel like clones of each other with a slightly different special, and where there are distinct tiers making only 4-5 characters competitively viable anyway.

I gotta say it's a little hypocritical to complain about a small female only roster on the forum for skullgirls. It wasn't a valid complaint when people were making it 3 years ago and it's still not a valid complaint now. The smallest cast in recent memory has to be rising thunder, and while there are problems with that game, character variety isn't one of them.

Don't really care if the roster is mostly/all female or male. I played plenty of fighters that were both. Adding male/female characters for the sake of gender equality rather then creator vision is what annoys me more actually. About roster size, they can increase that over time [assuming they at least past initial goal] through other means just like what Skullgirls did which was initially at eight.

Arguable Skullgirls had it worse since it was a pseudo Marvel fighter with a small roster which increases the chances of mirror occurrences with at least one of the characters. It's still arguable now if even fourteen is enough for the type of game Skullgirls is.

Any complaint that a lot of people make is a valid one, whether you agree with the logic behind it or not. And these complaints were obviously expected, they know some people won't like the fact that all characters are female and that the roster is gonna be small just like they know some people won't like the art style and some people won't like that it's a fighting game but what can you do? It's just a game that I'll most likely enjoy playing so I donated...

^ This!!!

Is natural complain. Is natural suggest. We only need respect the opinions and make our ones. :D

I like giant roster, with different characters. The SSIV roster are great, but I dislike the large group of shotokan characters... I think a small roster = less fun time, but this not make me not want or buy a game. And, actually, is aways the possibilities of more DLC characters.

Some opinions are kinda bad though. Like when confronted with why it's ok with Skullgirls being almost all female but not this game, people will argue that the female cast is important for the former's plot so it is a totally different situation. Completely ignoring that, the plot was made that why so Alex could exclusively draw sexy monster girls and have a flimsy in-game justification for it.

If this game bullshitted the same thing and said a Key Keeper can only be female, people would then argue they were ripping off Skullgirls, so they can't win on that point either way.

Oleander 4 life! Pom a close second.

With 6 chars, I simply plan to have a pocket everyone. Main(s) will be decided after a bunch of matches.

Well some people like characters based on how much of that character they find relatable. Is it wrong to identify with male characters over female ones? I know they're still catering to the MLP community and what not, but two male characters out of the bunch wouldn't have sent them into a frenzy. Or at the very least had the Goat character be male. I've seen enough stallion oc's to know people don't mind male characters in their mlp. As it stands, they just really wanted to reskin FIM, keeping the same personalities and genders. I feel they could have differentiated more, but chose to play it safe.

I'm fine with a disparity between genders but the absence of either, I'm not particularly a fan of. Sure it's a trivial to some but not everybody see's it that way.
